    Notes: Normandale Creek (2531m2) provides spawning and nursery grounds for lake-run rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri Richardson, brown trout, Salmo frutta L., and coho salmon, Oncorhynchus kisutch (Walbaum). Upstream movements are significantly correlated with peak stream discharge (P 〈 0.05). In 1973–1974, 59 adult salmonids constructed 86 nests of which 60% were disturbed by re-use or sand deposition. From a calculated deposition of 90 400 ova, 483 juveniles, 6 cm in fork length (f.l.), were resident in the stream when estimates by electrofishing first became valid. Estimated within-stream (i.e. all sections combined) monthly densities of wild juveniles 〉6 cm f.l. ranged from six to 22 fish (100 m2)−1, and biomass from 1.3 to 3.1 gm−2. The highest within-section biomass was 8.3 gm−2 in November. Additions of hatchery-reared rainbow trout temporarily increased monthly within-stream juvenile density up to 23 fish (100 m2)−1, and biomass to 8.2 g m−2. Density and biomass were positively correlated (P 〈 0.05) with both instream and bank cover, and biomass negatively correlated (P 〈 0.05) with gradient. The importance of substratum and flow characteristics on juvenile density and biomass was strongly indicated although not statistically significant. Annual within-section production of juveniles 〉 6 cm f.l. ranged from 4.79 to 5.93 g m−2 year−1 in Sections III and IV, respectively. Inclusion of calculated probable numbers of fish 〈 6 cm f.l. increased within-section production from 5.93 to 18.65 g m−2 year−l in upstream Section IV.

    Notes: The study of the emerald shiner Notropis atherinoides Rafinesque was conducted in 1967 and 1968 in Lake Simcoe, a eutrophic inland lake with an area of 725 km2 situated in the Province of Ontario, Canada. On the basis of meristic characters, the emerald shiner of Lake Simcoe conforms to the classical description of the species and is not distinct from the form inhabiting the Great Lakes. Annulus formation occurred in early June on age I fish but second and third annuli were not formed on older fish until late July through August.Young-of-the-year emerald shiners reached a total length of 45 mm by October; age I were 81 mm and age II measured 92 mm by the same month. By September, age I female emerald shiners attained a size superiority of 5 mm over males of that age group and by the end of the third summer age II females exceeded age II males by 8 mm. Spawning occurred offshore in the latter part of July when surface water temperatures approximated 20°C. Of the three age groups, age II specimens were the most prevalent on the spawning grounds. Average absolute fecundity was 3410 eggs in fish of all age classes combined. Differences in water temperature seem to strongly influence the seasonal distribution pattern of the emerald shiner. The final temperature preferendum of the species, as determined in a vertical temperature gradient tank, was 25°C. The emerald shiner is extensively utilized as a bait fish by anglers and appears to be an important forage fish. The plasticity of the species to adapt to a variety of ecological conditions and the species potential for high production favour its introduction to waters requiring a good converter in the food chain.

Based on a pooled sample of 367 specimens of juvenile Atlanlic salmon, Salmo salar L., from eight geographically distinct home rivers, stocks from Scotland and Newfoundland can be distinguished by meristic and morphometric character sets using discriminant analysis procedures. Reduced character sets require meristic counts of pectoral fin rays, dorsal fin rays, gill rakers and vertebrae, and morphometric measurements of standard length, pectoral and pelvic fin lengths, body depth and gape width. Regional differences based on these morphometric and meristic sets are substantiated by monomorphism at each MDH locus in Scottish fish in contrast to polymorphism at the MDH-1 and MDH-3 loci in Newfoundland fish. Only the morphometric discriminant function is highly accurate (〉80%) in identifying home river origins of the fish examined with the discriminating power increasing with increased fish size.These findings for juvenile fish indicate that, while meristic, morphometric and electrophoretic criteria provide a likely means for distinguishing regional fish stocks, morphometric character sets would seem to offer the best possibility for identifying home river origins of adult Atlantic salmon in mixed fisheries.

    Notes: Abstract Variations in meristic characters occur within and between samples of milkfish Chanos chanos (Forsskal) collected on June 1977 from five localities in Philippine waters. The unbranched anal and ventral fin rays are the most plastic, and vertebral number is the most stable of nine meristic characters examined. The number of ventral fin rays is the only meristic feature which differed consistently enough to suggest distinct population groups: South China Sea, comprising samples from Ilocos and Panay Island; Pacific Ocean from Bicol; and Celebes Sea, from Zamboanga and Davao. A discriminant analysis which incorporated generalized distance (Mahanalobis D2) and percent overlap of a reduced set of characters indicated several morphometric subgroups of milkfish in Philippine waters, although geographic subgroups were not clearly demonstrated.

    Notes: Abstract This paper reports on a comprehensive examination of metal levels at various trophic levels within an undisturbed Precambrian shield lake ecosystem. Concentrations of 21 naturally occurring elements (Hg, Cu, Al, Ba, S, Ni, Cd, Ca, Be, Zn, P, Pb, Mg, Sr, Fe, V, Mo, Mn, Ti, B, Cc) were measured in sediments, clams, fish, birds and mammals. Mercury was the only element to exhibit biomagnification in both aquatic and terrestial food chains. The levels of several metals were elevated in fish-eating birds relative to concentrations observed in the fish. Mercury was the only metal which accumulated in muscle tissue with increased age and size of all fish species tested. The concentrations of a few other metals were correlated to fish length, but these relationships were not consistent between species.
