    Notes: From particle confinement criteria for field-reversed configurations it is found that only a portion of (H,Pθ) space, or equivalently, of velocity space, provides confinement. A loss region in velocity space is found. The effects of this loss region in velocity space are investigated. The velocity-space particle loss, i.e., particle loss caused by the existence of a loss region in velocity space, because of collisions is calculated from the Fokker–Planck equation. The corresponding scaling law for particle confinement is obtained. In collisional equilibrium, a simple analytical expression is verified to be a good representation of the actual velocity distribution in the presence of the loss region in velocity space. It is shown that velocity-space particle loss in field-reversed configurations is an important mechanism for particle loss, as well as the occurrence and spin-up of plasma rotation.

    Notes: Abstract I shall discuss the use of radio galaxies to study the Universe during its first few billion years. After presenting evidence that a fundamental connection exists between nuclear activity and galaxy evolution, I shall review some properties of distant radio galaxies. There are several arguments that these objects play an important role in the formation evolution of galaxies and clusters. The last part of the talk addresses some fundamental questions that arise from this work and discusses how they can be attacked during the first decade of the new millennium.

    Notes: Abstract The evaluation of the dependence of the generation probability N(A) on the nuclear mass A at low energy nuclear transmutation of nickel by incorporated protons indicated the preference of the virtual state of compound nuclei at or near A = 306. Combining this result with the new magic number 180 derived recently from the transmutation experiments providing a consistency proof of the experiments, arrives at a very probable nuclide 308X126 distinguished with two magic numbers.

    Notes: Abstract The similarity of the abundance of heavy nuclei in the Universe with that of the nuclei produced in the fully reproducible reactions of protons in host metals like palladium, nickel or others is evident and can be described by the same exponential function of the distribution probability N(Z) depending on the proton number Z of the nuclides. This agrees with the earlier derived consequence of a 3 n relation for magic numbers and an alternative foundation of the nuclear shell model. Compared to femtometer-attosecond reactions in the big bang, the low energy nuclear reactions in the host metals have picometer distances and megasecond duration. For this picometer distance, a combination of the swimming electron layer and Debye screening model with a metal-plasma dielectric model is presented.

    Notes: Abstract A low-tritium-inventory, high-power-density, pool-type chamber approach to inertial confinement fusion is introduced. The concept uses target designs with internal tritium and3He breeding, eliminating the need for a lithium-breeding blanket. The fraction of the fusion energy carried out by neutrons is estimated as 10%, compared with 70% in a typical D-T system, and the neutron spectrum is softer. Liquid metals other than lithium that are less chemically reactive, such as lead, can be used for first-wall protection. The reduced neutron component and the elimination of the need for a thick lithium blanket for tritium breeding lead to higher power densities and more compact chamber designs. The radiation damage at the first structural wall is reduced, leading to potentially longer wall lifetimes. A significant environmental advantage in terms of reduced radioactive release risks under operational and accident conditions is identified, primarily due to the one to two orders of magnitude reduction in the tritium inventories compared with D-T-based systems.

    Notes: A pilot unit for the high-temperature irradiation of flowing reactants was designed for the beam port of a nuclear reactor. Radiation-thermal cracking of the n-heptane-hydrogen system was studied with molal H2/C7 ratios from 0 to 5 at 250 lb./sq. in., 600° to 750°F., 2 to 8 min. residence time, and up to 3,600 rep./min. Although conversions were low, the decomposition rate was significantly increased by radiation giving G values 〉 103. Product distributions were not significantly altered by radiation. These results, while different from low-temperature data, appear consistent with other published high-temperature results. Radiation yields were found to be reasonably linear with total dose from 0 to 14 krep., but a twofold increase was observed in passing from a molal H2/C7 ratio of 0 to 0.5.
