Description: The evaluation of strength as well as failure behavior of adhesively bonded structures is essential to further improvement of their applicability. Since adhesively bonded structures are very poor in resisting peel loading, designers of these joints usually avoid subjecting these structures to peel loadings. However, in some circumstances, designers fail to avoid peel stressing in their designed structures. The aim of the present work is to enhance peel resistance of adhesively bonded structures in order to confront inevitable situations that bonded structures are subject to peel loading, without adding extra weight to the design.

Description: This study presents the temperature dependence of small signal parameters of GaN/SiC HEMTs across the 0–150°C range. The changes with temperature for transconductance (gm), output impedance (Cds and Rds), feedback capacitance (Cdg), input capacitance (Cgs), and gate resistance (Rg) are measured. The variations with temperature are established for gm, Cds, Rds, Cdg, Cgs, and Rg in the GaN technology. This information is useful for MMIC designs.

Description: Stability of electrical amplifiers is of crucial importance. Among the popular stability tests is the μ-test which has many advantages over other tests like the K-Δ test. However, the value of μ parameter is dependent on the input/output terminal characteristic impedance Zo used and this raises the concern that the predictions of the test are dependent on the choice of Zo. This paper proves that the conclusions of the μ-test regarding stability/instability remain invariant with Zo. This proof is necessary for gaining confidence in the results of the μ-test and should benefit circuit designers. Similar proofs should be extended to all other stability tests for additional insights into their validity under different circuit termination.

Description: In this paper, a fully coupled block algorithm for the solution of three-dimensional incompressible turbulent flows for use in hydraulic machinery is presented. Due to the simultaneous solution of momentum and continuity equations, implicit block coupling of pressure and velocity variables leads to faster convergence in respect to classical, loosely coupled, segregated algorithms of the SIMPLE family of algorithms. Special linear solver developments were also performed in order to extend the new fully coupled solver to high efficiency HPC simulations. These modifications allow the coupled solver to retain its improved performance and robustness in addition to mesh size scalability while solving hydraulic machinery type applications.

Description: Staphylococcus aureus is considered to be an extracellular pathogen. However, survival of S. aureus within host cells may provide a reservoir relatively protected from antibiotics, thus enabling long-term colonization of the host and explaining clinical failures and relapses after antibiotic therapy. Here we confirm that intracellular reservoirs of S. aureus in mice comprise a virulent subset of bacteria that can establish infection even in the presence of vancomycin, and we introduce a novel therapeutic that effectively kills intracellular S. aureus. This antibody-antibiotic conjugate consists of an anti-S. aureus antibody conjugated to a highly efficacious antibiotic that is activated only after it is released in the proteolytic environment of the phagolysosome. The antibody-antibiotic conjugate is superior to vancomycin for treatment of bacteraemia and provides direct evidence that intracellular S. aureus represents an important component of invasive infections.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Lehar, Sophie M -- Pillow, Thomas -- Xu, Min -- Staben, Leanna -- Kajihara, Kimberly K -- Vandlen, Richard -- DePalatis, Laura -- Raab, Helga -- Hazenbos, Wouter L -- Morisaki, J Hiroshi -- Kim, Janice -- Park, Summer -- Darwish, Martine -- Lee, Byoung-Chul -- Hernandez, Hilda -- Loyet, Kelly M -- Lupardus, Patrick -- Fong, Rina -- Yan, Donghong -- Chalouni, Cecile -- Luis, Elizabeth -- Khalfin, Yana -- Plise, Emile -- Cheong, Jonathan -- Lyssikatos, Joseph P -- Strandh, Magnus -- Koefoed, Klaus -- Andersen, Peter S -- Flygare, John A -- Wah Tan, Man -- Brown, Eric J -- Mariathasan, Sanjeev -- England -- Nature. 2015 Nov 19;527(7578):323-8. doi: 10.1038/nature16057. Description: Blockchain technology has been commonly used in the last years in numerous fields, such as transactions documenting and monitoring real assets (house, cash) or intangible assets (copyright, intellectual property). The internet of things (IoT) technology, on the other hand, has become the main driver of the fourth industrial revolution, and is currently utilized in diverse fields of industry. New approaches have been established through improving the authentication methods in the blockchain to address the constraints of scalability and protection in IoT operating environments of distributed blockchain technology by control of a private key. However, these authentication mechanisms do not consider security when applying IoT to the network, as the nature of IoT communication with numerous entities all the time in various locations increases security risks resulting in extreme asset damage. This posed many difficulties in finding harmony between security and scalability. To address this gap, the work suggested in this paper adapts multimodal biometrics to strengthen network security by extracting a private key with high entropy. Additionally, via a whitelist, the suggested scheme evaluates the security score for the IoT system with a blockchain smart contract to guarantee that highly secured applications authenticate easily and restrict compromised devices. Experimental results indicate that our system is existentially unforgeable to an efficient message attack, and therefore, decreases the expansion of infected devices to the network by up to 49 percent relative to traditional schemes.
