    Notes: Species of the genus Drosophila exhibit enormous variation in all of their reproductive behaviors: resource use and specialization, courtship signaling, sperm utilization, and female remating. The genetic bases of this variability and its evolution are poorly understood. At the same time, Drosophila comparative genomics now has developed to a point at which approaches previously only possible with D. melanogaster can be exploited to address these questions. We have taken advantage of the known phylogenetic relationships of this group of flies not only to place these behaviors in an evolutionary framework, but to provide a roadmap for future genetic studies.

    Notes: Abstract Determinants of male courtship success in Drosophila melanogasterwere examined in groups of five males sequentially presented with five individual females. Thirty-three percent of males never mated, while approximately half of the males mated two or three times. Rapid courtship initiation was associated with male success in early matings only. Male size was important for courtship outcome, but the size distributions of mating and nonmating males and their progeny numbers indicate balancing rather than directional selection on size- dependent courtship success.

    Notes: Abstract Developmental instability, detectable in morphological and meristic characters, is typically associated with reduced fitness. The actual mechanism by which fitness is reduced in these cases is difficult to identify. We propose that developmental instability also manifests itself at the behavioral level and that when this occurs, behavioral phenodeviance is the result. According to this model, abnormal or phenodeviant behavior compromises fitness. Examples are provided fromDrosophila and man.

    Notes: Abstract Two strains ofDrosophila melanogaster, one outbred, recently derived from nature, and the other created by intensive directional selection on phototactic behavior for 19 years, were used to test the hypothesis that developmental stability is influenced by parental age. Three characters were examined: sternopleural bristle number, wing length, and wing area. The results do not support any relationship between parental age, either young or old, and developmental stability in offspring.

    Notes: Abstract In female choice experiments,Drosophila melanogaster males from a selected photonegative strain show a highly significant mating advantage over males from a photopositive strain. While photonegative behavior is sex linked in this species, the X chromosome is not involved in the mating advantage seen for this strain. The degree of the photonegative male advantage changes when tests are conducted with females mutant for olfaction and auditory perception but not when females are blind.

    Notes: Abstract Pupation heights of various natural and laboratory populations ofDrosophila melanogaster, D. simulans, andD. pseudoobscura were observed in the laboratory under conditions of continuous darkness or continuous light. Generally higher mean pupation heights were observed under conditions of darkness.D. melanogaster tended to pupate higher than theD. pseudoobscura populations, andD. pseudoobscura tended to pupate higher thanD. simulans. The order of these species differences was similar whether pupation was measured in light or in darkness. Results of selection for pupation height inD. melanogaster suggest the presence of genetic variation for this character. The possibility that a relationship exists between adult and larval behaviors was explored by measuring the pupation heights of larvae from strains selected for geotactic behavior as adults, and also by measuring geotaxis of adults from strains selected for pupation height.

    Notes: Abstract Artificial selection has produced populations ofDrosophila melanogaster which show either positive or negative phototactic behavior. Selection was carried out in the presence of various marked multiple inversions used to suppress genetic recombination. Reciprocal hybridizations between photopositive and photonegative populations of flies have revealed the X chromosome ofD. melanogaster to be important in phototactic behavior regardless of conditions which restricted genetic recombination during selection.
