    Notes: Abstract Through two-choice gustatory experiments, a␣preference hierarchy was established␣for␣the␣herbivorous gastropod Norrisianorrisi Sowerby, with laminarialean kelps preferred over all other seaweeds. Among the kelps, laminae of Macrocystispyrifera were slightly preferred over Egregiamenziesii, and both were strongly preferred over sporophylls of Eiseniaarborea. E.arborea, the least preferred kelp, was consistently chosen over other algae common in the snail's habitat (Halidrysdioica, Dictyotaflabellata, and Pterocladiacapillacea) and over seaweeds believed to be edible and palatable based on their morphology, structure, and secondary chemistry (Endarachnebinghamiae, Mazzaellaflaccida, and Ulvalobata). The morphologies and structural toughness of tested seaweeds varied significantly as did their nutritional (% carbon, % nitrogen, C:N ratio, and % ash) contents and phlorotannin concentrations; however, snails preferred to feed on kelps regardless of nutritional content, toughness or phlorotannin concentration; and among kelps preferred to feed on the least tough species (based on penetrometer measurements), which also were those containing the lowest phlorotannin concentrations. Preference for kelp was not upheld in experiments using agarose thalli to which freeze-dried powder, of either the kelp Eiseniaarborea or non-kelp Endarachnebinghamiae was added, suggesting the destruction of attractant chemicals during the making of the artificial foods. Our data suggest that the preference of N. norrisi for kelps over other potentially edible and palatable seaweeds may not be related to nutritional content, but instead may have evolved in response to factors such as availability, habitat provision, or refuge from predation.

    Notes: Abstract This study represents the first report of primary production rates for Southern California intertidal producers. The production rates of 18 marine macrophytes near Wilson Cove, San Clemente Island, are close to those for other marine algal communities. No apparent relationship was revealed between the productivity of an alga and the division to which it belongs; however, productivity was associated with growth form. Encrusting prostrate forms were the lowest producers in terms of g C/m2/h and g C/g dry weight/h; sheet-like and finely-branched forms showed a greater productivity than coarsely-branched forms. Gelidium pusillum and Ulva californica had considerably greater production rates than the other algae measured.

    Notes: Abstract The biological effects of a low-volume domestic sewage discharge were studied near Wilson Cove, San Clemente Island, California (USA), from February to June, 1972. There were fewer species and less cover near the outfall (7 macro-invertebrates, 17.6%; 13 macrophytes, 91.7%) than in nearby “unpolluted” control areas (9 macroinvertebrates, 9.2%; 30 macrophytes, 103.4%). The outfall biota was less diverse than that of the controls, as shown by 5 different diversity indices. A great reduction in community stratification (spatial heterogeneity) and, hence, community complexity occurred near the outfall; this reduction in stratification was primarilly due to the absence of Egregia laevigata, Halidrys dioica, Sargassum agardhianum and Phyllospadix torreyi. These were replaced in the mid-intertidal near the outfall by a low turf of blue-green algae, Ulva californica, Gelidium pusillum and small Pterocladia capillacea, and in the lower intertidal by Serpulorbis squamigerus covered with Corallina officinalis Var. chilensis. A statistically-based determination of assemblages or groups of organisms (i.e., cluster analysis) revealed 3 discrete outfall and 3 discrete control area groups; 3 assemblages contained samples from both areas. The distributional patterns of these groups indicate that near the outfall the degree of dilution of discharged sewage is more important in regulating zonation than is tidal height. The enhancement of the suspension feeder Serpulorbis squamigerus and the omnivores Ligia occidentalis, Pachygrapsus crassipes and Anthopleura elegantissima in the outer fringe of the outfall plume hypothetically is due to their ability to utilize sewage as a food source. A critical effect of the outfall may be to decrease environmental stability thereby favoring rapid-colonizers and more sewage-tolerant organisms. The outfall macrophytes were characterized by relatively higher net primary productivities, smaller growth forms, simpler and shorter life histories, and most were components of early successional stages.

