Notes: Strain-dependent electrical conduction has been observed in the system NiO–CaO.xNiO·(1 - x)CaO solid solutions are fabricated by a traditional solid-reaction method. When the 0.03NiO·0.97CaO solid solution is annealed at 1000°C, excess NiO is excluded and precipitates on the surface or intergrain layers. When compressive stress is applied to the specimen, the electrical conductivity increases with an increase in the applied stress. The magnitude of the conductivity change exceeds 50% during 15 MPa loading at 800°C. The presence of a precipitated NiO layer over the xNiO (1 - x)CaO phase is suggested to be the origin of the applied stress-dependent electrical conductivity.

Notes: A couple of zinc oxide (ZnO) single crystals with single boundaries (ZnO-ZnO single-contacts) are fabricated by the traditional vapor reaction method and their electrical properties are characterized. The ZnO-ZnO single-contacts obtained show nonlinear current-voltage (I-V) characteristics without varistor-forming constituents. Some of the ZnO-ZnO single-contacts show pronounced nonlinear I-V characteristics with negative resistance. The I-V characteristics of the ZnO-ZnO single-contacts are apparently similar to those of ZnO varistors; however, there are marked differences in the electric structure of the boundaries between the ZnO-ZnO single-contacts and ZnO varistors. The capacitance-voltage (C-V) relations of the ZnO-ZnO single-contacts are quite different from that of ZnO varistors and no evidence for the formation of double Schottky barriers at the boundary region are found. A very slow response to current stress is a feature of ZnO-ZnO single-contacts and it is suggested that any thermal processes including Joule heat would modify the carrier transport efficiency through the boundaries.

Notes: Abstract Hardened gypsum is chosen as a simple model of hardened cement materials and an analogy between the mechanical and dielectric strength distributions is investigated. Both of the strengths are evaluated in terms of Weibull statistics and a two-parameter Weibull function is adopted for both of the strength distributions. Both plots show good coincidence which is independent of the water content used during the mixing of hemihydrate gypsum powder for hardening. The hardened gypsum sheets made with 70 wt% of water, have mechanical and dielectric strength distributions that show two different behaviours in the Weibull plots, however, both the plots agree with each other. From our results, it is concluded that the mechanical strength distribution of hardened gypsum can be evaluated in terms of the dielectric strength distribution, which can be easily measured from a breakdown test.

Notes: Abstract In order to reduce the internal stress of cured epoxy resin generated by shrinkage in the cooling process from cure temperature to room temperature, two kinds of acrylic polymers were introduced byin situ UV radiation polymerization prior to curing. Polybutyl acrylate (A) and butyl acrylate-monoethylene glycol dimethacrylate copolymer (molar ratio 95∶5) (B) were used as the acrylic polymer. In the A-modified resin, a heterogeneous structure with spherical submicrometre domains were formed. In the B-modified resin, irregularly shaped submicrometre domains in which the microphase separation occurred were observed. The modulus of cured epoxy resin decreased as a result of the modifications, and was lower in the B-modified resin than in the A-modified resin. Therefore the internal stress decreased more effectively in the B-modified resin.

Notes: Abstract The CuO/ZnO heterocontact is made by stacking CuO and ZnO porous ceramics and its catalytic activity for CO oxidation reaction is evaluated as a function of applied bias. Its catalytic activity is strongly depend on the dc applied bias and when the reverse bias (CuO-, ZnO+) is applied to the heterocontact, the amount of the produced \hboxCO2 from the catalytic interface rapidly increases, while it decreases when forward bias is applied. The magnitude of the enhancement of the catalytic activity by reverse applied bias is extremely large (30% for −2.0 V at 320°C), comparing with the results in the gradient composition CuO/ZnO heterocontact. The p-i-n structure is suggested as to the electronic structure of the CuO-ZnO contact interfaces and supposing p-i-n structure, the surface Fermi level position of CuO and ZnO are guessed to move as a function of applied bias. The catalytic reaction over CuO make a large contribute to the whole catalytic reaction at the CuO/ZnO heterocontact and it would be modified by the applied voltage dependent surface Fermi level position of CuO. The working mechanisms of such phenomena are qualitatively discussed by the electronic theory of catalyst proposed by Wolkenstein.

Notes: The effect of epoxy groups at the surface layer of ethyl acrylate-glycidyl methacrylate copolymer (1) emulsion particles on its crosslinking reactivity has been investigated. For this purpose two series of I emulsions were prepared. In the Y series, of which emulsion particles have epoxy groups at the surface layer, the epoxy content in the polymerization recipe was varied. For preparing the X series, of which emulsion particles have few epoxy groups at the surface layer, the high epoxy content of a given emulsion was reduced by various degrees of cleavage reaction with HCl-CaCl2. In emulsion blend films with amine-group-containing copolymer (II) emulsion, where the crosslinking reaction was expected to proceed only at the interfacial layer of I and II emulsion particles, the Y series, compared to the X series at the equal overall epoxy content in particles, showed less swelling and higher gel fraction in dioxane, less swelling in water, and higher tensile strength and modulus. On the other hand, this difference was not observed in the next two crosslinked films in which crosslinking was expected to be homogeneous. First, blends of I and II, which were isolated from the corresponding emulsions discussed above, were cast from dioxane solutions. Second, I emulsions were cast with BF3 ether complex which was expected to penetrate into the particles. It is concluded that the response of I emulsion cleaving the epoxy groups at the surface layer of particles to subsequent interfacial crosslinking is obviously reduced. However, even such an emulsion can be crosslinked to an extent similar to that of an uncleaved emulsion with similar overall epoxy content, if the crosslinking reaction is conducted so as to give an homogeneous effect.

Notes: Effect of particle size on the mechanical properties of cured epoxy resins has been studied. Resin was filled with angular-shaped silica particles prepared by crushing fused natural raw quartz. These particles were sorted into six groups having different mean sizes ranging from 2-47 μm. Flexural and compressive moduli of the cured epoxy resin slightly decreased with decrease in the particle size of the silica, whereas tensile modulus slightly increased. Flexural and tensile strengths increased with decrease in particle size. Fractured surfaces were observed using scanning electron microscopy to clarify the initiation point of fracture.

Notes: In order to reduce the internal stress in a cured epoxy resin, submicrometer-sized poly(butyl acrylate) (PBA)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) core-shell particles having cross-links were dispersed in the resin prior to curing. For the introduction of cross-links, monoethylene glycol dimethacrylate or glycidyl methacrylate monomer was copolymerized. Cross-links in the PBA core reduced the shrinkage of the cured epoxy resin, and cross-links at the PMMA shell produced a strong interaction with the epoxy matrix. The internal stress was reduced effectively by the introduction of cross-links.
