Notes: Topographical evolution of 100 MeV Au8+-ion-irradiated InP surfaces was studied using atomic-force microscopy (AFM). The surfaces were roughened under dense electronic excitations. Root-mean-square roughness measured from AFM studies showed an exponential saturation behavior with fluence. Sample temperature during irradiation was found as a parameter to control the amount of roughness on the surface and the evolution of irradiated surface topography is discussed in terms of thermal spike model. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: [Auszug] We used DNA-intercalating drugs to eliminate the non-integrated episomes from the transformed strains of Neuro-spora. Both ethidium bromide and acridine have been used successfully to induce loss of autonomous episomes from bacteria6'8 and their mode of action is well known9?11. The drug-induced ...

Notes: Nanosize particles (average size ∼12 nm) of mixed ferrite Mn0.65Zn0.35Fe2O4 were prepared by the hydrothermal precipitation route and studied using x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, magnetization measurements, and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The as-prepared sample was largely ferrimagnetic and, as the sample was annealed at temperatures above 250 °C, it gradually became superparamagnetic. This unexpected behavior is explained by assuming that the cation distribution in the nanosize as-prepared sample is in a metastable state and, as the sample is heated, this distribution changes to a more stable state while the grain size remains nearly the same. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Summary An enzyme, galactosyltransferase, able to catalyze the formation of galactose polymers was detected in cell-free extracts of a wild type strain of Neurospora crassa. Enzyme activity was found in both the supernatant and the particle fractions after centrifugation at 100,000 xg. The enzyme assayed in the 100,000 xg supernatant showed a 4fold difference in specific activity as compared to that found in the particle fraction.

Notes: Summary Slow growing mutants of Neurospora crassa were obtained by ethidium bromide treatment of the wild type strain. A particular mutant ER-3 showed stopper phenotype accompanied by deficient cytochrome spectra. The mutant showed an altered restriction pattern of the mtDNA which indicated a deletion of 25,000bp. The phenotype of the ethidium bromide induced mutant ER-3 seem to be related to the loss of several essential genes due to a deletion in its mtDNA.

Notes: Abstract Temperature-dependent electrical resistivity in a set of YBa2Cu3O7−x /Ag composites, all prepared under an identical sintering schedule, is analyzed to extract granularity information. The weak-link resistivity ρ wl across the grain boundaries and the percolation factor α arising due to current frustration caused by misalignment of anisotropic grains and sample defects such as voids and cracks are estimated from the residual resistivity ρ0 and the temperature coefficient of resistivity dρ/dT. Variation of these parameters with Ag vol.% quantifying the extent of granularity indicates that granularity in the composites decreases and their electrical characteristics tend to be identical to that of Ag-free YBa2Cu3O7−x single crystals and epitaxial thin films as Ag vol.% approaches a value where onset of current percolation occurs through Ag channels. The increased α and decreased ρ wl observed at higher Ag vol.% explains the larger grains in the composites with narrow size distribution.

Notes: Abstract Various defects arising from lattice mismatch and coordination incompatibility at the cation sites are known to lend the cuprates a metastable state at temperatures and pressures where they exhibit superconductivity. The present paper considers the metastability induced by coordination incompatibility at Cu(1) sites in oxygen-deficient 123 type systems and looks for their possible effects on charge and spin degrees of freedom. Depending upon the concentration of oxygen vacancies, the resulting unstable charge state at the Cu(1) sites is shown to either temporally fluctuate or spatially equilibrate, providing a mechanism for the 90 K and the 60 K plateaus, with a peak in the former observed in the YBa2Cu3O7-y , samples prepared under thermodynamic equilibrium conditions.

Notes: Abstract Thermal decomposition of the amorphous coprecipitate of yttrium and aluminium hydroxides forming yttrium aluminium garnet has been investigated employing thermal analyses, X-ray diffraction and IR spectroscopy. On heating, the coprecipitate progressively loses water forming a stable but highly disordered hydroxy garnet which crystallizes at ∼1180 K and decomposes to YAG at ∼1290 K. Nucleation of the crystalline phase appears to begin at ∼800 K.
