    Description: We report on the dimensional crossover of electron weak localization in ZnO/TiO x stacked layers having well-defined and spatially-localized Ti dopant profiles along film thickness. These films were grown by in situ incorporation of sub-monolayer TiO x on the growing ZnO film surface and subsequent overgrowth of thin conducting ZnO spacer layer using atomic layer deposition. Film thickness was varied in the range of ∼6–65 nm by vertically stacking different numbers (n = 1–7) of ZnO/TiO x layers of nearly identical dopant-profiles. The evolution of zero-field sheet resistance (R ◻ ) versus temperature with decreasing film thickness showed a metal to insulator transition. On the metallic side of the metal-insulator transition, R ◻ (T) and magnetoresistance data were found to be well corroborated with the theoretical framework of electron weak localization in the diffusive transport regime. The temperature dependence of both R ◻ and inelastic scattering length provided strong evidence for a smooth crossover from 2D to 3D weak localization behaviour. Results of this study provide deeper insight into the electron transport in low-dimensional n-type ZnO/TiO x stacked layers which have potential applications in the field of transparent oxide electronics.

    Description: The hydrological budget of the three major Asian rivers, namely the Indus, the Ganga and the Brahmaputra, is controlled by the Indian monsoon and Westerlies but their contribution in these basins are highly variable. Widely varying average annual precipitation has been reported within these basins. A poor network of in situ rain gauges, particularly in mountainous regions, inaccessible terrain, high variations in altitude and the significantly large size of basins forces adaption of satellite-based average annual precipitation. We investigate precipitation patterns for these three basins by using satellite-based Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM-3B42) data and compare and validate it with Asian Precipitation Highly Resolved Data Integration Towards Evaluation (APHRODITE) and India Meteorological Department (IMD) interpolated gridded precipitation data. The entire basins as well as basinal areas within the geographic limits of India have been considered. Our study shows that the precipitation broadly follows an east–west and north–south gradient control. The easternmost Brahmaputra Basin has the highest amount of precipitation followed by the Ganga Basin, and the westernmost Indus Basin has the least precipitation; precipitation is highest on the higher elevations than compared to lower elevations of the basins. A seasonal- and elevation-based approach is adapted to estimate snow precipitation and is discussed in terms of overall precipitation.

    Description: Hydrothermally altered country rocks surrounding hydrothermal ore deposits are commonly characterized by altered 18 O and 13 C values relative to distal, unaltered rocks. Stable isotopes have been recognized as a powerful tool to complement traditional geochemical and geophysical approaches during mineral exploration, particularly in carbonate replacement and Carlin-type deposits. However, wall-rock alteration and carbonate veining during ore formation is often accompanied by the precipitation of sulfide minerals, complicating stable isotope analysis. The classic phosphoric acid extraction technique for carbonate minerals results in the release of additional H 2 S gas, interfering with isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS), and laser absorption spectrometry (LAS) analysis of CO 2 . Here we present the first results from a novel off-axis integrated cavity output spectrometer (OA-ICOS) instrument, capable of determining the stable isotope composition ( 13 C, 18 O) of mixed CO 2 -H 2 S gas evolved from carbonate-sulfide mixtures. Instrument calibration was performed by analyzing in-house and commercially available CaCO 3 stable isotope reference materials. Analyses of mixed CO 2 -H 2 S tank gas and sulfide-spiked stable isotope reference materials containing up to 40 wt % chalcopyrite and sphalerite demonstrate that the method outlined here is capable of effectively analyzing previously problematic high sulfide samples. The analytical capabilities, together with the robust nature of the OA-ICOS instrument, may be of direct practical use for mineral exploration in carbonate-hosted hydrothermal systems including ore deposits.

    Description: The thermodynamic response of liquid nitrogen has been studied extensively, in part, due to the long-standing interest in the high pressure and high temperature dissociation of shocked molecular nitrogen. Previous equation of state (EOS) developments regarding shocked liquid nitrogen have focused mainly on the use of intermolecular pair potentials in atomistic calculations. Here, we present EOS developments for liquid nitrogen, incorporating analytical models, for use in continuum calculations of the shock compression response. The analytical models, together with available Hugoniot data, were used to extrapolate a low pressure reference EOS for molecular nitrogen [R. Span et al. , J. Phys. Chem. Ref. Data 29 , 1361 (2000)] to high pressures and high temperatures. Using the EOS presented here, the calculated pressures and temperatures for single shock, double shock, and multiple shock compression of liquid nitrogen provide a good match to the measured results over a broad range of P - T space. These calculations provide the first comparison of EOS developments with recently measured P - T states under multiple shock compression. The present EOS developments are general and are expected to be useful for other liquids that have low pressure reference EOS information available.

    Description: A two-step solid-state reaction is proposed to synthesize monophasic cobalt tellurate Co 3 TeO 6 (CTO), a type II multiferroic, using Co 3 O 4 and TeO 2 as the starting reagents. First step of the reaction results in the secondary monoclinic ( P 2 1 / c ) CoTeO 4 compound, which on further calcination (second step) leads to the primary monoclinic ( C 2/ c ) Co 3 TeO 6 phase. High-resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction and the subsequent Rietveld analysis are used to probe different phases present in the synthesized CTO and to achieve its single phase. X-ray absorption near-edge structure studies at Co K and Te L edges reveal mixed oxidation states (Co 2+/3+ ) of Co and hexavalent Te, respectively. Charge imbalance due to mixed valence Co ions has been attributed to cations vacancies. Enhanced multiferroic properties, such as effective magnetic moment, spin phonon coupling, etc., have been attributed to the aforementioned observations in grown ceramic CTO via proposed synthesis route.

    Description: Symbiotic diatom-diazotrophic cyanobacteria association (DDA) of Rhizosolenia hebetata and Rhizosolenia formosa with endosymbiotic cyanobacteria Richelia intracellularis was noticed and documented for the first time during a bloom of the cyanobacterium Trichodesmium erythraeum in the oligotrophic shelf waters along Kochi and Mangalore transects, southeastern Arabian Sea (SEAS), during spring intermonsoon (April 2012). Although the host is frequently seen, the symbiont is rarely reported in the Indian EEZ. The presence of nitrogen-fixing symbiotic association of Rhizosolenia-Richelia along with Trichodesmium erythraeum highlights the significance of DDAs on the nutrient and energy budgets of phytoplankton in the oligotrophic environments of the Arabian Sea during spring intermonsoon.
