    Notes: A new analog memory (AM) has been demonstrated using heterojunction acoustic charge transport (HACT) technology. The initial HACT AMs had storage time capabilities of 100 μs at 25 °C. The Schottky electrode storage array had 36 memory cells, each cell holding 2 charge packets, giving a maximum signal frequency of half the Nyquist frequency. Hold voltages in the 6–8 V range were found to be adequate, and effective storage was obtained at the same dc transport current level that resulted in the best charge transport efficiency. Storage times in the millisecond range are possible with cooling.

    Notes: The burrow morphology of the Japanese eel Anguilla japonica was studied using in situ resin-casting in a mud bottomed tidal drainage channel adjacent to the Fukui River in Tokushima, Japan. Two eels (62·5 and 56·3 cm total length) were initially fished from the burrows to verify that they were being used by A. japonica. Casts were made of 10 burrows that were found to have from one to three openings and main tunnels that were parallel to the axis of water flow in the channel. The maximum depths of the tunnels in the mud were 17·8–30·0 cm. The diameters of main tunnels ranged from 1·2 to 7·9 cm, were almost always wider than the bodies of the Japanese eels examined, and were more variable in the horizontal axis than in the vertical axis. There were no other animals capable of constructing a long and thin burrow in this channel, so these observations indicate that anguillids are able to construct their own burrows in soft mud sediments that may be used for extended periods of time.

    Notes: The otolith microstructures of the leptocephali of Saurenchelys stylura and Dysomma sp., collected in November and December 2000 in the East China Sea, were examined to determine their larval ages and growth rates, and the spawning times of these two species of outer shelf and slope marine eels. Leptocephali ranging in size from 8 to 48 mm total length were examined, and the nettastomatid, S. stylura, and the synaphobranchid, Dysomma sp., had estimated ages that ranged from 16 to 75 days and 17 to 66 days, respectively. The overall growth rate of S. stylura was 0·68 mm day−1(n = 21), and of Dysomma sp. was 0·44 mm day−1(n = 22). These growth rates were similar or slightly faster than those observed for anguillid leptocephali in offshore areas of the western Pacific. The backcalculated hatching dates for these two species were from September to November. The otolith increment widths of S. stylura showed an increase before 20 to 30 days that were similar to those in anguillid species, but in Dysomma sp. there were no remarkable increases.

    Notes: The growth and activity of juvenile Japanese eels Anguilla japonica in different pigmentation stages from the glass eel to the elver stage were studied in the laboratory at 15, 20 and 25° C. The growth and activity of the eels were significantly influenced by both temperature and fish size. Growth rate generally declined with increasing fish size, and fish were least active and experienced a low growth during the pigmenting stage at all temperatures. They were nocturnal and spent significantly more time moving (swimming, feeding and moving over the substratum) at 20 and 25° C than at 15° C at night within each pigmentation stage. Accordingly, they grew significantly faster at 20 and 25° C than at 15° C throughout the study. The development of pigmentation appeared to be dependant on water temperature but not on fish size. This study suggested that the growth and activity of juvenile Japanese eels were positively correlated, because fish were least active and grew slowest at low temperature (15° C) or during the pigmenting stage at all temperatures.

    Notes: Summary The problem of representing the drag due to subgridscale orography is examined. Results from model simulations are used to illustrate clear deficiencies in the global angular momentum budgets and possible ways of correcting for these deficiencies are considered. It is argued that a formulation for the stress due to subgridscale gravity waves is required, as was first recognized by Boer et al. (1984a, b), and the impact of a scheme based on Palmer et al. (1986) is presented. The scheme is improved by using directionally-dependent subgridscale orographic variances. Results from 90-day integrations using the ECMWF and UKMO models with similar resolutions are very much in accord both with and without a wave drag parametrization scheme; showing much improved wintertime circulations. The relationship between the wave drag and the model orography is examined with the use of idealized stress profiles whereby the wave drag is limited to either near the surface or in the stratosphere. A combination of parametrized wave drag with an envelope orography performs best at this stage of development. Results are presented from a substantial series of ten-day forecast experiments with the ECMWF operational model using mean and (1 σ) envelope orographies, these show significant improvements in forecast skill.

    Notes: A new method of instrumentation for normal-stress determinations was developed, making possible accurate unsteady state as well as steady state measurements, eliminating errors arising from fluid-filled pressure-tap holes, and permitting the determination of the complete stress state in a single cone-and-plate shearing-geometry experiment. Sensitive, nonflow semiconductor pressure transducers mounted at several radial positions with their pressuresensing diaphragms flush with the plate surface provide data for the normal-stress distribution. The normal-stress distribution, together with the total normal force from the single-geometry experiment, enables determination of the primary and secondary normal-stress differences by two independent methods of analysis while the transmitted torque enables determination of the viscosity, each as a function of shear rate. Only the normal-stress distribution is required if an independent check on the normal-stress determination is not desired. Similar advantages arise in the application of the instrumentation to a parallel-plate shearing geometry, The new instrumentation was used in the determination of the complete rheological stress state of three aqueous and two “Tetralin” solutions of polymers in a cone-and-plate shearing geometry shear rates of 0.02 to 450 s-1 on a Model R-17 Weissenberg Rheogoniometer. The normalstress differences computed by means of two methods of analysis are in surprisingly good agreement. The ratio of the secondary to the primary normal-stress difference was negative. The absolute values of this ratio decreased with increases in the shear rate, the maximum observed value being 0.4.
