    Description: African primates are naturally infected with over 40 different simian immunodeficiency viruses (SIVs), two of which have crossed the species barrier and generated human immunodeficiency virus types 1 and 2 (HIV-1 and HIV-2). Unlike the human viruses, however, SIVs do not generally cause acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in their natural hosts. Here we show that SIVcpz, the immediate precursor of HIV-1, is pathogenic in free-ranging chimpanzees. By following 94 members of two habituated chimpanzee communities in Gombe National Park, Tanzania, for over 9 years, we found a 10- to 16-fold higher age-corrected death hazard for SIVcpz-infected (n = 17) compared to uninfected (n = 77) chimpanzees. We also found that SIVcpz-infected females were less likely to give birth and had a higher infant mortality rate than uninfected females. Immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization of post-mortem spleen and lymph node samples from three infected and two uninfected chimpanzees revealed significant CD4(+) T-cell depletion in all infected individuals, with evidence of high viral replication and extensive follicular dendritic cell virus trapping in one of them. One female, who died within 3 years of acquiring SIVcpz, had histopathological findings consistent with end-stage AIDS. These results indicate that SIVcpz, like HIV-1, is associated with progressive CD4(+) T-cell loss, lymphatic tissue destruction and premature death.     Description: Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine or 5-HT) is thought to regulate neurodevelopmental processes through maternal-fetal interactions that have long-term mental health implications. It is thought that beyond fetal 5-HT neurons there are significant maternal contributions to fetal 5-HT during pregnancy but this has not been tested empirically. To examine putative central and peripheral sources of embryonic brain 5-HT, we used Pet1(-/-) (also called Fev) mice in which most dorsal raphe neurons lack 5-HT. We detected previously unknown differences in accumulation of 5-HT between the forebrain and hindbrain during early and late fetal stages, through an exogenous source of 5-HT which is not of maternal origin. Using additional genetic strategies, a new technology for studying placental biology ex vivo and direct manipulation of placental neosynthesis, we investigated the nature of this exogenous source. We uncovered a placental 5-HT synthetic pathway from a maternal tryptophan precursor in both mice and humans.     Description: Most great ape genetic variation remains uncharacterized; however, its study is critical for understanding population history, recombination, selection and susceptibility to disease. Here we sequence to high coverage a total of 79 wild- and captive-born individuals representing all six great ape species and seven subspecies and report 88.8 million single nucleotide polymorphisms. Our analysis provides support for genetically distinct populations within each species, signals of gene flow, and the split of common chimpanzees into two distinct groups: Nigeria-Cameroon/western and central/eastern populations. We find extensive inbreeding in almost all wild populations, with eastern gorillas being the most extreme. Inferred effective population sizes have varied radically over time in different lineages and this appears to have a profound effect on the genetic diversity at, or close to, genes in almost all species. We discover and assign 1,982 loss-of-function variants throughout the human and great ape lineages, determining that the rate of gene loss has not been different in the human branch compared to other internal branches in the great ape phylogeny.     Description: Observations of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) and bonobos (Pan paniscus) provide valuable comparative data for understanding the significance of conspecific killing. Two kinds of hypothesis have been proposed. Lethal violence is sometimes concluded to be the result of adaptive strategies, such that killers ultimately gain fitness benefits by increasing their access to resources such as food or mates. Alternatively, it could be a non-adaptive result of human impacts, such as habitat change or food provisioning. To discriminate between these hypotheses we compiled information from 18 chimpanzee communities and 4 bonobo communities studied over five decades. Our data include 152 killings (n = 58 observed, 41 inferred, and 53 suspected killings) by chimpanzees in 15 communities and one suspected killing by bonobos. We found that males were the most frequent attackers (92% of participants) and victims (73%); most killings (66%) involved intercommunity attacks; and attackers greatly outnumbered their victims (median 8:1 ratio). Variation in killing rates was unrelated to measures of human impacts.     Description: The Bamenda Mountain (with over 250,000 inhabitants) is one of the strato-volcanoes along the Cameroon Volcanic Line (CVL) with an accidental landscape. This area is frequently affected by landslides, which most at times result in destruction of property and loss of lives. An informative value statistical method using GIS is use to prepared a landslide susceptibility map for the Bamenda Mountain area as well as a quantitative and qualitative risk assessment. This is aimed at revealing areas where future landslide would occur and potential loss. Nine landslide controlling factors including; slope, slope orientation (aspect), curvature, stream density, proximity to roads, geomorphology, proximity to streams, geology and land use were use in the model. A total of 64 slides were inventoried in the area and use to prepare the landslide density map. The weighted informative values for the combined factor and landslide density were used to prepare the landslide susceptibility map for the area. The most significant landslide causing factors in this area are; slope, stream density and slope aspect. The susceptibility map was classified into very high (17.8%), high (25.9%), moderate (33.6%) and low (22.7%). The validated model using the success rate curve indicates that the area under curve is 0.823 and predicts landslides at 82.3% in relatively high classes. Landslide risk assessment in the area indicates 406 buildings, 2,436 people, 1,291.1km of roads, 2152 ha of farmland and an approximate USD83,540,000 worth in assets are expose to high and very high risk. This approach can be implemented in other areas along the CVL to map and assess landslide risk.

    Notes: The effects of structural and oxygen site defects on the ferromagnetic phase transition and magnetotransport in doped lanthanum manganite films have been examined. Oxygen defects were introduced through a vacuum annealing process while structural defects were introduced using ion irradiation. The introduction of both defect types strongly suppressed the Curie temperature Tc while increasing the peak resistivity, activation energy, and magnetoresistance ratio. For defect types leading to similar reductions in Tc, structural defects lead to a broader transition regime and a smaller MRR than are found for oxygen defects. Well above Tc both defect types lead to nearly identical resistivity curves. Structural defects are argued to primarily affect the carrier mobility, hence these data provide a clue that the carrier mobility is dominating the transport properties in this regime.

    Notes: The thermoelectric properties (resistivity and thermopower) of single crystals of the low dimensional pentatelluride materials, HfTe5 and ZrTe5, have been measured as a function of temperature from 10 K〈T〈320 K. The effect of small amounts of Ti substitutional doping (M1−xTixTe5, where M=Hf, Zr) on the thermoelectric properties is reported here. A resistive transition occurs in the pentatellurides, as evidenced by a peak in the resistivity, TP(approximate)80 K for HfTe5 and TP(approximate)145 K for ZrTe5. Both parent materials exhibit a large positive (p-type) thermopower near room temperature which undergoes a change to negative (n-type) below the peak temperature. The thermal conductivity is relatively low ((approximate)5 W/m K) for the MTe5 materials. The Ti substitution affects the electronic properties strongly, producing a substantial shift in the peak temperature while the large values of thermopower remain essentially unaffected. These results warrant further investigation of these materials as candidates for low temperature thermoelectric applications. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.
