    Notes: We study in the present paper the response of a flexible macromolecular chain to the application or removal of an electric field. The polymer is mainly modeled as a Gaussian chain, and the case of freely jointed chains is also treated. We consider the dynamics of the chains, after the inception and subsequent cessation of an electric field. In particular, we calculate two properties. One of them is the time-dependent chain expansion, as measured by the components of the gyration tensor, that can be determined by transient electric-field light scattering. The other property is the transient electric birefringence, related to the reorientation of the chain segments. In this way, the dynamics of two different properties can be compared. The transient properties are analyzed in terms of a series of relaxation times. We propose the use of a mean relaxation time as a convenient representation of the rate of the dynamic process, and show that it can be deduced from simulation or experiments with more accuracy than the longest relaxation time. Our computational procedure is based on Brownian dynamics simulation. For Gaussian chains without hydrodynamic interaction, the results are compared with the predictions from the Rouse theory. We evaluate the influence of the strength of the force or field. Simulations are also carried out including hydrodynamic interactions, so that the importance of this effect can be assessed. We propose some combination of relaxation times with other macromolecular properties that take universal numerical values. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract. This paper describes the histopathological changes observed in the Mexican native cichlid Cichlasoma urophthalmus (Günther) when try with an initial weight of between 160 and 170 mg were fed with diets deficient in vitamin C for 90 days. The epidermis showed an extensive inflammatory response, with spongiosis and also degenerative changes in the basal cells. Muscle showed a range of pathological changes including inflammation, changes in the number and position of the nuclei, vacuolation and necrosis, granular degeneration, and fibre loss. Gills showed thickening of the primary lamellae, oedema, hyperplasia, telangiectasis and atrophy of the bony supporting structures. Ganglia and neurones of nervous tissue were abnormal with changes which ranged from slight inflammation to central chromatolysis. The hepalopanereas was also affected and focal necrosis of the hepatocytes was frequently observed. The pancreas showed major changes with shrinkage of the acinar cells and reduction of zymogen granule content. Fish fed diets containing 0 and 40 mg vitamin C kg-1 of diet were infected with Mycobacterium sp. and miliary tuberculosis was found affecting kidney, spleen, choroid gland, stomach, heart and muscle. The association between fish tuberculosis and vitamin C deficiency is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract. Fry of Cichlasoma urophthalmus (Günther) weighing 160-175 mg were fed for 75 days on diets containing seven different levels of calcium pantothenate. Fish fed on the three lowest inclusion levels (up to 0,10 and 20 mg/kg) exhibited a variety of external signs and high mortalities. Fish fed on the higher inclusion levels (40, 60, 80, 120 and 320 mg/kg) did not show external pathologies. At the end of the experiment there was no significant difference in these diets (P〈0.01) in final weight, individual weight gain, individual food intake, food conversion ratio, and specific growth rate. Marked interlamellar lesions were observed in gills of fish fed on the lowest inclusion level diets. The lesions ranged from oedema, hyperplasia covering all the secondary lamellae to the complete fusion of adjacent filaments. These fish also developed necrosis of the pancreas, whilst fish fed diets up to 80 mg/kg showed marked glycogen deposition in the hepatic cells. For the first time it is reported that fish deficient in pantothenic acid showed ceroid deposition in the hepatic cells and spleen. Fish fed on diets containing 80-320 mg/kg did not show external or histological changes. It is thus recommended that the diet of C. urophthalmus fry must be supplemented with at least 80 mg/kg diet to give maximum growth and to avoid gross and histologicai signs of deficiency.

    Notes: Abstract  The B low-molecular-weight (LMW) glutenin subunit composition of a collection of 88 durum wheat cultivars was analyzed. Extensive variation has been found and 18 different patterns were detected. Each cultivar exhibited 4–8 subunits, and altogether 20 subunits of different mobility were identified. The genetic control of all these subunits was determined through the analysis of nine F2 populations and one backcross. Five subunits were controlled at the Glu-A3 locus, 14 at Glu-B3 and 1 at Glu-B2. At the Glu-A3 locus each cultivar possessed from zero to three bands and eight alleles were identified. At the Glu-B3 locus each cultivar showed four or five bands and nine alleles were detected. Only one band was encoded by the Glu-B2 locus. A nomenclature for these alleles is proposed and the relationship between them and the commonly used LMW-model nomenclature is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract The stress-strain behaviour at ambient temperature has been studied for a set of commercial polyethylenes. High density polyethylenes, HDPE, and linear low density polyethylenes, LLDPE, have been considered. In the first group, the linear structure is slightly modified by random copolymerization with the α-olefins, 1-propene, 1-butene and 1-hexene, at a concentration lower than 1% molar. In the second group, the comonomers employed were 1-propene, 1-butene, 1-hexene and 1-octene at a concentration lower than 3% molar. The structural variables, the level of crystallinity, the structure and amount of the interfacial and amorphous regions, and the size of the lamellar crystallites, have been correlated with the chemical structure of the ethylene-α-olefin copolymers and with the main characteristics of the deformation, the initial modulus, the yield stress and the ultimate properties, draw ratio and strength at break. The small deformation properties, modulus and yield, depend on the branch content but do not depend on the branch type. Consequently, these parameters were found to depend on the core crystallinity. On the other hand, the draw ratio at break was found to be invariant with the co-unit content and the core crystallinity. The ultimate tensile strength decreases when the mol % branch content increases. The final properties are found to depend on molecular weight.

    Notes: Abstract The retinal innervation, cytoarchitectural, and immunohistochemical organization of the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) was studied in the domestic sheep. The SCN is a large elongated nucleus extending rostrocaudally for roughly 3 mm in the hypothalamus. The morphology is unusual in that the rostral part of the nucleus extends out of the main mass of the hypothalamus onto the dorsal aspect of the optic chiasm. Following intraocular injection of wheat-germ agglutininhorseradish peroxidase or tritiated amino acids, anterograde label is distributed throughout the SCN. Retinal innervation of the SCN is bilaterally symmetric or predominantly ipsilateral. Quantitative image analysis demonstrates that, although the amount of autoradiographic label is greatest in the ventral and central parts of the nucleus, density varies progressively between different regions. In addition to the SCN, retinal fibers are also seen in the medial preoptic area, the anterior and lateral hypothalamic areas, the dorsomedial hypothalamus, the retrochiasmatic area, and the basal telencephalon. Whereas the SCN can be identified using several techniques, complete delineation of the nucleus requires combined tract tracing, cytoarchitectural, and histochemical criteria. Compared with the surrounding hypothalamic regions, the SCN contains smaller, more densely packed neurons, and is largely devoid of myelinated fibers. Cell soma sizes are smaller in the ventral SCN than in the dorsal or lateral parts, but an obvious regional transition is lacking. Using Nissl, myelin, acetylcholinesterase, and cytochrome oxidase staining, the SCN can be clearly distinguished in the rostral and medial regions, but is less differentiated toward the caudal pole. Immunohistochemical demonstration of several neuropeptides shows that the neurochemical organization of the sheep SCN is heterogeneous, but that it lacks a distinct compartmental organization. Populations of different neuropeptide-containing cells are found throughout the nucleus, although perikarya positive for vasoactive intestinal polypeptide and fibers labeled for methionine-enkephalin are predominant ventrally; neurophysine-immunoreactive cells are more prominent in the dorsal region and toward the caudal pole. The results suggest that the intrinsic organization of the sheep SCN is characterized by gradual regional transitions between different zones.
