Notes: For the investigation of high-Z impurities in the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak a sublimation probe was developed and tested. With this probe it is possible to inject materials, that sublimate at temperatures from about 50 to 150 °C into the plasma through a controllable valve. For the investigation of the tungsten transport in ASDEX Upgrade the probe was operated with tungsten carbonyl. The flux of tungsten, which is difficult to determine directly because of the uncertain atomic data, can be determined using the fluxes of oxygen and carbon, the atomic data of which are better known. In this article the setup of the probe and first experiments are described. Here the layer of deposited tungsten was investigated and the number of emitted photons per ionization (the S/XB ratio) for the 400.8 nm line of W I was estimated. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: For absolute soft-x-ray line intensity measurements to deduce elemental concentrations and parameters of magnetically confined plasmas large-area x-ray sources are developed and investigated. These calibration sources use K, L, and M transitions in different elements and cover a wide photon energy (and wavelength) range. From the measured absolute line intensities of these sources the quantum efficiency values of numerous elements for K-, L-, and M-line emission per incident electron are deduced. They represent the basis of simple soft-x-ray monitors for impurities in fusion plasmas. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A Bragg spectrometer for monitoring impurity radiation of hydrogenlike carbon and oxygen at the tokamak ASDEX Upgrade is presented. The use of fast multistrip proportional counters allows soft x-ray photon counting with count rates above 1 MHz in a simple arrangement. The absolute calibration was performed using a large area x-ray tube with a LiF anode. The concentrations of both impurities are calculated using the coronal model both for ionization and electron impact excitation. The results of the measurements concerning the long term behavior before and after conditioning of the torus walls by boronization as well as the fast plasma processes are presented. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A two channel multicrystal spectrometer of Bragg geometry was constructed for measurements of absolute photon fluxes of ASDEX Upgrade plasmas in the wavelength range from 0.5 up to 26 Å. The calibration of the spectrometer was done by an ab initio calculation using the absolute reflection data from literature of four crystals. The calibration was validated by the direct comparison with other absolute calibrated diagnostics at the ASDEX Upgrade as well as by using the impurity transport code STRAHL. The absolute impurity concentrations of elements from N up to Cu have been extracted. O and F appear to be main impurity components after C, which is routinely measured by an independent diagnostic. Despite the significantly lower concentration of Ar, it contributes measurably to Zeff and can account for main plasma impurities as well. Other impurities either have never been seen or appear only sporadically (like Fe and Cu) and normally do not contribute significantly to the plasma radiation in the soft x-ray range. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Fretting fatigue crack nucleation in Ti−6Al−4V when fretted against itself is investigated to determine the influence of contact pressure, stress amplitude, stress ratio, and contact geometry on the degradation process. For the test parameters considered in this investigation, a partial slip condition generally prevails. The resulting fatigue modifying factors are 0.53 or less. Cycles to crack nucleation, frictional force evolution, crack orientations and their relationship to the microstructure are reported. The crack nucleation process volume is of the same order as the microstructural length scales with several non-dominant cracks penetrating 50 μm or less. The effective coefficient of friction increases during early part of fretting. Observations suggest that cyclic plastic deformation is extensive in the surface layers and that cyclic ratchetting of plastic strain may play a key role in nucleation of the fretting cracks. A Kitagawa–Takahashi diagram is used to relate the depth of fretting damage to the modifying factor on fatigue life.

Notes: The framework for developing a mechanistic-based life prediction model for metal matrix composites is described. For a composite consisting of unidirectional silicon carbide fibers in a titanium aluminide matrix, SCS-6/Ti-24A1-1INb (at%) [0]8, three dominant damage mechanisms were identified: (1) matrix fatigue damage, (2) surface-initiated environmental damage, and (3) fiber-dominated damage. Damage expressions were developed for each mechanism along with a method for determining the constants. The damage is summed to obtain the total life. The model is capable of making predictions for a wide range of histories, including isothermal fatigue at different frequencies and stress-ratios, thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) under in-phase and out-of-phase cycling conditions, thermal cycling at constant stress, and stress holds at either maximum or minimum stress. Considering the wide range of cyclic conditions, the predictions compare favorably with experiments. In addition, the controlling damage mechanism for each history is predicted.
