Notes: Abstract The white light (3700 K) optical absorptivity has been measured, using a calorimetric method, for a series of rough cold-worked metal surfaces. Results show a strong maximum (∼30%) in absorptivity vs roughness. The depth variance of surface imperfections (from 20 to 700 nm) has been determined by measuring infrared reflectance of the samples.

Notes: Summary A method to describe the scattering of an electromagnetic wave by a rough metal surface whose imperfections are not small with respect to the wave-length is proposed. The surface is simulated as a plane uniformly covered by hemispheres of equal radii, the material is supposed to be a good conductor and the incident wave to propagate normally to the plane. The use of an addition theorem for spherical waves together with some statistical considerations allows the boundary conditions to come out in a simple form.

Notes: Summary The complex impedance of a water-filled cell has been measured in the frequency range between 0.01 Hz and 100 kHz at temperatures ranging between 5°C and 80°C. The obtained results have been interpreted according to the Gouy, Chapmann and Stern model describing the water behaviour in the presence of electrode interfaces. The deconvolution of the measured complex impedance allowed to separate the contribution arising from the «bulk» water from those due to the Helmholtz layer and to the diffuse charge layer occurring at the electrode interface. The capacitance and resistance of the three layers are reported and their frequency and temperature dependences are briefly discussed. The use of this method as a tool to investigate the low-frequency dielectric properties of water is suggested.

Notes: Summary The ultraweak radiation emitted from soya seeds during germination has been measured for different values of the temperature (20–35°C). The parameters relative to the photon emission time-counting series have been compared with the ones relative to germination and imbibition; it has been found that the activation energy relative to the process of the photon emission from live seeds is equal to that of the germination process (51 KJ/mole), demonstrating that the two processes are correlated. A function of the experimental parameters which eliminates the explicit dependence of the above biological processes on temperature has been proposed.

Notes: Summary The possibility of using the parameters connected to delayed luminescence to detect thermal stress conditions in soya seeds is discussed here and the results of the measurement of photoinduced emission conducted on soya seeds characterized by a different vegetative vigour are presented. A phenomenological relationship between the total re-emission and the growth velocity was found. The distributions of the decay times relative to the different conditions of stress on the seeds have given indications towards the existence of different dynamics. On the basis of the results it seems that a correlation exists between the functional state of the seeds and delayed luminescence.

Notes: Summary Photon emitted in the visible and near ultraviolet range by germinating soya seeds has been measured by means of a low-noise photomultiplier coupled to a data acquisition system. The photon energy spectrum, determined by means of a set of optical filters, shows two main contributions in the red and UV bands. Results show that both the radiation intensity and its spectrum change during germination according to seed physiological conditions. The photon emission of seeds at rest changes with their germinability. The UV component at the germination beginning is a factor 6 larger for living seeds than for the devitalized ones. This result can be interpreted as an experimental evidence of the existence of mitogenetic radiation.

Notes: Summary Soft-X-rays irradiation of yeast cells allows selective interference with different cellular structures. The monitoring of different physical parameters leads to substantial variations in the response to X-rays showing that monotonicity should not be taken for granted.

Notes: To develop nondestructructive, objective, quality indicators for tomatoes we measured delayed luminescence, firmness, soluble solids, dry matter, color and respiration during ripening in cherry tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum var. cerasiforme). They were harvested at various maturity stages and ripened in the dark at 20°C and 80% relative humidity. Ten days after harvest we observed on fruit showing similar color, significant differences in the delayed luminescence, soluble solids and dry matter, directly related to harvest maturity. We suggest that delayed luminescence can be used as a nondestructive indicator of important indicators of tomato fruit quality.

Notes: Abstract Photon emission in the visible and near ultraviolet range by samples of human tissue removed during surgery has been measured by means of a low noise photomultiplier coupled to a data acquisition system. The results show that among the 25 analyzed samples the 9 from normal tissues had an emission rate of the order of some tens of photons/cm2 min, while most of the 16 tumor tissue samples had a very much higher rate.
