Notes: Abstract Growth increments of the male rock lobster Jasus lalandii vary systematically with location within a small (38 km2) fishing ground off the South African west coast. High growth rates were recorded from an area where the availability of benthos suitable as rock-lobster food was also high. Increments could also be shown to vary significantly in different years, but over the size range examined, growth did not appear to be a function of size. Benthic biomass was found to be inversely related to depth. However, comparisons between biomass values from the same depths in two different areas of the fishing ground suggested that biomass was higher in areas which were in proximity to shallow water, where extensive kelp beds were found. Mussels (Aulacomya magellanica) formed an important constituent of the rock lobster's diet; these were prevalent at depths between 20 and 40 m, and especially in areas where rock-lobster growth rates were high.

Notes: Summary In hypoparathyroidism the absence of parathyroid hormone leads to a reduction in the absorption of calcium by renal tubular cells. In spite of treatment with vitamin D, hypercalciuria persists and normocalcaemia can only be maintained by providing the kidney with a large load of calcium. Thiazide diuretics enhance tubular calcium reabsorption and it has been suggested that they can be used as an alternative to vitamin D. Bendrofluazide in a dose of 10 mg daily was given to 9 patients with severe hypoparathyroidism in addition to their usual treatment with calcium and vitamin D. Following the introduction of Bendrofluazide the calculated renal threshold for calcium reabsorption (TmCa/GFR) increased by a mean value of 0.14 mmol/l, and the mean rise in serum calcium was 0.13 mmol/l. This increase was due to a direct effect of the drug and was not caused by salt restriction or changes in glomerular filtration rate. The rise in serum calcium is modest compared to the rise following the introduction of vitamin D and except for patients with mild hypoparathyroidism, thiazides are not an alternative to vitamin D. They may however reduce the oral calcium load required to maintain normocalcaemia.

Notes: Four studies were carried out at separate locations to investigate the relationship between health effects and low-contact water sports, and intensive microbiological sampling was conducted in parallel to the health studies at each site. The two sports examined were marathon canoeing and rowing. The extremes of water quality were at the estuarine sites on the River Torridge, where pollution levels varied from a geometric mean faecal coliform value of 62/100 ml at the Appledore/Instow site to 4613/100 ml at the Bideford site.A comparison of ‘exposed’ and ‘unexposed’ groups, 5–7 days after exposure, showed that the health effects of low-contact water sports are minimal, within the water quality ranges which were studied.

Notes: Summary Karyotype analyses of prometaphases from medullary plate cells derived from mid-neurulae of Rana pipiens have led to the identification of the nucleolar chromosome and nucleolar organizing region, which is located on the longer arm of a small sub-metacentric chromosome (No. 10).

Notes: Abstract This study used biochemical and immunohistochemical methods to characterize the chondroitin sulphate-rich proteoglycans from human alveolar bone obtained from an oral source. Proteoglycans were extracted from bone by a sequential 4 m guanidine HCl extraction process, and purified by DEAE-ion exchange chromatography. SDS-PAGE and Western blot analysis, using CS-56 monoclonal antibody, demonstrated one major proteoglycan species with a core protein of 58 kDa, glycosaminoglycan chains of 45--66 kDa and a mean molecular weight of 205 kDa. This work confirmed the biochemistry of chondroitin sulphate-rich proteoglycans from a novel source of adult human alveolar bone, and pointed towards a proteoglycan with a high glutamate, glycine, aspartate, alanine, serine and leucine content. Sections of alveolar bone were embedded in LR White resin, labelled with CS-56 antibody and examined with the light and electron microscopes. At the light microscope level, labelling was restricted to the osteocyte lacunae and canaliculi. Ultrastructural observations showed that the labelling was localized to fine filamentous material in the walls of the osteocytes and canaliculi. Sparse labelling was associated with the collagen fibres immediately subjacent to the lamina limitans, but no labelling of the mineralized matrix was observed. These findings also indicated subtle differences in the distribution of chondroitin sulphate compared with previously reported work, which may indicate species or age differences in the samples used in this study. Ultrastructural analysis confirmed and extended observations of glycosaminoglycan localization at the osteocyte cell membrane of mature human alveolar bone
