Description / Table of Contents: Summary The heat of dilution of oligomers of polymethylmethacrylate in acetone, of polyvinylcarbazole in benzene and of polycarbonate in dioxane has been measured in dilute solution. A calorimeter with thermistors as thermometer is described. The enthalpy partB H of the second osmotic virialcoefficient has been calculated from the data and its molecular weight dependence theoretically derived. The influence of the endgroups has been studied with suitable model substances.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary An equation was developed to determine the heat of vitrifaction from the heats of solution and dilution for three fractions of polystyrene. From the temperature dependence of the heat of vitrifaction Δc p may be obtained very precisely and yielded 0.090 cal/g/degree irrespective of the molecular weight. Experiments of tempering showed that the lowering of the glass temperature and the reduction of the heat of vitrifaction probably cannot be increased beyond 12.5° resp. 1 cal/g irrespective of the molecular weight. The heat of vitrifaction does not depend on the kind of solvent and is always exothermic. From this follows that a first-order transition, formerly presumed by one of us, does not exist. It is shown by means of statistical mechanics that a change in conformational energy, besides the hole forming energy, contributes to the heat of vitrifaction.

Notes: The technique of fluorescence labelling has been applied for the determination of functional groups on plasma and chromic acid-modified polymer surfaces. Various fluorescence dyes were coupled to carboxyl, carbonyl, hydroxyl and amino groups. It was found that fluorescence labelling is a very sensitive tool for quantitative determination of the surface chemical structure of polymers.

Notes: Thin polyethylene films cast on copper or gold were treated with low-pressure oxygen plasma. Changes in the chemical structure of these films were investigated by infrared spectroscopy using a reflection method in combination with chemical derivatization (CD) reactions. The potential of the CD is demonstrated for hydroxyl groups and carbonyl groups by the reaction with trifluoroacetic anhydride and hydrazine. The reaction conditions were varied to check for side reactions. The results of the derivatization are discussed in terms of secondary structures. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
