Reductive Dimerization of Cyclopropyl(1-halocyclopropyl)acetylenes. 1,1′-Bis(cyclopropyl-ethynyl)-1,1′-bicyclopropyl and Cyclopropyl[1-(1-cyclopropyl-2-cyclopropylidenevinyl)cyclo-propyl]acetyleneThe coupling of cyclopropyl(1-lithiocyclopropyl)acetylene (2) with cyclopropyl(1-halocyclopropyl)acetylenes [halogen = Cl (3). Br (4), J. (5)] and the reaction of the bromide 4 with magnesium both yield under mild conditions the isomeric hydrocarbons C16H18 (6 and 7) named in the title. The coupling reaction is influenced by the solvent and by the nature of the halogen; a copper(I) chloride catalysis is used to prepare the diyne 6 in high yields. (Cyclopropylethynyl)cyclopropyl radicals (11) are proposed as intermediates of the uncatalyzed reaction. - A „degenerated“ halogen-metal exchange equilibrium between the Li compound 2 and the corresponding iodide 5 at -78°C in THF is demonstrated with the aid of deuterated substrates (2-D and 5-D). The deuterated positions in the dimers 6 and 7 are revealed by the analysis of their partial hydrogenation products, the diolefins 19 and 22. The dilithio compound 12 is formed smoothly from the diyne 6 by dimetallation with n-butyllithium but rather sluggishly from the corresponding dibromide 15 by halogen-metal exchange. The lack of reactivity of 15 is explained by the assumption that it exists in the s-cis conformation 18.
Notes:
