    Notes: Summary Low-Reynolds-number results are presented for the drag and induced torque on a slender circular cylinder translating near a single plane wall. Four representative situations are investigated, the principal feature of the analysis being that it is valid for all distances from the wall which are large compared with the radius of the cylinder. In particular, the results hold for distances from the wall of the same order of magnitude as the length of the cylinder. The direction and rate of rotation are given for those cases where it occurs.

    Description: Deep-sea biology has traditionally been rather descriptive and dependent on the availability of organisms obtained by means of trawls or grabs. Only in recent years the increased use of underwater video systems and ROVs has allowed in situ studies of deep-sea organisms and communities in their environment. Here, we advocate that the study of deep-sea organisms under controlled lab conditions (monitored experimental parameters) is still essential to elucidate ecological and physiological life history adaptations of deep-sea organisms to their environment, complementing field observations. We present an infrastructure for work on living deep-sea organisms under controlled lab conditions of pressure and temperature available at the National Oceanography Centre. The IPOCAMP() (Incubateur Pressurisé pour lObservation et la Culture dAnimaux Marins Profonds), originally designed at the University Pierre et Marie Curie, allows the study of organisms under deep-sea conditions in the laboratory, including controlled conditions of temperature and pressure, in a closed seawater circulation system. The pressure vessel (size: 20x60cm) can contain several cages of limited size that contain ventilation holes and are positioned in the systems water flow. Using an endoscope system the behaviour of organisms and their physiological activity (i.e. oxygen, heart beat sensors) during the experiment can be recorded. The study of living deep-sea organisms in the lab is essential if we are to understand life history adaptations to an environment that covers two thirds of our planet, as well as the challenges to life in the deep in light of increased exploitation and climate change. It is astonishing how little technology to study living deep-sea organisms under controlled lab conditions is currently available and the technology involved needs substantial financial support for advancement. In order to mobilize the scientific capacities available, including funding to advance this emerging technology, we will increasingly need to rely upon joint international cooperation and funding support

    Description: For a viscous incompressible fluid the low Reynolds number description of the flow generated by a three-dimensional point source of oscillating strength situated on a wall is approximately quasi-steady in the neighbourhood of the singularity. This quasi-steady solution contains a number of unacceptable features, the principal one being that it is not a uniformly valid approximation within a small region surrounding the source point. In addition to this the vorticity in this region is predicted to be zero everywhere on the wall except at the singular point where it is infinite, which does not seem to be a physically reasonable distribution. When account is taken of the finite radius of the hole through which the fluid is driven and the finite width of the wall, the above difficulties are resolved yielding results that are quite realistic and informative. © 1971, Cambridge University Press.     Description: The motion of bodies through fluid at low Reynolds number is appreciably affected by the container walls. Consequently the Stokes-flow theory due to Batchelor (1970) and others for a slender body falling in an unbounded fluid is difficult to test experimentally unless it is extended to take account of nearby boundaries. Theoretical expressions are given here for certain drag coefficients of a circular cylindrical slender rod of finite length falling close to a single plane wall or falling midway between two parallel plane walls. Experiments with a very viscous liquid are described in which cylinders of small thickness-to-length ratios (ranging from 1:10 to 1:100 approximately) are made to fall in suitable orientations. From their times of fall over a measured distance experimental drag coefficients are determined and compared with the corresponding theoretical value from the extension of Batchelor's theory. For rods falling in a horizontal orientation the theoretical and experimental results are consistent within the order of accuracy of the experiments. However, when results are compared for rods falling in a vertical orientation there is a significant difference for which possible explanations are presented. © 1973, Cambridge University Press.     Description: Stokes flow is analysed for a combination body, consisting of a sphere attached to a slender body, translating along its axis in an infinite and otherwise un-disturbed fluid. The cross-section of the after-body, or tail, is circular; the radius, while not necessarily constant, is small compared with the radius of the spherical head. The tail is represented by a distribution of Stokeslets of strength per unit length F(z), located and directed along its axis. The interactive effect of head-tail attachment is manifested by the presence of image singularities located within the sphere. The image system for a single tail Stokeslet must be such that the no-slip condition is satisfied on the surface of the sphere. It is shown that this system consists of a Stokeslet, a Stokes doublet (stresslet only) and a source doublet located a t the image point. The strength F(z) is obtained by applying the no-slip condition to the combination body. The solution follows the lines of traditional slender-body theory, an expansion being performed in ascending powers of the reciprocal of the logarithm of the aspect ratio. The integral force parameters and F(z) are obtained to second order. The interactive effect is assessed, and the results are discussed in the context of a sedimenting micro-organism, such as a spermatozoon. The drag on the combination body is shown to be less by around 10% than the sum of the drags on an isolated sphere and tail. This drag, for a sperm-shaped body, is divided approximately equally between head and tail. © 1974, Cambridge University Press. All rights reserved.

    Description: Deep-sea mining may be just a few years away and yet society is struggling to assess the positive aspects, such as increasing the supply of metals for battery production to fuel the green revolution, versus the potentially large environmental impacts. Mining of polymetallic (manganese) nodules from the deep ocean is likely to be the first mineral resource targeted and will involve direct impacts to hundreds of km2 of seabed per mine per year. However, the mining activity will also cause the generation of large sediment plumes that will spread away from the mine site and have both immediate and long-term effects over much wider areas. We discuss what the impacts of plumes generated near the seabed by mining vehicles may be and how they might be measured in such challenging environments. Several different mining vehicles are under development around the world and depending on their design some may create larger plumes than others. We discuss how these vehicles could be compared so that better engineering designs could be selected and to encourage innovation in dealing with plume generation and spread. These considerations will aid the International Seabed Authority (ISA) that has the task of regulating mining activities in much of the deep sea in its commitment to promote the Best Available Technology (BAT) and Best Environmental Practice (BEP).

    Description: The establishment of thresholds is integral to environmental management. This paper introduces the use of thresholds in the context of deep-seabed mining, a nascent industry for which an exploitation regime of regulations, standards and guidelines is still in the process of being developed, and for which the roles and values of thresholds have yet to be finalised. There are several options for integrating thresholds into the International Seabed Authority's regulatory regime, from being stipulated in regulations to being part of a mining contract, each option having its own advantages and disadvantages. Here we explore the range of ways that thresholds can be derived, set out the challenges in translating ecological and management data into thresholds, highlight factors for acceptance and operationalisation of thresholds in deep-seabed mining, and explain the necessity of refining thresholds as knowledge on impacts to features improves. Some comparable marine industries already use thresholds and these could potentially be used as starting points for the development of thresholds for deep-seabed mining. In order to be acceptable to the wide range of deep-seabed mining stakeholders, thresholds need to strike a balance among levels of harm acceptable by society, levels of environmental precaution justifiable by governments, scientific robustness, and operational practicality.
