    Notes: Photon emission during electric-field-initiated material transfer has been measured using a scanning tunneling microscope configured for surface modification. The instrument has been integrated with a photon-counting system that measures the emission originating from the tip–sample junction under both quiescent and transient conditions. The transient photon emission recorded during nanometer-scale surface modification of gold samples is correlated with the type of feature formed on the sample surface. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: An accurate, sensitive, easily implemented method of calibration of the elastic displacement of piezoelectric transducers used in scanning tunneling microscopes has been developed. The axial displacement for both static and harmonic excitation has been measured using laser beam deflection amplified by an optical magnification system. For harmonic excitation where lock-in amplifier detection can be utilized, displacements as small as 0.03 A(ring) have been measured. Measurements on PZT-5H and PZT-8 transducers over a range of five orders of magnitude in applied voltage demonstrate the power of the method in calibration of displacements from the subangstrom to the nonlinear region with an uncertainty of about 4%.

    Notes: Nanometer-scale features have been formed in air on metallic surfaces with various tip/sample material combinations (W/Au, Au/Au, Au/Pt, and W/Pt) using a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) instrument. The instrument has sufficient stability, computer control, and in-process measurement capability to record important processing signals while creating nanoscale patterns. The sample surface can be quantitatively characterized using both tunneling spectroscopy and imaging before and after pulsing the tip-sample voltage (Vt). Images show that the form of the created features ranges from craters to mounds when Vt exceeds a threshold value, Vc, which is dependent on the tunneling resistance (R). Results of measurement of Vc vs R combined with results of the measurement of tip displacement versus Vt allow the determination of the threshold electric field (Ec). For the W tip and the Pt sample, Ec has been determined to be 0.23 V/A(ring). Electric fields of this magnitude are sufficient to remove atoms by high-field emission.

    Notes: A scanning tunneling microscope developed for microscopy, spectroscopy, and lithography has been used for modification of metallic surfaces exposed to the atmosphere. We report here the first quantitative characterization of a submicrometer area of a metallic sample before and after pulsing the tip-sample voltage using both tunneling spectroscopy determination of the apparent mean barrier potential (φ) and imaging of the area in constant tunneling current mode. The before and after images show that the form of the created features ranges from craters to mounds. The current wave form recorded during a surface modification is indicative of the form of the feature. Diminution of the contamination layer often associated with surfaces exposed to the atmosphere is inferred from the values of φ before and after modification. Analysis of the results indicates that the observed features were caused by high electric fields and not by high temperatures.

    Notes: Abstract For slow crack growth (da/dn ≈0.1 µm per load cycle) in 7075-T6 aluminum, quantitative agreement was found between the amplitude distribution of burst acoustic emissions and the area size distribution of intermetallic inclusions ≈10 (µm)2 in area as measured on thepolished fracture face. This observation permits the prediction of the amplitude distribution of acoustic emissions due to crack growth in a particular sample of 7075-T6 aluminum directly from a simple, standard metallographic observation performed on the material in question. It was also found that a reduction of the yield stress from that of 7075-T6 aluminum (503 MPa) to that of 7075-0 aluminum (103 MPa) completely eliminated burst acoustic emission activity due to crack advance in the amplitude range studied.

    Notes: Abstract The HIgh-REsolution Gamma-ray and hard X-ray Spectrometer (HIREGS) consists of an actively shielded array of twelve liquid-nitrogen-cooled germanium detectors designed to provide unprecedented spectral resolution and narrow-line sensitivity for solar gamma-ray line observations. Two long-duration, circumpolar balloon flights of HIREGS in Antarctica (10–24 January, 1992 and 31 December, 1992–10 January, 1993) provided 90.9 and 20.4 hours of solar observations, respectively. During the observations, eleven soft X-ray bursts at C levels and above (largest M1.7) occurred, and three small solar hard X-ray bursts were detected by the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory. HIREGS detected a significant increase above 30 keV in one. No solar gamma-ray line emission was detected. Limits on the 2.223-MeV line and the hard X-ray emission are used to estimate the relative contribution of protons and electrons to the energy in flares, and to coronal heating. For the 2.223-MeV line, the upper limit fluence is ≲ 0.8 ph cm-2 in the flares, and the upper limit flux is 1.8 × 10-4 ph s-1 cm-2 in the absence of flares. These limits imply that ≲ 6 × 1030 (2σ) protons above 30 MeV were accelerated in the flares, assuming standard photospheric abundances and a thick target model. The total energy contained in the accelerated protons 〉30 MeV is ≲ 4 × 1026 ergs, but this limit can be more than 1030 ergs if the spectrum extends down to ∽1 MeV. The upper limit on the total energy in accelerated electrons during the observed flares can also exceed 1030 ergs if the spectrum goes down to ∽ 7 keV. Quiet-Sun observations indicate that ≲ 1026erg s-1 are deposited by energetic protons 〉1 MeV, well below the1027 –1028 erg s-1 required for coronal heating, while 〈3 × 1027 erg s-1 are deposited by energetic electrons, which does not exclude the possibility of coronal heating by quiet-time accelerated electrons. The quiet-Sun observations also suggest that if protons stored in the corona are to supply the energy for flares, as suggested by Elliot (1964), the proton spectrum must extend down to at least ∽2 MeV. However, collisional losses at typical coronal-loop densities prevent those low-energy protons from being stored for ≳ 104 s. It therefore seems unlikely that the energy for flares could come from energetic protons stored over long periods.

    Notes: Abstract A sensitive radiotracer method was used to detect glutamine synthetase activity in fish. The distribution of glutamine synthetase activity using this method was shown to be widespread in organs and tissues of the marine finfish, snapper,Pagrus auratus. The optimum pH and temperature for glutamine synthetase activity and Km of glutamate from the brain of the snapper are also reported. Interestingly no glutamine synthetase activity was detected in lymphoid organs, indicating, that as in the mammal, the teleostean immune system is likely to rely on glutamine in circulation for energy and nucleotide synthesis. Furthermore circulating glutamine levels fell as fish became stressed or became ill. Implications of these observations on the function of the immune system of fish are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract The observed difference in plasticity in the normal and superconducting states in metals and alloys has been attributed by most authors to an electron-dislocation interaction. Granato has associated this interaction with a dislocation damping property. We suggest a different model, in which the dislocation is thermally activated over a barrier whose effective temperature is raised by dislocation kinetic energy and which cools at a rate dependent on the thermal conductivity. State differences in flow stress are then attributed to differences in conductivity. While previous models have been used to describe the temperature dependence of the flow stress difference alone, this paper describes several other aspects of the phenomenon which demonstrate the validity of our model.
