    Description: The Phase A baseline for the Shuttle Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF) consists of an 85-cm diameter Cassegrain telescope, cooled to temperatures in the range from 10 to 20 K to provide background limited imaging for up to six instruments contained within a multiple instrument chamber (MIC). Colder temperature zones are also provided. A cryogenics system for a 15-day mission lifetime was first considered. In another study, the feasibility was assessed to extend the lifetime of the baseline SIRTF concept to at least six months, taking into account a mission involving the use of a space platform or a free-flyer configuration. According to the considered requirements, the optics temperature is to be kept below 10 K for at least 30 days. The temperatures are not to exceed 20 K at the end of the six months mission. It is shown that by using solid hydrogen, long-life operation is feasible with present technology.

    Description: The Cryogenic Limb Array Etalon Spectrometer (CLAES) will be one of thirteen instruments on board the Upper Atmospheric Research Satellite (UARS) in late 1988. CLAES is to be employed for the measurement of stratospheric trace species concentrations affecting the ozone layer balance. It is an earth-limb viewing instrument which requires cryogenic cooling in order to obtain the necessary performance sensitivity. The present investigation is concerned with the solid hydrogen cryogen subsystem which provides the instrument temperature needed. Attention is given to the studies which led to the selection of solid hydrogen as cooling agent, the baseline cooler system, aspects of baseline performance sensitivity, and nominal cooler operations.

    Description: The liquid transparent film-forming, fluorocarbon, Spraylon, a protective coating for terrestrial solar cell modules was evaluated. Two modules were completed and field tested. Problems developed early in the field testing which led to the shortened test period, specifically, lifting of the antireflection coating, followed in some areas by complete film delamination. It is believed that although these problems were certainly induced by the presence of the SPRAYLON film, they were not failures of the material per se. Instead, assembly procedures, module design, and cell coating quality should be evaluated to determine cause of failure.

    Description: The Upper Atmospheric Research Satellite (UARS) program has the objective of providing an 18-month to 2-year platform for observations of the upper atmosphere, giving particular attention to the stratosphere, mesosphere, and lower thermosphere. The primary aims of the mission are related to the measurement of the solar energy input between 120 and 500 km, the acquisition of global maps of the vertical and horizontal distribution of a series of critical trace and minor species, and the investigation of the dynamics of the upper atmosphere. One of several instruments designed to perform neutral species measurements on board the satellite is the Cryogenic Limb Array Etalon Spectrometer (CLAES). The CLAES experiment is concerned with measurements of concentrations of species of interest to the ozone layer balance. Attention is given to the performance requirements of the instrument and the effects of these requirements on the cryogenic design.

    Description: If the vacuum vessel that insulates a cryogenic dewar for a spaceborne experiment prior to launch is damaged, air will leak into the vacuum insulation space. As the sudden heat load causes the pressure to rise in the dewar, a safety disk in the emergency vent line will burst at the design pressure differential to allow vaporized cryogenic fluid to escape. The emergency vent line should be sized such that sufficient gaseous cryogen will be vented to keep the pressure inside the dewar below the design limit. On the other hand, the line should not be so large as to impose an unnecessary heat load on the dewar filled with cryogenic fluid. A vent-line computer program was generated to compute the maximum flow rate allowed for a proposed vent-line system. Parametric studies have been carried out for different burst disk pressure differentials, liquid cryogen ullage, and vent-line sizes.

    Description: The design of the dual-stage Ne/CO2 cryostat, constructed for the Cryogenic Limb Array Etalon Spectrometer (CLAES) for the cooling, to their respective required operation temperatures, of the focal plane (to less than 15 K), spectrometer (to less than 30 K), telescope (to less than 150 K), and baffles (to less than 180 K) is described, and the cryostat's performance is analyzed. The results of this study show that the current cryostat will meet all sensor cooling requirements. The cryostat weighs 2276 lbs, of which 988 lbs are charged to the neon and 484 lbs are charged to the CO2. Schematic diagrams of the CLAES cooler/sensor and of the external plumbing are presented together with the test data.

    Description: The results of a test program designed to verify the operational and thermal performance of the Cryogenic Limb Array Etalon Spectrometer (CLAES) S/N001 Ne/CO2 cryostat, as monitored and serviced by the Data Acquisition System and Ground Support Equipment, are presented. The S/N001 model test assembly consists of the S/N001 configuration coupled with an instrument thermal mass simulator (ITMS) for simulating the thermal behavior of the instrument package. The test data for the cryostat include the rate of temperature decrease of the various parts of the cryostat/ITMS and the final equilibrium temperatures of the shields, thermal links, and tank. The test results showed that system heat rates, operating temperatures, and expected end-of-life temperature predictions all agree with predictions within estimated margins.

    Notes: 1 Chronic cold exposure of rats (7 days in a cold room at 4 °C) attenuated the sympathetic nerve stimulation (NS)-induced overflow of noradrenaline (NE) (measured by high-performance liquid chromatography, coupled to electrochemical detection) appearing in the perfusate/superfusate of the perfused mesenteric arterial bed as well as the increase in the perfusion pressure. 2 The same type of cold exposure resulted in an increase in tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) gene expression measured in the superior cervical ganglion and NE content measured in the mesenteric artery obtained from cold-exposed rats. 3 Addition of sodium nitroprusside, a nitric oxide (NO) donor, to the buffer perfusing the mesenteric arterial bed obtained from rats maintained at room temperature also resulted in an attenuation of the NS-induced overflow of NE and increase in perfusion pressure. 4  N c-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester (l-NAME), an NO synthase inhibitor, placed in the drinking water prevented the attenuation of the pre- and post-junctional responses to NS of the mesenteric arterial bed obtained from cold-exposed rats. 5  l-NAME treatment also increased the cold-induced elevation of blood pressure seen in whole animals. 6 The present results are consistent with the idea that cold exposure leads to a concomitant increase in sympathetic nerve activity and production of NO. We hypothesize that the increase in production and release of NO results in a decrease in the biologically active form of NE despite increased synthesis and release of the catecholamine. 7 It is concluded that the above-mentioned interactions serve as a protective mechanism offsetting the increased release and action of NE from sympathetic nerves and thus preventing the development of hypertension.
