Notes: Abstract A type of extensions called the θ-extention of topological spaces and their θ-equivalence and θ-trace systems are introduced, which ultimately characterize H-closed θ-extensions of a Hausdorff topological space. Also, the notion of θ-principal extensions is defined. A typical θ-principal extension consisting of certain grills on a Hausdorff space is constructed, and finally, some characterizations of H-closedness of a Hausdorff space are obtained.

Notes: The direct-methods program MULTAN88 has been applied to a known protein, ribonuclease (RNAP1), containing 808 non-H atoms, including five S atoms, plus 83 ordered solvent water molecules. Phase sets with mean phase errors between 69 and 75° were selected by modified figures of merit for trials with the full data at 1.17 Å resolution and also with restricted data at 1.25 and 1.5 Å resolution. These figures of merit had previously only been applied to protein structures containing heavy atoms, and this is the first demonstration of their usefulness with no heavy atom present. An initial set of 1091 phases from a 1.17 Å trial was developed by an objective procedure to give the full structure with a residual of 0.21, which agrees well with the published structure.

Notes: The direct-methods program SAYTAN has been applied to the known structure of 2-Zn insulin with 806 atoms, excluding solvent, in the asymmetric unit. Useful sets of phases can be obtained and selected by figures of merit for data resolutions between 1.5 and 2.25 Å and these can be extended by SAYTAN to give mean phase errors of 68° for more than 2000 reflections. A feature of the phases so found is that the phase errors decrease with increasing resolution – which is the opposite of the situation when phases are found by isomorphous-replacement techniques.

Notes: The direct-methods program SA YTAN is applied to data at various restricted resolutions for a small protein. It is shown that useful sets of phases can be obtained even down to 3 Å resolution. Conventional figures of merit are not very discriminating for the phase sets developed, but modified figures of merit seem capable of selecting the better phase sets, at least for those generated from 2 Å or higher resolution data.

Notes: [Auszug] Colonies on Ashby's nitrogen-deficient agar are raised, and are usually oval with mean diameters of 4-6 X 3-3 mm. ; but some, especially of the larger colonies, may be pulvinate. At first the colonies are transparent with a yellow tinge, but in three or four days they turn chocolate brown and ...

Notes: Termitomyces clypeatus secreted a 24-kDa xylanase constitutively in xylan medium, but required a gluconeogenic amino acid or Krebs cycle acid for the secretion of a 56-kDa amyloglucosidase in dextrin medium. Aspartate, glutamate, succinate and fumarate all increased secretion of amyloglucosidase from 50% to 〉90% and enzyme production by 10-fold with little effect on xylanase production. Glutamate or succinate stimulated in vitro release of intracellular amyloglucosidase from washed mycelia in the presence of cycloheximide. Amyloglucosidase accumulated in the absence of glutamate was a high-molecular-mass protein that did not migrate in PAGE. Cellular regulation by the fungus of the secretion of amyloglucosidase is indicated.

Notes: PbS particles of average diameters ranging from 9.9 to 18.0 nm have been synthesized within a polyacrylamide matrix. The percolative chains of these particles exhibit intrinsic semiconducting behavior at temperatures higher than 340 K. The estimated band gap for these particles are found to be much higher than that of bulk PbS being in the range 1.03 to 1.49 eV. The low-temperature conductivity of these composites appears to be controlled by an electron tunneling mechanism.

Notes: Glass ceramics containing micrometer-sized lead zirconate titanate have been synthesized and nanometer-sized lead sulphide (PbS) phase has been grown within these by treatment in hydrogen sulphide gas. The PbS particle sizes vary from 4.4 to 15.3 nm. Dielectric measurements on the nanocomposites have been carried out in the temperature range 120–300 K. The dielectric constant values for composites containing PbS exhibit drastic increase as compared to those of the glass ceramic samples. For specimens with PbS size varying from 4.4 to 15.3 nm the corresponding volume fraction of PbS being 0.07 and 0.14 the values range from 900 to 3500 at a frequency of 1 kHz. Bergman's [D. J. Bergman, Phys. Rev. C 43, 377 (1978)] analytical formulation with some density functions has been used to calculate the value of effective dielectric permittivity for the various nanocomposites. The theoretical values do not show any agreement with the experimentally observed data. However, more spectral weight functions need to be tried before any conclusion can be drawn regarding the mechanism responsible for the present experimental data. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.
