Notes: A generalization of the steady-state and equilibrium approximations for solving the coupled differential equations of a chemical reaction is presented. This method determines the (steady-state) reaction velocity in closed form. Decay from rapidly equilibrating networks is considered, since many enzyme mechanisms belong to this category. In such systems, after transients have died away, the phase-space flow lies close to a unique trajectory, the slow manifold M. Locating M reduces the description of the system's progress to a one-dimensional integration. This manifold is a solution of a functional equation, derived from the differential equations for the reaction. As an example, M for Michaelis–Menten–Henri mechanism is found by direct iteration. The solution is very accurate and the appropriate boundary conditions are obeyed automatically. In an arbitrary mechanism, at vanishing decay rate, the slow manifold becomes a line of equilibrium states, which solves the functional equation exactly; it is thus a good initial approximation at finite decay rate. These ideas are applied to a mechanism with both enzyme–substrate and enzyme–product complexes.

Notes: Dispersed fluorescence spectra for S0 to S1 vibronic transitions in anthracene are computed using the semiempirical QCFF/PI approach plus corrections resulting from fits to experimental spectral intensities. Extensive comparisons are made with the experimental jet spectra. The nature and assignment of low lying levels are clarified within the normal mode picture, whereas higher energy spectra are shown to be considerably broadened by low order anharmonic corrections. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The construction of a short external cavity (SXC) module based on the flexure mount concept for semiconductor lasers is presented. The SXC system is an inexpensive and simple means to achieve single-mode operation from normally multimode lasers. The SXC assembly is a flexure mount designed to hold an external cavity mirror and a laser in alignment. The flexure mount permits easy and precise angular positioning of the external mirror. With InGaAsP lasers, side mode suppression ratio as high as 300 can easily be obtained. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: [Auszug] To be considered a full-fledged commercial venture, biotechnology must create products or offer services. So far, a major bottleneck along the road to commercialization has been the slow development of techniques for purifying fragile bioproducts. Not only are these valuable compounds vulnerable to ...
