    Notes: Abstract Pressure-sensitive paint (PSP) data are generally derived by ratioing two images of a PSP-coated wind tunnel model. One image is taken at a known “wind-off” reference pressure while the other is taken at the test condition, in order to factor out the effects of nonuniform illumination and paint thickness. However, airloads on the model cause it to move during testing with respect to both the camera and the illumination source used to excite the P & P. Thus, the raw PSP images must be aligned, or registered, by means of a spatial transform. Once a proper ratioed image is obtained, image coordinates must be related to model coordinates so that pressure data can be obtained at the desired points on the model. This article compares several transforms used for image registration, and demonstrates the use of the projective equation of photogrammetry to relate model to image coordinates. An application in a small-scale wind tunnel test is shown, demonstrating mapping of pressure data to the three-dimensional model surface.

    Notes: Abstract In recent experiments we demonstrated the feasibility of using the oxygen dependence of luminescent molecules for surface pressure measurement in aerodynamic testing. This technique is based on the observation that for many luminescent molecules the light emitted increases as the oxygen partial pressure, and thus the air pressure, the molecules see decreases. In practice the surface to be observed is coated with an oxygen permeable polymer containing a luminescent molecule and illuminated with ultraviolet radiation. The airflow induced surface pressure field is seen as a luminescence intensity distribution which can be measured using quantitative video techniques. Computer processing converts the video data into a map of the surface pressure field. The experiments consisted of evaluating a trial luminescent coating in measuring the static surface pressure field over a two-dimensional NACA-0012 section model airfoil for Mach numbers ranging from 0.3 and 0.66. Comparison of the luminescent coating derived pressures were made to those obtained from conventional pressure taps. The method along with the experiment and its results will be described.

    Description: In the present context the term circulation control is used to denote a method of lift generation that utilizes tangential jet blowing over the upper surface of a rounded trailing edge airfoil to determine the location of the boundary layer separation points, thus setting an effective Kutta condition. At present little information exists on the flow structure generated by circulation control airfoils under leading edge blowing. Consequently, no theoretical methods exist to predict airfoil performance under such conditions. An experimental study of the flow field generated by a two dimensional circulation control airfoil under steady leading and trailing edge blowing was undertaken. The objective was to fundamentally understand the overall flow structure generated and its relation to airfoil performance. Flow visualization was performed to define the overall flow field structure. Measurements of the airfoil forces were also made to provide a correlation of the observed flow field structure to airfoil performance. Preliminary results are presented, specifically on the effect on the flow field structure of leading edge blowing, alone and in conjunction with trailing edge blowing.

    Description: NASA ARC has conducted flight tests of a new type of aerodynamic pressure sensor based on a luminescent surface coating. Flights were conducted at the NASA ARC-Dryden Flight Research Facility. The luminescent pressure sensor is based on a surface coating which, when illuminated with ultraviolet light, emits visible light with an intensity dependent on the local air pressure on the surface. This technique makes it possible to obtain pressure data over the entire surface of an aircraft, as opposed to conventional instrumentation, which can only make measurements at pre-selected points. The objective of the flight tests was to evaluate the effectiveness and practicality of a luminescent pressure sensor in the actual flight environment. A luminescent pressure sensor was installed on a fin, the Flight Test Fixture (FTF), that is attached to the underside of an F-104 aircraft. The response of one particular surface coating was evaluated at low supersonic Mach numbers (M = 1.0-1.6) in order to provide an initial estimate of the sensor's capabilities. This memo describes the test approach, the techniques used, and the pressure sensor's behavior under flight conditions. A direct comparison between data provided by the luminescent pressure sensor and that produced by conventional pressure instrumentation shows that the luminescent sensor can provide quantitative data under flight conditions. However, the test results also show that the sensor has a number of limitations which must be addressed if this technique is to prove useful in the flight environment.

    Description: The flow past a delta wing of aspect ratio one is examined at angles of attack ranging from 25 deg to 90 deg. On the basis of detailed observations of the flow in a water channel, using laser-induced fluorescence, four angle of attack flow regimes are identified, in addition to the well known regime of a stable pair of leading edge vortices. These are: a regime where the two leading edge vortices break down independently, primarily into the spiral form; a regime where spiral and bubble breakdowns alternate periodically on the two sides of the wing, accompanied by an antisymmetric motion in the chordwise direction of the two points of breakdown; a regime where a single streamwise vortex springing from the wing apex alternates in sign at irregular intervals; and finally, a regime dominated by a wake bubble and the relatively small scale vortices arising from the instability of its boundary.
