    Notes: The strain sensitive and temperature behavior of the oxygen ion implanted manganese films have been studied for their possible application as strain gauges. Films were subjected to different ion dosages and the resistance-strain behavior was studied. Also, the resistance variation of films with temperature was studied and TCR (temperature co-efficient of resistance) values were calculated. The structure and surface morphology of the films were examined using x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy methods, respectively. The TCR value as low as 3.94×10−5/°C has been observed at lower annealing temperatures. It was found that both Mn and MnO2 phases exist in the film after annealing. Observed data indicate that metallic conduction is the predominant mechanism in these films.

    Notes: Abstract β-FeSi2 is an important semiconducting silicide which is being studied extensively. In this paper, we report our results of the effect of laser and laser-thermal annealing on the properties of β-FeSi2. 5N purity Fe was deposited on Si substrate and was subsequently irradiated by CW and pulsed laser separately followed by thermal annealing to reduce the laser induced damage. The samples were then characterized by sheet resistance, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), optical reflectance and absorption studies. Lastly, β-FeSi2/n-Si heterojunctions were fabricated and the effect of laser treatment on the junction ideality factor was investigated. All these characterizations indicated the formation of good quality β-FeSi2, particularly after pulsed laser followed by thermal treatment.

    Notes: The kinetics of vinyl polymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) initiated by an acidic permanganate/thioacetamide (TAm) redox system have been investigated in aqueous media at 30 ± 0.2°C in nitrogen, and the rate of polymerization measured. The effect of additives like organic solvents, neutral electrolytes, and complexing agents on the rate have been assessed. Based on the experimental results, a suitable reaction scheme involving initiation by organic free radicals generated by the interaction of Mn(IV) with protonated thioacetamide and termination by Mn(III) has been suggested. Various rate and energy parameters have been evaluated.

    Notes: The kinetics of polymerization of acrylonitrile initiated by KHSO5 and catalyzed by Ag(I) have been investigated in an aqueous medium over the temperature range of 35-50°C. The rates of polymerization Rp have been calculated and studied with respect to monomer and initiator. The catalytic activity of various metal ions on the initiator has been determined from a comparison of Rp values. The effects of monomer, catalyst, neutral salts, various amines, and inhibitor (hydroquinone) on the initial rate as well as maximum conversion have been studied. From the kinetics results a suitable reaction scheme has been proposed.

The rate of polymerization (Rp) and the rate of Ce(IV) disappearance (-RCe) were measured. The effect of certain water-soluble organic solvents, added electrolytes, and aromatic and heterocyclic organic nitrogen compounds on the rate of polymerization has been investigated. Depending on the experimental results, we have suggested a suitable reaction scheme for the system which involves the production of initiating radicals from the oxidation of thioacetamide (TAm) by ceric ion and the termination of the polymer chain by metal ions.

    Notes: The aqueous polymerization of acrylonitrile initiated by the bromate - ferrous redox system in aqueous sulfuric acid was studied under nitrogen atmosphere. The rate of polymerization increased with increasing concentration of ferrous in the range of 0.25-1 × 10-2M. The percentage of conversion increased with increasing concentration of the catalyst, but beyond 2.5 × 10-3M there was a decreasing trend in the rate of polymerization. The rate varied linearly with [monomer]. The initial rate of polymerization as well as the maximum conversion increased within the range of 1-2.5 × 10-3M KBrO3, but beyond 2.5 × 10-3M the rate of polymerization decreased. The initial rate and limiting conversion increased with increasing polymerization temperature in the range 30-40°C; beyond 40°C they decreased. The effect of certain neutral salts, water-miscible solvents, complexing agents, and copper sulfate concentration on the rate of polymerization was investigated.

    Notes: The graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate onto silk fibers was investigated in aqueous solution using Mn3+ acetyl acetonate [Mn(acac)3] as initiator. The rate of grafting was determined by varying monomer, acidity of medium, temperature, and reaction medium. The graft yield increases significantly with increase of [Mn(acac)3] concentration up to 0.01M, and with further increase of [Mn(acac)3] the graft yield decreases. The effect of the increase of monomer concentration brings about a significant enhancement in the graft yield, and with further increase the graft yield decreases. The rate of reaction is temperature dependent; with increasing temperature, the graft yield increases. Among the solvent composition studied, a water/solvent mixture containing 10% of the solvent seems to constitute the most favorable medium for grafting, and, with further increase of solvent composition, the graft yield decreases. The effect of some inorganic salts, organic solvents, and complexing agents has been investigated.

A mechanism involving the formation of a complex between Mn3+ and thioglycollic acid whose decomposition yields the initiating free radical with the polymerization being terminated by the metal ion has been suggested.
