Notes: Engineering tests and full-field strain measurements are used to assess the accuracy of predictions made by the Binary Model, a computational tool for textile composites. The test case is a carbon fiber/SiC matrix composite, in which the reinforcement is a three-dimensional angle-interlock weave. The test composites are thin, having been designed for heat exchanger applications. The thinness leads to strong variations in local strains and strong effects of tow waviness upon macroscopic elasticity. The model performs well in predicting both local variations in strain and macroscopic elasticity. The effect of averaging local strains over variable gauge lengths is explored. Strains averaged over an appropriate gauge length have recently been proposed as the preferred measures of strain for use in local failure criteria.

Notes: Abstract— Recent observations of fatigue cracks bridged by continuous fibers in titanium alloy and titanium aluminide composites are compared to analogous observations in fiber-reinforced ceramics under monotonic loading. Three failure modes have been identified under axial loading in each case: longitudinal failure (failure parallel to the fibers) and noncatastrophic and catastrophic mode I failure (failure normal to the fibers). The criteria for transition from one failure mode to another are reviewed. Models developed previously to describe the failure of fiber-reinforced ceramics are extended to describe the mechanics of mode I fatigue crack growth. The extension is straightforward as long as the fibers do not fail in the crack wake, i.e. the failure mode is noncatastrophic mode I failure.

Notes: Abstract An investigation of scattering from surface cracks has been conducted. In particular, the change in the reflection coefficient of a Rayleigh wave incident on a surface indentation crack has been measured as the sample is stressed to fracture. The acoustic measurements have been correlated with the stable crack extension that precedes final failure. The crack extension behavior of as-indented specimens was found to differ appreciably from that of annealed specimens. Cracks in the annealed samples exhibited partial crack tip closure, but little stable extension, whereas cracks in the as-indented samples displayed both crack closure and irreversible crack growth. This behavior has been rationalized by invoking concepts based upon the residual stresses created by indentation.

Notes: Abstract Ten specimens of plagioclase feldspars (An100 to An25) have been examined by transmission electron microscopy using dark field and direct lattice imaging. The specimens are classified into two groups: (i) those that have been quenched from the melt (synthetic An100, An95, An66 and An50) and (ii) those that have been cooled relatively slowly (An94, An77, An75, An52, An32 and An26). The observed contrast is interpreted in detail using the two-beam dynamical theory of electron diffraction contrast. The fault vectors of the antiphase boundaries (APBs) observed in An100 and An77 are determined. Direct resolution of the sublattice and superlattice in specimens of intermediate composition (An75 to An25) indicates that the superlattice is not a regular array of out-of-step faults and is probably due to a simple sinusoidal distortion of the structure. Only three specimens (An100, An77 and An50) exhibited a single structural type. All the remaining specimens consisted of intergrowths of two structural types. The structural type present in any particular specimen depends upon its An-content and thermal history. The rate of transformation from any structural type to a lower-temperature structural type appears to decrease with decreasing An-content.

Notes: Abstract Partial syntectonic recrystallization has been produced in an experimentally deformed plagioclase (peristerite An4.5). The recrystallized grains are scattered through the strongly deformed matrix and appear to have developed by a nucleation and growth mechanism.

Notes: Abstract Plagioclase in the range An2-An10 in a relatively undeformed Quartz—feldspar pegmatite is compared with similar material in a strongly deformed and recrystallized shear zone. Optical and transmission electron microscope observations and chemical data are discussed in terms of established mechanisms of strain induced recrystallization. Recrystallization occurs by the formation of subgrains from recovery, and their subsequent growth by boundary migration or coalescence by rotation. It is suggested that the recrystallization and grain growth are enhanced by a small increase in the anorthite content. Peristerite formation in the recrystallized grains is associated with the migration of high angle boundaries under upper greenschist facies conditions.

Notes: Abstract Optical and transmission electron microscopy have been used to study the microstructures in a series of plagioclase feldspars which had been experimentally deformed in compression. The observations show that deformation takes place by three mechanisms: (1) brittle fracture, (2) twinning and (3) slip due to the generation and motion of dislocations. Optical “deformation lamellae” are shown to be due to bunches of microfractures and to walls of tangled dislocations. Twins and fractures are often intimately associated and dislocations are often generated at fracture steps or voids. Moving dislocations apparently always generate a strip of fault in the slip plane. This, together with structural considerations as well as the visibility of dislocations (under various diffracting conditions) and the orientation of the applied stress, has made it possible to determine the slip systems which have operated in the deformed specimens.
