Description: Overlapping complementary DNA clones were isolated from epithelial cell libraries with a genomic DNA segment containing a portion of the putative cystic fibrosis (CF) locus, which is on chromosome 7. Transcripts, approximately 6500 nucleotides in size, were detectable in the tissues affected in patients with CF. The predicted protein consists of two similar motifs, each with (i) a domain having properties consistent with membrane association and (ii) a domain believed to be involved in ATP (adenosine triphosphate) binding. A deletion of three base pairs that results in the omission of a phenylalanine residue at the center of the first predicted nucleotide-binding domain was detected in CF patients.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Riordan, J R -- Rommens, J M -- Kerem, B -- Alon, N -- Rozmahel, R -- Grzelczak, Z -- Zielenski, J -- Lok, S -- Plavsic, N -- Chou, J L -- DK34944/DK/NIDDK NIH HHS/ -- DK39690/DK/NIDDK NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1989 Sep 8;245(4922):1066-73.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Biochemistry, Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2475911" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: A polymorphic DNA marker has been found genetically linked, in a set of 39 human families, to an autosomal recessive gene that causes cystic fibrosis (CF), a disease affecting one in 2000 Caucasian children. The DNA marker (called D0CRI-917) is also linked to the PON locus, which by independent evidence is linked to the CF locus. The best estimates of the genetic distances are 5 centimorgans between the DNA marker and PON and 15 centimorgans between the DNA marker and the CF locus, meaning that the location of the disease gene has been narrowed to about 1 percent of the human genome (about 30 million base pairs). Although the data are consistent with the interpretation that a single locus causes cystic fibrosis, the possibility of genetic heterogeneity remains. The discovery of a linked DNA polymorphism is the first step in molecular analysis of the CF gene and its causative role in the disease.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Tsui, L C -- Buchwald, M -- Barker, D -- Braman, J C -- Knowlton, R -- Schumm, J W -- Eiberg, H -- Mohr, J -- Kennedy, D -- Plavsic, N -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1985 Nov 29;230(4729):1054-7.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2997931" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description / Table of Contents: The Importance of the Disperse Phase in the Corrosion of Iron in SoilThe effect of the soil water to soil air ratio upon the spread of corrosion on vertical arranged partly immersed iron specimens was investigated in various soils. While inwater unsaturated soils the whole surface of the iron specimen is covered with corrosion products, the corrosion is limited to the areas near the waterline if the saturation limit of the soil is transgressed. The influence of the sludges upon the corrosion of iron in soils depends first of all on the size of the particles, the altitude of the sediment volume and the character of the electrolyte. An alteration of the of the distribution of dispersity e.g. by an increased number of particles or by coarsening causes a noticeable effect on the distribution of oxygen at those spots along the column of liquid where the sediments are suspended.

Description / Table of Contents: On the Inhibition of the Corrosion of Buried IronThere is a report on some laboratory experiments on the inhibition of the corrosion of buried iron. The results are explained by means of the influences of the physical properties of the soil upon the suppression of the iron corrosion by the inhibitors Na2CrO4, NaNO2 and sodium benzoate. The results allow to recommend the application of inhibitors for uncovered ironpipes.
