    Description: Background Sakha – an area connecting South and Northeast Siberia – is significant for understanding the history of peopling of Northeast Eurasia and the Americas. Previous studies have shown a genetic contiguity between Siberia and East Asia and the key role of South Siberia in the colonization of Siberia. Results We report the results of a high-resolution phylogenetic analysis of 701 mtDNAs and 318 Y chromosomes from five native populations of Sakha (Yakuts, Evenks, Evens, Yukaghirs and Dolgans) and of the analysis of more than 500,000 autosomal SNPs of 758 individuals from 55 populations, including 40 previously unpublished samples from Siberia. Phylogenetically terminal clades of East Asian mtDNA haplogroups C and D and Y-chromosome haplogroups N1c, N1b and C3, constituting the core of the gene pool of the native populations from Sakha, connect Sakha and South Siberia. Analysis of autosomal SNP data confirms the genetic continuity between Sakha and South Siberia. Maternal lineages D5a2a2, C4a1c, C4a2, C5b1b and the Yakut-specific STR sub-clade of Y-chromosome haplogroup N1c can be linked to a migration of Yakut ancestors, while the paternal lineage C3c was most likely carried to Sakha by the expansion of the Tungusic people. MtDNA haplogroups Z1a1b and Z1a3, present in Yukaghirs, Evens and Dolgans, show traces of different and probably more ancient migration(s). Analysis of both haploid loci and autosomal SNP data revealed only minor genetic components shared between Sakha and the extreme Northeast Siberia. Although the major part of West Eurasian maternal and paternal lineages in Sakha could originate from recent admixture with East Europeans, mtDNA haplogroups H8, H20a and HV1a1a, as well as Y-chromosome haplogroup J, more probably reflect an ancient gene flow from West Eurasia through Central Asia and South Siberia. Conclusions Our high-resolution phylogenetic dissection of mtDNA and Y-chromosome haplogroups as well as analysis of autosomal SNP data suggests that Sakha was colonized by repeated expansions from South Siberia with minor gene flow from the Lower Amur/Southern Okhotsk region and/or Kamchatka. The minor West Eurasian component in Sakha attests to both recent and ongoing admixture with East Europeans and an ancient gene flow from West Eurasia.

    Notes: Dichroism experiments with 150 fs time resolution on anthracene in benzyl alcohol are presented as a function of viscosity from 14.4 cP (274 K) to 2.7 cP (329 K). These measurements test a qualitative prediction of the viscoelastic picture of liquid dynamics, specifically that earlier "inertial" dynamics have a viscosity independent rate, whereas later "diffusive" dynamics have a rate directly proportional to viscosity. This paper focuses on two components of the dichroism decay that are assigned to rotational motion. A third component is assigned to electronic-state solvation and is analyzed in a companion paper [J. Chem. Phys. 115, 4231 (2001)]. The longest component is due to rotational diffusion and is very well described by a hydrodynamic model with slip boundary conditions. A fast decay component in the subpicosecond region is found and shown to have a viscosity-independent rate. It is assigned to inertial rotation by comparison to the computer simulations of Jas et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 107, 8800 (1997)]. Inertial rotation extends out to at least 1 ps, longer than the range commonly assumed for inertial dynamics. Over much of this range, the inertial rotation is not free-rotor-like, but is strongly modified by interaction with the solvent. The inertial rotation also accounts for the "missing" anisotropy found when the rotational diffusion fits are extrapolated to zero time. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A wave structure observed in the solar wind on 17 December 1990, is discussed, and it is found that this structure is associated with a slow-mode magnetosonic wave. The parameters of the wave such as the direction of the wave vector, the wave frequency and the decrement of attenuation, are estimated. It is shown that the peculiarities of the plasma motion in the wave may provide conditions corresponding to an effective adiabatic index less than unity. The variations of the proton density and temperature are analyzed. It proved that for the entire period of the wave structure passing the Earth, the value of the adiabatic index was less than unity, which agrees with the model by Pudovkin et al. [J. Geophys. Res. 102, 27145 (1997); Astron. Nachr. 320, 87 (1999)]. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Parameters of the solar wind plasma and magnetic field in the magnetosheath are calculated for an anisotropic plasma model in the Chew–Goldberger–Low approximation. It is shown that in the case when the energy transfer between the perpendicular and parallel (with respect to the magnetic field) degrees of freedom is absent, the resulting temperature anisotropy may significantly affect the plasma density and magnetic field intensity profiles across the magnetosheath. However, in this case, the value of the temperature anisotropy (the ratio of the perpendicular to the parallel component of the temperature with respect to the magnetic field, T⊥/T||) becomes unrealistic high. To bring agreement between the model values of the temperature anisotropy and experimental data, the existence of an intensive proton pitch-angle diffusion is assumed. In the case when the temperature anisotropy relaxation time is much smaller than the time taken by the solar wind plasma to move from the bow shock to the magnetopause, one has T⊥/T||(approximate)1, and the profiles of the magnetic field and plasma density along the subsolar stream line insignificantly differ from the profiles obtained for the isotropic magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model. In an intermediate case when the relaxation time is of the order of the plasma transport time, the value of T⊥/T|| may amount to the values observed in the magnetosheath. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Supramembrane structures of Agrobacterium, which link cells during mating, were for the first time visualized using transmission electron microscopy. The initial cell contact was found to be mediated by long pili. Using colloidal gold-labeled, VirB1-specific antibodies, it was established that VirB1 proteins enter into the composition of short pilus-like structures, which emerge at the poles of acetosyringone (AS)-induced agrobacterial cells. Labeling of non-centrifuged agrobacterial cells on a nitrocellulose membrane using colloidal gold-conjugated antibodies to VirB1 showed that the labeled complex could bind to AS-induced cells, but failed to form red stains during incubation with cells of the Ti plasmidless A. tumefaciens strains LBA288 and UBAPF-2.
