Notes: The diffusions of both caprolactam and water from nylon 6 melts have been measured using a semiinfinite geometry. The process involving diffusion and chemical reaction was analyzed utilizing Higbie's penetration model and known kinetic data. The caprolactam and water diffusion coefficients are, respectively, 8 × 10-8 and 2.5 × 10-4 cm2/sec. Using the data, molecular weight profiles were obtained for both semiinfinite and cylindrical geometries as a function of melt depth and time.

Notes: Depolymerization of amorphous polyacetaldehyde has been studied by measurements of weight loss versus time for thin films of the polymer in vacuum. Temperatures ranged from 40 to 80°C. The samples were prepared by freezing or melting the monomer in contact with treated glass surfaces. Light scattering, osmometry, and intrinsic viscosity measurements were used to characterize the polymers. Depolymerization rates were between second and third order with respect to the unvolatilized fraction, and the activation energy was 26.3 kcal. Much of the evidence points toward a slow unzipping reaction at the chain ends, but the analysis seems to be complicated by structural variations among the samples.

Notes: The distribution of molecular weights in realistic free-radical polymerizations with branching was analyzed theoretically. Series solutions were obtained for the fraction of molecules with r repeating units and the number of branch points contained in molecules with r repeating units. Branching by transfer processes was found to increase the proportion of both high and low molecular weight components in the system. The apportioning of branch points among r-mer molecules was shown to be somewhat narrower than a Poisson distribution. The major difference between the calculated distributions and previous model distributions for branched systems was the absence of discontinuities in the moments at all levels of branching.

Notes: The intrinsic viscosity ratio [η]B/[η]L was calculated as a function of average branching density for trifunctionally branched, free-radical polymers. Calculations were made for the g1/2, g3/2, and h3 rules, using realistic distributions of molecular weights and branches. Experimental data on branched poly(vinyl acetate) lay between the curves obtained from the g1/2 and h3 relations.

Notes: Based upon known polymerization kinetics, the extent and rate of re-equilibration of nylon 6 have been analyzed. Relationships have been developed for the calculation of the rates of molecular weight change and monomer regeneration as functions of initial water concentration, degree of polymerization, and type and concentration of end groups. The results are in good agreement with published data.

Notes: A reactor system consisting of a cascade of N perfectly mixed stirred tanks followed by a plug flow reactor was analyzed. Compared with a single-stage closed system, a substantial reduction in the total reaction time was indicated for systems using cascades of three or more stirred tanks. Calculations for both the micromixed and the segregated systems showed no significant difference between the respective total residence times.
