Summary of the Current Research and Implications for the Future.-.
Abstract: This book investigates the effect of the Green Revolution (GR) on long-term changes in the fertility status of paddy soils in tropical Asia. While information on long-term changes in soil fertility status are rather limited due to difficulties in obtaining past data or samples for comparison, this investigation on temporal changes in soil fertility is possible by comparing fertility status in the 2010s, which the authors examined recently, with those from the 1960s, when GR was initiated, which was reported by Kawaguchi & Kyuma (1977). More than 220 paddy soils collected from Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Bangladesh, and Indonesia were analyzed for their physicochemical properties as well as total and available fractions of plant macro- and micro- essential elements, and their temporal changes were examined in addition to their spatial variation in each country. The most significant change was a drastic increase of available phosphorus in soils, possibly due to fertilization after the GR. Changes in organic matter, pH, and other nutrients were relatively small. A considerable decrease in the content of some micronutrients was also observed. Long-term studies on soil fertility status in the past and present will be useful to establish soil/fertilizer management for sustainable rice production in the future. This book is an essential reading for soil scientists, agricultural scientists, environmental scientists, as well as policymakers and nongovernmental officers such as FAO.

Description: Spectrocolorimetric properties analysed with a portable diffuse reflectance spectrophotometer (Konica Minolta CM-700d) and geochemical contents obtained with an energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (ED-XRF Epsilon 4) were analysed in potential source material that may supply sediment to coastal rivers draining the main Fukushima radioactive pollution plume (Japan). Three potential source materials (n=57) were considered (cropland soils ready for cultivation after the completion of the local decontamination programme; forest soils and subsurface material originating from landslides and channel bank collapse). Recent sediment lag deposits (mud drapes deposited on channel-bed sand; n=24) were collected along the main rivers draining the Mano and Niida catchments (Fukushima Prefecture, Japan) on the 29th and 30th of October 2019 after the 2019 typhoon season including typhoon Hagibis. In addition to spectrolorimetric and geochemical properties, radiocesium (Cs-137) concentrations were analysed by gamma spectrometry using Germanium Hyperpure detectors in all source and sediment samples (n=81).

Description: This dataset compiles all the radioactive dose rates measurements and the anthropogenic fallout radionuclides analysed in recent sediment deposits collected in the coastal catchments draining the main radioactive plume of Fukushima, Japan (2011-2020). Gamma-emitting fallout radionuclides activities (Cs-137, Cs-137, Ag-110m) were determined by gamma spectrometry using HPGe detectors (Canberra/Ortec), and activities were decay-corrected to the sampling date. Uncertainties reached ca. 5-10% on Cs-134 and Cs-137 activities, and ca. 15-20% on Ag-110m activities at the 95% confidence level. Radiation dose rates were systematically measured in the field (at 1-cm height from the soil) using a radiameter (LB123 D-H10, Berthold Technologies) in recent sediment drape deposits and in nearby soils along rivers (i.e. in a 10 to 20 m wide area along rivers). This data was collected in the framework of the TOFU (Agence Nationale de la Recherche; grant no. ANR-11-JAPN-001) and the AMORAD (Programme des Investissements d'Avenir; grant no. ANR-11-RSNR-0002) projects. The support of Centre Nationalde la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS, France) and Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) is also gratefully acknowledged (grant no. PRC CNRS-JSPS 2019-2020, no. 10; CNRS International Research Project - IRP -MITATE).

Description: We used two-dimensional simulations to investigate the effects of a hydrous lithospheric mantle (HLM) on subduction dynamics. It was demonstrated that the thickness of a subducting HLM strongly controls the motion and deformation of converging plates. When the HLM thickness is lower than a critical value, for example, ∼5 km for a 100-Ma slab, all serpentine in the HLM decomposes, and the liberated fluid enters the mantle wedge. The fluid weakens the overlying plate, causing trench retreat, rapid plate convergence, and slab stagnation. In contrast, when the HLM thickness exceeds the critical value, dense hydrous magnesium silicates appear in cold parts of the HLM at high pressures. The buoyant dense hydrous magnesium silicates reduce the slab pull force, weakening trench retreat, rapid convergence, and slab stagnation. A low HLM thickness may account for tectonics in some actual subduction zones characterized by trench retreat, rapid convergence, and stagnant slabs, for example, in Northeast Japan. ©2018.
