    Description: Future missions to Mars will require a communications system to link activities on the Martian surface with each other and with mission controllers on Earth. A conceptual design is presented for an aerosynchronous communications satellite to provide these links. The satellite provides the capability for voice, data/command, and video transmissions. The mission scenario assumed for the design is described, and a description of a single aerosynchronous satellite is explained. A viable spacecraft design is then presented. Communication band selection and channel allocation are discussed. The communications system conceptual design is presented along with the trades used in sizing each of the required antennas. Also, the analyses used to develop the supporting subsystem designs are described as is the communications impact on each subsystem design.

This paper documents the preliminary design of an areosynchronous communications satellite to provide such links. As designed, the satellite will provide almost continuous communication between Mars and earth, as well as continuous Mars surface-to-surface links. The capacity will exist for voice, data/command, and video transmission. The mission scenario assumed for this design is described, followed by the configuration design. The communications systems conceptual design and its impact on the overall spacecraft requirements are then presented. Supporting subsystems including electrical power; thermal control; guidance, navigation, and control; propulsion; structures; and configuration are reviewed. A description of the operating orbit and the assumed method of orbit acquisition are discussed.

    Description: The Low-Acceleration Research Facility (LARF), an unmanned free-flier that is boosted from low-earth orbit to a desired altitude using an orbital transfer vehicle is discussed. Design techniques used to minimize acceleration-causing disturbances and to create an ultra-quiet workshop are discussed, focusing on residual acceleration induced by the environment, the spacecraft and experiments. The selection and integration of critical subsystems, such as electrical power and thermal control, that enable the LARf to accomodate sub-microgravity levels for extended periods of time are presented, including a discussion of the Low-Acceleration Module, which will supply the payload with 25.0 kW of power, and up to 11.8 kW in the low-power mode. Also, the data management, communications, guidance, navigation and control, and structural features of supporting subsystems are examined.

A discussion of how governments can help with the new industry's development is offered.

Pursue potential opportunities for transferring routine, operational space functions to the commercial space sector where beneficial and cost-effective.

    Description: The Microgravity Science and Applications Division's (MSAD) program to record and analyze the Shuttle's vibration environment is reviewed. This program provides microgravity science investigators with time and frequency analyses of the acceleration environment during their experiments' operation. Information is also provided for future investigators on the expected Shuttle vibration environment. As background, the two major elements of the program are discussed, the Space Acceleration Measurement System (SAMS) and the Acceleration Characterization and Analysis Project (ACAP). A comparison of the acceleration measurements from five Shuttle missions is discussed.