    Notes: Abstract Diets and food selectivity of two stichaeid fishes (Cebidichthys violaceus and Xiphister mucosus) from the rocky intertidal zone of the central California coast (USA) were studied at each season of the year by gut content analysis and abundance measurements of potential macrophyte food items. Both fishes, after reaching a standard length of about 44 mm, were almost exclusively herbivorous. The bulk of the diet consisted of 8 to 10 species of chlorophytes and rhodophytes. These main dietary components were chiefly annual seaweeds with high surfaceto-weight ratios (sheetlike forms or small, highly branched forms). Perennial seaweeds were eaten in relatively large amounts only during the winter. Macrophytes eaten in only trace amounts included about 20 species of chlorophytes, chrysophytes, phaeophytes, rhodophytes and a spermatophyte. The small amount of animal material in the diet (never more than 2% by weight) could well have been ingested incidentally while the fishes were feeding on seaweeds. Food preference tests with up to 19 macrophyte species in the laboratory revealed that both fishes chose to eat three annual rhodophytes (Smithora naiadum, Porphyra perforata and Microcladia coulteri) in preference to Ulva lobata, an annual chlorophyte that was more abundant in the diets of field-caught specimens.

    Notes: Radioactive ion beams (RIBs) of short-lived isotopes of fluorine are in demand for investigating astrophysical phenomena related to the hot CNO cycle and rp processes responsible for stellar nucleosynthesis. Since negative ion beams are required for injection into tandem electrostatic accelerators, such as the 25 MV tandem accelerator used for post acceleration of RIBs for the Holifield radioactive ion beam facility research program at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, efficient, direct-formation F− ion sources are highly desirable. We have conceived and evaluated a direct extraction F− source for potential RIB applications which is predicated on the reverse polarity operation of a positive electron-beam-plasma target/ion source (EBPTIS) while simultaneously feeding fluorine-rich compounds and Cs vapor into the source. The source is found to operate in two separately distinct temperature regimes for the generation of F−: (1) a high cathode temperature regime or plasma mode and (2) a lower cathode temperature regime or surface ionization mode. For the latter mode of operation, net efficiencies of η=0.2% were attained for the EBPTIS; delay times, τ, attributable to the transport of F and fluoride compounds from the target to the ionization chamber of the source, typically, were found to be τ∼60 s. Brief descriptions of the EBPTIS and experimental techniques used in the studies, as well as net efficiency and effusive flow data for the negative EBPTIS, are presented in this article. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The principal factors that limit intensities of short-lived radioactive ion beams produced by the isotope separator on-line technique are time delays due to diffusion of radioactive species from solid or liquid target materials and their effusive-flow transport to the ion source. Although diffusion times can be reduced by proper design of short diffusion length, highly refractory targets, effusive-flow times are more difficult to assess. After diffusion from the target material, the species must travel through the target material and vapor transport system to the ion source. The time required for effusive-flow transport to the ion source depends on the conduction path, chemical reactions between the species and target material and materials of construction, as well as the physical size and geometry of the transport system. We have developed a fast valve (0.1 ms closing time) for introducing gaseous or vapor-state species into the target/vapor transport/ion source/system that permits measurement of effusive-flow times for any gaseous or vaporous species (chemically active or chemically inactive) through any vapor transport system, independent of size and geometry. Characteristic times are determined from the exponential decay of the momentum analyzed ion beam intensity for the species during effusive flow through the vapor transport system under evaluation. This article describes the effusive-flow apparatus and presents characteristic time spectra and characteristic effusive-flow time data for noble gases flowing through a serial-flow target reservoir system. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Direct extraction, negative-surface ionization, and sputter-type sources have been designed to efficiently ionize specific members of the group VII A elements (F, Cl, Br, I, and At) for use in the nuclear structure physics and nuclear astrophysics research programs at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility (HRIBF). A negative surface ionization source that utilizes a solid, spherical geometry, LaB6 ionizer (φ≅2.7 eV) for negatively ionizing Cl, Br, l, and At. During off-line evaluation, the ionization efficiency for Cl− generation ranged between 15% and 20% and for Br− generation, between 15% and 25%. Chemically active elements, such as fluorine, are often released from refractory host materials in a variety of molecular forms. Consequently, the LaB6 surface ionization source, described above, is ineffective for simultaneously dissociating and negatively ionizing this element. To overcome this problem, a new concept source, referred to as the kinetic ejection negative ion source (KENIS), was developed. The source utilizes the Cs-sputter technique to effectively dissociate molecular carriers and ionize F at efficiencies in excess of 7%. The source has been used on-line to inject 〉3×107 17F−/s into the tandem accelerator and deliver ∼3×106 17F9+/s (fully stripped) to the research station for completion of important nuclear-astrophysics experiments. In this article, emphasis will be placed on the design details, materials of construction, ion optics, operational parameters, thermal transport properties, emittances, and measured ionization efficiencies for these sources. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.
