Notes: Abstract Phodobacter capsulatus (formerly Rhodopseudomonas capsulata) strain B10 was found to contain a single plasmid of molecular weight 86×106. Strains lacking this plasmids were isolated by various methods from strains containing the mutant R plasmid, pTH10. With the exception of two strains, which were found to contain chromosomal insertions of R plasmid DNA, strains lacking the endogenous plasmid appeared to be unaffected in any of the following metabolic or genetic functions: photosynthetic, autotrophic, diazotrophic, and dark, anaerobic growth; the production of bacteriocin; homologous recombination; the restriction of foreign DNA; and the production of gene transfer agent. DNA-DNA hybridization experiments confirmed that the plasmid had been eliminated from these strains and not become integrated into the chromose. However, sequences homologous to those of the endogenous plasmid were found to be present in the chromosome of R. capsulatus B10. This suggests, among other possibilities, that the endogenous plasmid may have originated in the chromosome, and might serve to duplicate certain chromosomal functions.

Notes: Abstract Following a single-dose, open-label, pilot pharmacokinetic study in six subjects, the systemic pharmacokinetics and metabolic effects of dorzolamide after topical ocular administration were investigated in a double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled study in 12 healthy volunteers. The subjects received a controlled diet on the 5 days before treatment initiation and throughout the study. For 14 days, a bilateral q.i.d. regimen of 3% dorzolamide, consisting of approximately 7.7 μg per day (21.3 μmol) dorzolamide hydrochloride, or placebo was given. Blood and urine electrolytes and acid-base profiles were measured 1 day prior to treatment and on days 1, 7 and 14 of treatment, and 24-h urine samples were collected daily. Topically applied dorzolamide was slowly taken up in erythrocytes and eliminated with a half life of approximately 120 days. Compared to the pre-study values, no significant treatment effect was observed in either the daily profiles or the 14-day cumulative sodium, potassium and citrate excretions. Two other volunteers given acetazolamide (125 mg q.i.d.) and assessed with the identical set of observations demonstrated marked metabolic changes. In spite of the prolonged and marked inhibition of carbonic anhydrase in red blood cells by dorzolamide, clinically significant metabolic and renal effects were not observed. The ocular tolerability profile was acceptable to all subjects.

Notes: The so-called width law for Liesegang patterns, which states that the positions xn and widths wn of bands verify the relation xn∼wnα for some α〉0, is investigated both experimentally and theoretically. We provide experimental data exhibiting good evidence for values of α close to 1. The value α=1 is supported by theoretical arguments based on a generic model of reaction diffusion. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A classical (Y Sm Lu Ca)3 (Fe Ge)5 O12 bubble garnet, supporting 1.8-μm bubbles, has been implanted with 1.5×1016 D+2 cm2 at 60 keV either directly or through a predeposited 100-A(ring)-thick silica layer. Nuclear techniques such as D (3He, α) p nuclear reaction and Rutherford backscattering combined with channeling measurements were used to determine the implant and damage profiles, respectively. Double-crystal x-ray diffraction was used to measure the maximum strain and magnetic properties were obtained from ferromagnetic resonance. The evolution of these parameters has been studied as a function of annealing treatments. It follows that, as compared to hydrogen, deuterium also interacts at damage-level inducing within the garnet new magnetic phenomena. A higher annealing temperature is required for bubble memory applications. The silica overlayer which is useful for increasing the anisotropy field change, somewhat affects the magnetic properties of the implanted layer.

Notes: Abstract: We investigate random walks on a lattice with imperfect traps. In one dimension, we perturbatively compute the survival probability by reducing the problem to a particle diffusing on a closed ring containing just one single trap. Numerical simulations reveal this solution, which is exact in the limit of perfect traps, to be remarkably robust with respect to a significant lowering of the trapping probability. We demonstrate that for randomly distributed traps, the long-time asymptotics of our result recovers the known stretched exponential decay. We also study an anisotropic three-dimensional version of our model. We discuss possible applications of some of our findings to the decay of excitons in semiconducting organic polymer materials, and emphasize the crucial influence of the spatial trap distribution on the kinetics.

Notes: Abstract: We discuss, at the mean-field level, the asymptotic shape of the reaction fronts in the general nA + mB → Creaction-diffusion processes with initially separated reactants, thereby generalizing to arbitrary reaction-order kinetics the work done by Gálfi and Rácz for the case n = m =1. The obtained information allows us to calculate the asymptotic density of Cparticles deposited by the moving reaction front, a quantity that plays an important role in the theories of Liesegang patterns formation.

Notes: Abstract. We use a two-component model to describe the production mechanism of $D$ mesons in $\pi p$ collisions. The model combines the usual QCD processes plus fragmentation and recombination of charm that has been produced by nonperturbative QCD mechanisms. A hard charm component in the pion must be responsible of the particle anti-particle production asymmetries observed.

Notes: Abstract. We present an analysis of the longitudinal $\bar{\Lambda}_0$ polarization in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. The polarization of $\bar{\Lambda}_0$ ’s coming from the decay chain $\bar{\Xi}\rightarrow \bar{\Lambda}_0 + \pi$ exhibits a very well differentiated behavior depending on the production region of the primordial $\bar{\Xi}$ ’s. This effect reflects the different values of the $N_{\bar{\Xi}}/N_{\bar{\Lambda}_0}$ ratio in the QGP region, where nucleon-nucleon interactions take place in a hot and dense environment, and the peripherical region, in which ordinary nucleon-nucleon interactions occur. An increase in the longitudinal $\bar{\Lambda}_0$ polarization signals a strangeness enhancement which is thought of as a property of the QGP phase.
