Notes: The technique of time-differential perturbed angular distributions (TDPAD) was used to investigate the structure of graphite samples intercalated by AsF5 vapor. Following population of the 198 keV state (τ=125 ns, Q=0.072b) of 19F by the 19F(p, p'γ) reaction, measurements of the γ-ray angular distribution were performed to give information on quadrupole interactions. Theoretical fits reveal the presence of two static electric field gradient (efg) interactions, the principal one corresponding to the formation of CF bonds, with quadrupole frequency νQ=57.4±0.8MH z. Although information on graphite intercalation chemistry was not forthcoming from the measurements, it is shown that the strong texture exhibited in the perturbation spectra can be explained in terms of the angular dependence of the efg, suggesting a novel method for the characterization of graphite intercalation compounds.

Notes: Nuclear quadrupole interaction parameters have been determined at 293 and 77 K at the site of 181Ta nuclei in anhydrous HfCl4 by the method of time-differential perturbed angular correlations. Measurements performed on the 133–482 keV γ–γ cascade in 181Ta following the β decay of 181Hf indicate that HfCl4 does not possess cubic symmetry as claimed by some researchers.

Notes: Abstract Carbon fibres were coated with layers of silicon carbide (SiC) and boron nitride (BN) by conventional chemical vapour deposition. The SiC films were deposited by thermal decomposition of methyltrichlorosilane, whereas the BN films were deposited using the stepwise disproportion reaction of boron chloride with ammonia. Samples for electron microscopic investigations were prepared by separating film from fibre or by conventional mechanical thinning and subsequent ion milling of cross sections of coated fibres. Bright- and dark-field images of both planar and cross-sectional electron microscopic investigations on the fibre coatings gave detailed information on film thickness and morphology. High-resolution images improved the structural information of electron diffraction patterns. Crystal dimensions in the SiC film vary between 10 and 40 nm. Electron diffraction revealed the crystal structure to be a mixture of disordered hexagonal 2H-SiC and cubic β-SiC. High-resolution images showed the (1 1 1)-planes to be preferred for deposition. In BN films, a hexagonal turbostratic structure similar to turbostratic carbon was observed. Apart from amorphous regions, nanocrystalline parts were detected, which have a higher structural perfection in the stacking sequence of their (0 0 2)-planes compared to the (0 0 2)-planes of the turbostratic carbon fibre. High-resolution images located the film-fibre interface that was confirmed by electron energy loss spectroscopy.

    Notes: Abstract A highly crystalline form of lithium intercalated MoS2 was investigated by performing TDPAC measurements on the 740 — (44) 141 keV γ−γ cascade in99Tc. Analysis of the data reveals the presence of two static efg interactions with the following parameters: $$\begin{array}{*{20}c} {\begin{array}{*{20}c} {v_q = 114(3) MHz,} & {\eta _1 = 0.57(5),} & {\delta _1 = 0.48(5);} \\\end{array}} \\ {\begin{array}{*{20}c} {v_{q2} = 645(19) MHz,} & {\eta = 0.45(5),} & {\delta _2 = 0.11(2).} \\\end{array}} \\\end{array}$$

Notes: Abstract Measurements of the electric field gradient (efg) at F impurity sites in crystalline silicon and highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) have been compared with cluster model calculations using both Hartree-Fock (HF) and density functional theory (DFT) formalisms. The technique of time-differential perturbed angular distributions of γ-ravs was employed to derive the efg parameters following implantation of19F via the19F(p, p′)19F* reaction. For the case of HOPG the DFT method gave closer agreement with the experimental values of ¦V zz¦=3.24(14)×1022V/m2 andη=0.16(3), yieldingV zz=−3.09×1022V/m2andη=0.13 for19F at a site between the layers with point group symmetry C2h and inter-layer spacingd=3.70 Å. For19F implantation in silicon three sites were found corresponding to quadrupole frequencies 23.2(3) MHz, 35.2(3) MHz and 37.1(5) MHz. Both HF and DFT calculations are consistent with the assignment of interstitial antibonding and bond centre sites for the 23.2 and 35.2 MHz, respectively. In the former case, the F atom is located 1.81 Å along a 〈111〉 direction from a silicon atom; in the latter situation the Si-Si bond length is found to expand by 1.02 Å from its normal lattice value. It is speculated that the third interaction, which occurs at only the 10% level, possibly arises from sites associated with a defect or other impurity. To achieve a reduction in cluster size, the completion of dangling bonds with atoms other than hydrogen was investigated. The results were found to be comparable.

Notes: Abstract The electrochemical intercalation of Li+ into hafnium-doped TiS2 was studied using time-differential perturbed angular correlations (TDPAC). The181Ta nuclear quadrupole interaction was monitored as a function of the charge transfer,n F. For low uptakes, 0≤n F≤0.03, a two-phase region was found with an empty host interaction, characterized byV q=458(4) MHz, η=0.19(3) and δ-0.083(5), and a second interaction corresponding to lithiated material withv q=597(5) MHz, η=0.13(4) and δ=0.061(5). No evidence was found for intermediate phases.
