Notes: Transmission electron micrographs resolving (100) lattice fringes of clinohumite revealed faults parallel to (100). A simplified model of humite minerals, which interprets them as layers of forsterite and brucite-sellaite, was used for analysis of the faults. These compositional faults produce one or two unit layers of humite and/or chondrodite interlayered between the regular sequence of clinohumite along a*. Thus, nonstoichiometric compositions of humite minerals can be explained as mixed layers.

Notes: [Auszug] A single crystal olivine (10 moles per cent fayalite; 350 mg in weight) was subjected to a plane shock wave of about 320 kbar pressure propagated in the crystal-lographic direction [100]. According to McQueen et oZ.1, the temperature in olivine does not exceed 500 C at this shock pressure. The ...

Notes: Deformation experiments under high static confining pressure and observations on tectonically deformed specimens have shown that orthoenstatite (space group Pbca) can be transformed to clinoenstatite (P21/c) by shear stress. The specimen used for the present study was prepared by ion-thinning from an orthoenstatite sample deformed at 800°C and 5 kb confining pressure at a strain rate of 10−4s−1.

Notes: Summary The principal mineral component in the matrix of the Cochabamba carbonaceous chondrite is a phyllosilicate, which is identified as cronstedtite mainly on the basis of its chemical composition. Its approximate idealized formula is given by M6 Fe 0.7 3+ Al0.5Si2.7O10 (OH)8 with M=Fe2+, Fe3+, and Mg in somewhat variable amounts. TEM studies reveal the presence of three polytypes, and show a high degree of stacking disorder parallel to (001) with the displacement vector ±b/3 or ±2b $$\bar 3$$ . Crumpled amorphous masses in the matrix may contain structural building blocks of phyllosilicates. They, rather than the anhydrous minerals, seem to be the most likely progenitors of cronstedtite. Some constraints on its origin are reviewed. In addition to cronstedtite, observations on some other matrix phases are also reported.

Notes: Abstract Two kinds of glasses are to be found in the breccias of the Ries basin both which have been generated by shock wave action on the rocks of the crystalline basement: a) Normal glasses, containing flow structures and vesicles; they are formed by shock waves of high energy which after unloading, leave behind material, the temperature of which is above the melting point. b) Diaplectic glasses without vesicles and flow structures, preserving the grain boundaries, cleavages and twin lamellae of the primary minerals; they are formed by shock waves of lower energy which destroy the crystal lattice but after unloading, leave behind material, the temperature of which is below the melting point. — Measurements have been taken of the density and index of refraction of diaplectic quartz- and plagioclase-glasses. The values obtained proved to be higher than those of the normal glasses and lower than those of the crystalline phases. Diaplectic glasses are distinguishable from normal glasses by their physical properties. They represent intermediate stages of structural order between the crystalline and normal glass phases.

Notes: Abstract As part of an electron microscopic study of plagioclase, displacement vectors for b- and c-domains have been determined from contrast experiments and calculations. In lunar anorthite from breccia 15459 (An 94.9), b-domains could be imaged in dark field with b-reflections and c-domains with c-reflections. The vector corresponding to these contrast conditions is 1/2[110] for b-domains and 1/2[111] for c-domains. The face centering vector 1/2 [110] relates two domains with a reverse Al/Si arrangement. The body-centering vector 1/2[111] relates domains of identical Al/Si distribution but different atomic coordinates. Fringe patterns for c-domains have been obtained for Pasmeda anorthite. Calculated intensity profiles applying multi-beam dynamic theory and a 1/2[111] displacement vector are in agreement with the observations.

Notes: Abstract A unique clinopyroxene (En19Fs78Wo3), clinoeulite, space group P21/c, $${\text{(Fe}}_{{\text{1}}{\text{.48}}} {\text{Mg}}_{{\text{0}}{\text{.37}}} {\text{Mn}}_{{\text{0}}{\text{.08}}}^{{\text{2 + }}} {\text{Ca}}_{{\text{0}}{\text{.05}}} {\text{Al}}_{{\text{0}}{\text{.01}}} {\text{)}}_{{\text{1}}{\text{.99}}} {\text{ [Si}}_{{\text{2}}{\text{.01}}} {\text{O6],}}$$ contains sharp exsolution lamellae of ferroaugite (En17Fs43Wo40) from which the former presence of a ferropigeonite near En17Fs70Wo13 can be calculated. This two-pyroxene intergrowth is the main component of a eulysite containing also magnetite, olivine (Fo9Fa86Te5), quartz, oligoclase-K feldspar inter-growth, and retrograde cummingtonite with about 76 % grunerite end member. The occurrence of this most unusual rock type in the center of the Vredefort structure is attributed to a period of high-temperature metamorphism (at least 800 °–850 °C) which was followed by hot deformation of the rock during the Vredefort event thus probably preventing the common formation of orthopyroxene through pigeonite exsolution and inversion upon cooling. After this tectonic deformation, the rock recrystallized within the low-temperature stability range of clinoeulite to yield fine annealing textures. Late-stage equilibria at temperatures well below 500 °C include the complete unmixing of a former high-temperature anorthoclase, a Mg/Fe redistribution in the clinoeulite and olivine and, with the introduction of water, the partial formation of cummingtonite through reaction of clinoeulite, olivine, and quartz. During weathering the olivine was transformed to a nearly opaque, anhydrous ferrisilicate which, except for the change of Fe2+ to Fe3+ and the oxygen introduction, largely retained its original chemistry.
