    Notes: A model for the pulsatile release of luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (LHRH) can be reduced to a FitzHugh–Nagumo model subject to regular and quasiregular (i.e., with slight random variation in the interstimulus interval), discrete-time stimulation. The relationship of output pulse frequency (OPF) to stimulus frequency is compared between the excitable and oscillatory forms of the model and discussed in the context of results from other pulse-driven model systems. Some examples of the changes in OPF caused by quasiregular and purely Poissonian stimuli are given for the excitable case. The unstimulated system frequently interacts with the stimulation in such a complex manner that the OPF bears little resemblance to the frequency of stimulation or of the unstimulated system. Furthermore, the inability of the oscillatory form of the model to allow complete suppression of output pulses for moderate stimulation frequencies suggests that the LHRH system can be more appropriately described by the excitable form of the model. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract A method is described for determining rapid changes in gaseous exchange between a subject and the environment, while living in a whole body opencircuit calorimeter. The formulae which must be applied to standard estimates of oxygen consumption are derived the computation of rates of change of gas concentration is discussed the sensitivity of estimated heat production to errors in gas concentration is determined and heat production shown to be largely independent of CO2 measurements; and examples of veritication of the method for known rates of gas injection, and of its use with human subjects, are given. The method is of particular value in assessing the rapid changes in metabolic rate which occur as a result of changes in activity, nutritional state, environmental temperature and the administration of drugs. Such changes are monitored in an unrestrained subject living in a whole-body calorimeter rather than in a subject living with the restrictions imposed by a face-mask or ventilated hood.

    Description: A program is reported for evaluating remote sensing as an aid to geologic mapping for the past four years. Data tested in this evaluation include color and color infrared photography, multiband photography, low sun-angle photography, thermal infrared scanner imagery, and side-looking airborne radar. The relative utility of color and color infrared photography was tested as it was used to refine geologic maps in previously mapped areas, as field photos while mapping in the field, and in making photogeologic maps prior to field mapping. The latter technique served as a test of the maximum utility of the photography. In this application the photography was used successfully to locate 75% of all faults in a portion of the geologically complex Bonanza volcanic center and to map and correctly identify 93% of all Quaternary deposits and 62% of all areas of Tertiary volcanic outcrop in the area.

    Description: Impending development of Wyoming's vast fuel resources requires a quick and efficient method of land use inventory and evaluation. Preliminary evaluations of ERTS-1 imagery have shown that physiographic and land use inventory maps can be compiled by using a combination of visual and automated interpretation techniques. Test studies in the Powder River Basin showed that ERTS image interpretations can provide much of the needed physiographic and land use information. Water impoundments as small as one acre were detected and water bodies larger than five acres could be mapped and their acreage estimated. Flood plains and irrigated lands were successfully mapped, and some individual crops were identified and mapped. Coniferous and deciduous trees were mapped separately using color additive analysis on the ERTS multispectral imagery. Gross soil distinctions were made with the ERTS imagery, and were found to be closely related to the bedrock geology. Several broad unstable areas were identified. These were related to specific geologic and slope conditions and generally extended through large regions. Some new oil fields and all large open-cut coal mines were mapped. The most difficult task accomplished was that of mapping urban areas. Work in the urban areas provides a striking example of snow enhancement and the detail available from a snow enhanced image.

    Description: The author has identified the following significant results. A field photometer system has been developed which allows faster and easier measurement of object reflectances. Preliminary tests indicate that the new system will be slightly accurate than the previous filter wheel system, in addition to being easier to operate, more rugged, more compact, and less expensive.

    Description: The author has identified the following significant results. Possible geologic structures in the basin sediments of Carbon County and vicinity were located by interpretation of ERTS-1 imagery. These same structures are not evident on existing conventional geologic maps of the area. Subsequent field checks confirmed much of the geologic interpretation, but revealed that two apparent closed structures identified on the ERTS-1 imagery were actually topographic pseudostructures in flat or homoclinal sediments. Stereoscopic coverage (where available) allows the interpreter to avoid such misinterpretations.
