Notes: In pursuit of zero-defect quality, a growing number of JITmanufacturing firms often consider a line-stop strategy that allowsworkers to stop the assembly line when abnormalities occur duringproduction process, and to repair defects immediately as they occur. Theline-stop strategy contrasts with a traditional off-line repair strategythat either scraps the defects or sends them to a separate repairstation. Develops an expected total cost model to demonstrate thecost-effectiveness of the line-stop strategy over the off-line repairstrategy in JIT environments. Computational experiments indicate thatcost savings resulting forum using the line-stop strategy are greaterthan those using the off-line repair strategy.

Notes: As the Clinton administration recently released its plan for developing world-wide information superhighways and making electronic communications a national priority, a growing number of firms have shown increased interest in electronic commerce (EC) as an effective business-to-business purchasing tool. A high level of interest in EC is piqued by its ability to reduce order cycle time, paperwork, order processing error, and procurement cost. Realizing such managerial benefits, buying firms need to reassess their current business-to-business purchasing strategy which, in most cases, still relies on traditional paper-based transactions. To identify strategic variables that influence the successful implementation of EC and then help evaluate the strategic importance of EC to business-to-business purchasing, this paper reports the findings of an empirical study of US purchasing organizations.

Notes: Over the last two decades, growing concerns about eroding ecosystem quality have led to a renewed interest in environmentalism. Such concerns have prompted purchasing professionals to reassess their current purchasing strategy. To help purchasing professionals configure an environmentally conscious (green) purchasing strategy, the empirical findings from a survey of US firms with greater environmental risks are reported. Based on the empirical findings, aims to identify variables that either promote or inhibit the successful implementation of green purchasing and to evaluate the effects of green purchasing on the firm's supplier selection, waste management, packaging, and regulatory compliance.

Notes: To stay competitive, hotels need to develop a viable customer retention strategy. Since a key to the successful development of such a strategy rests with customer relationship management, hotels should identify the most profitable ways to build and maintain a loyal customer relationship. In an effort to help hotels understand their customers' preferences and the ways to interact with the customers, we propose data mining techniques. Based on a case study of luxury hotels in South Korea, this paper demonstrates the usefulness and practicality of the proposed data mining techniques.

Notes: As the globalization of business activities broadens and diversifieslogistics operations, many logistics managers have found themselveschallenged by extreme complexities and uncertainties. Consequently, planning and control of multinational firms (MNFs) have become onerousdue to the multiplicity of international decision environments. Perhapsthe most effective way of coping with such challenges is to utilize anintegrated decision support system (IDSS) linking world-widecommunication and distribution networks among the parent company, itsforeign business partners and third-party logisticians. In response tosuch a need, provides important guidelines for the design anddevelopment of an integrated DSS that helps the multinational firmcentrally to control and co-ordinate international transfers.

Notes: In an era of global sourcing, the multinational firm's success oftenhinges on the most appropriate selection of its foreign suppliers.International supplier selection, however, is very complicated and riskyowing to a variety of uncontrollable and unpredictable factors affectingthe decision. These factors may include political situations, tariffbarriers, cultural and communication barriers, trade regulations andagreements, currency exchange rates, cultural differences, ethicalstandards, quality standards and so forth. Nevertheless, a vast majorityof the purchasing literature still focuses on the domestic aspects andneglects international supplier selection research. Proposes multipleattribute utility theory which can help purchasing professionals toformulate viable sourcing strategies in the changing world marketplace.

Notes: Uncovers the facts and fallacies of the Japanese distribution channel and presents proactive distribution strategies with their managerial benefits, for the successful penetration of the Japanese market. Frustrated US policy makers and business representatives have been crying "foul" for years over the difficulties in penetrating the Japanese market. They believe that a web of formal and informal Japanese trade barriers prevent US companies from getting a fair chance to sell their products in Japan. The Japanese distribution channel is often symbolic of such barriers. In general, it is characterized as closed and complex with multiple layers of middlemen leading to a large number of small-scale "mom-and-pop" retail stores. Due to its non-conventional structure, the Japanese distribution channel often has been misunderstood by many Westerners and subsequently such misunderstanding has led to unnecessary trade disputes with the Japanese government.

Notes: Chronic driver turnover can adversely influence a trucking firm's competitiveness through disrupted delivery services, equipment down time and excessive recruiting expenses. Thus, a key to the survival of the trucking firm rests with its ability to recruit and retain qualified drivers who are less likely to cause turnover. In an effort to develop the ways to recruit and retain those drivers, we propose data mining techniques. Based on an empirical study of trucking firms in the USA, this paper not only develops a viable driver recruitment and retention strategy, but it also demonstrates the usefulness of the proposed data mining techniques.

Notes: As quality and profitability have become inseparable concepts, a growing number of service firms have considered quality their top priority in maintaining competitiveness. Commitment to service quality, however, is nothing more than lip service, unless management develops reliable service quality standards. Perhaps one of the best ways of developing such standards is to compare the firm's service performance with that of the service leader and reassess its service performance continuously through competitive benchmarking. In an effort to establish practical guidelines for competitive benchmarking, proposes the use of an analytic hierarchy process and a competitive gap analysis. These methods can help the service manager to formulate viable service improvement strategies in the increasingly competitive service industry. Illustrates the usefulness of the proposed benchmarking methodology using the case of Korean luxury hotels.

Notes: Total customer satisfaction is one of the most important strategic weapons of best-practice hotel organizations. However, hotel organizations cannot achieve total customer satisfaction without gaining the knowledge of a hotel's competitive position in the changing marketplace and realizing the opportunity of continuous service improvement. With this in mind, this paper develops a set of service benchmarks that help hotel managers monitor their service delivery process, identify performance gaps, and take corrective action. In particular, we propose dynamic benchmarking based on the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) that goes beyond traditional service performance measures. Based on the longitudinal surveys of customers who have stayed at first-class hotels in Korea, this paper illustrates the usefulness of dynamic benchmarking for continuous service improvement.
