Notes: Compares the scientific management, human resources and socio-technological systems approaches to management to identify the fundamental characteristics, and limitations, of each. It shows that changes in society, and corresponding expectations of workers, render each of these approaches obsolete. Attempts to show that TQM adopts the best features of each and synthesizes them into a more complete and coherent way of managing processes and people.

Notes: Health-care systems (HCS) are different from other industrial/commercial systems in that they can be influenced by moral and ethical considerations. In recent times, total quality management (TQM) has been implemented in many business sectors, as a means of focusing on the needs and aspirations of customers and using this focus to drive activity and improvement effort. HCS deal with a particular type of consumer - the patient - who may be old, confused, or otherwise vulnerable. Argues that TQM, when implemented in HCS, requires an understanding of the particular nature of the sector, which influences the parameters of quality relating to patient care and their subsequent measurement.

Notes: Underlines the dominance of the service sector in the future global economy and explains the characteristic features and elements of a service organization. Explains that with the growing maturity of society with respect to education, culture and standards of living, the user expectations and demands for improved quality of service are increasing. This is part of the pressure causing service organizations to explore total quality management (TQM) as a means of driving quality improvement into all their activities. Outlines a framework for implementing TQM within the service sector.

Notes: Productivity is concerned with the effective and efficient transformation of resources into desired outputs. Manufacturing, traditionally, has paid great attention to this conversion in terms of its effect on organisational profit but not on its harmful environmental effects. As pressures rise to establish "green manufacturing" processes, the issue becomes one of both being seen as socially responsible, and as conforming to increasing legislative and regulatory frameworks. "Green manufacturing" implies the minimisation of (especially harmful) waste. Introduces a particular approach to addressing the concept of "wastivity" (a variation on productivity that involves the identification of both "structural" and operational waste) and describes a case study in an Indian manufacturing organisation at which the approach was used.

Notes: Industrial engineering has been around for 50 years and has stood the test of time: BPR for less than ten. BPR has emerged because the world itself is now different - the pressures on organisations are much greater, having to compete in a global economy. Attempts to describe key features of BPR and factors affecting its successful implementation. Suggests ways in which BPR and IE may need to work together: the two are complementary rather than competitive.

Notes: Industrial and commercial organizations are socio-technological systems: the social sub-system is a prime factor in the achievement of growth through the introduction of technology. The efficient and effective utilization of the technological sub-system depends on the leadership and decision making which underpins the organizational mission. The inter-relationship between the technological and social sub-systems is both an important part of, and directly affects, the culture of the organization. This culture changes over time - in accordance with the demands of, and changing values of, society. In recent years, TQM has been a major influence on culture change in organizations - such devices as quality circles, small group activities, continuous improvement projects, self-managing teams, and total employee involvement programmes are aimed directly at raising the contribution of employees but are instrumental in the process of culture change, which is the primary focus of TQM. Discusses how an organization can bring about such change.

Notes: The key issue in today's dynamic and competitive global scenario is how to develop, utilize and sustain continuously the knowledge potentials in an enterprise. This issue is about knowledge management. In this paper, an attempt is made to discuss the various issues of a learning organization and present an organizational learning model, which has helped to evaluate manufacturing strategies and select advanced manufacturing technology, based on strategic, tactical and monetary factors. The efficacy of the model is illustrated through an application.

Notes: Attempts to explain the dimensions of total quality management(TQM) in service systems. There are varied perspectives inconceptualizating, articulating and implementing TQM in a very largenumber of differentiated service organizations. Aims to synthesize theseperspectives and present an example of TQM implementation in a bankingsystem. Proposes a conceptual model for measuring the effectiveness ofTQM in service systems.
