    Notes: Summary Disturbances in IgA have often been reported in white epileptics on anticonvulsant therapy. The clinical significance of these disorders is of interest as this aspect does not appear to have been sufficiently explored. In a previous study neither African nor Caucasian epileptics on treatment showed a deficiency of serum IgA. Since secretory IgA is the main defence factor in protecting mucosal surfaces, the object of the present study was simultaneously to determine serum and salivary IgA in suitable subjects and to monitor related clinical events. A similar elevation of salivary IgA level was found in Black and White epileptics on treatment. Clinical events were rare and were not related either to serum or secretory IgA concentrations. It is concluded that at present epileptics do not seem to require special immunological or clinical monitoring.

    Notes: Summary Epilepsy is a common disorder and requires long-term drug treatment. Epileptics on anticonvulsant therapy have often been reported to have a depressed immune system, especially an IgA deficiency. An association with clinical manifestations has not yet been clearly explored. So far investigations have been performed in Whites only. The objectives of this study were to assess if there is a racial difference in the immune response to anticonvulsants between Blacks and Whites and to establish the clinical significance of the IgA deficiency. Our results showed normal IgA values in Black and White epileptics on anticonvulsant therapy. This implies, at least at the present stage, that patients do not require immunological monitoring or protective measurements. Further studies including the determination of secretory IgA might help to explain the discrepancy between our findings and the literature and should provide deeper insight into the correlation between potential immune disturbances and clinical implications.

    Notes: A scanning tunneling microscope with a completely digital control is described which is able to determine in addition to the sample topography the local reactance of the surface by using a mathematical procedure. The new types of information allow a more detailed discussion of surface properties. The measurements were carried out at gold films on silicon wafers. On a plasma polymer gold composite surface typical reactance differences will be demonstrated. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: 2 was examined by AFM in contact mode. On loading the polycrystalline sample the surface roughness increases and visible mesoscopic structures of about 25 μm in diameter appear. The fractal dimension df of the surface topography was analyzed and it was found that df starts to increase at the yield strength and finally ends in a plateau. Investigation of the nickel monocrystal showed the formation of well-characterized slip bands and non-regular substructures beyond a short elastic region. The development of the fractal dimension is similar to that of the polycrystalline steel sample. The results obtained are discussed in the framework of mesomechanics.

    Notes: In this paper the investigation of r.f.-sputter-deposited Ta, Ta-N and Ta-N-O thin films is presented. Using atomic force microscopy in combination with sheet resistance measurements, Auger electron spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction, the thin film properties and microstructure are examined. Two crystalline modifications of Ta (tetragonal β-Ta and bcc α-Ta) are reported. By incorporation of nitrogen and/or oxygen into the Ta films, nanocrystalline and quasi-amorphous structures can be achieved. Finally, the usefulness of the films as diffusion barriers in Cu-based metallization systems is described.© 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
