    Description: Microzooplankton are the main consumers of marine phytoplankton. Intrinsic traits of phytoplankton can reduce grazing mortality, directly influencing phytoplankton population dynamics, food web ecology and biogeochemical cycling. We examined the impact of calcification in mediating the functional grazing response of three heterotrophic dinoflagellates, on the coccolithophore, Emiliania huxleyi . A variety of parameters, including predator grazing and growth rates, were examined over a 24–48 h period, at one to five prey concentrations for five isolates of E. huxleyi that fell along a gradient of calcification states. Significant differences in ingestion and clearance rate were strain-specific, and no apparent trends were observed in relation to calcification. However, predators had, on average, a 60% slower growth rate on calcified strains relative to naked strains; furthermore, gross growth efficiency was reduced when ingesting calcified strains. A growth rate model demonstrated a positive feedback from grazing interactions whereby decreased predator growth rate on calcified strains resulted in the accumulation of E. huxleyi . This study highlights the complexity involved in understanding the role of prey phenotype on grazing rates, and emphasizes the importance in considering morphological traits when deciphering predator–prey interactions in the plankton.

    Description: Natural gas hydrate (NGH) is a solid crystalline material composed of water and natural gas (primarily methane) that is stable under conditions of moderately high pressure and moderately low temperature found in permafrost and continental margin sediments. A NGH petroleum system is different in a number of important ways from conventional petroleum systems related to large concentrations of gas and petroleum. The critical elements of the NGH petroleum system are: (1) a gas hydrate stability zone (GHSZ) in which pressure and temperature lie within the field of hydrate stability, creating a thermodynamic trap of suitable thickness for NGH concentrations to form; (2) recent and modern gas flux into the GHSZ along migration pathways; and (3) suitable sediment host sands within the GHSZ. These elements have to be active now and in the recent geological past. Exploration in continental margin sediments includes basin analysis to identify source and host sediment likelihood and disposition, potential reservoir localization using existing seismic analysis tools for locating turbidite sands and estimating NGH saturation, and deposit characterization using drilling and logging. Drilling has validated first-order seismic analysis techniques for identifying and quantifying NGH using rock physics mechanical models.

    Description: Mutation at the mouse progressive ankylosis (ank) locus causes a generalized, progressive form of arthritis accompanied by mineral deposition, formation of bony outgrowths, and joint destruction. Here, we show that the ank locus encodes a multipass transmembrane protein (ANK) that is expressed in joints and other tissues and controls pyrophosphate levels in cultured cells. A highly conserved gene is present in humans and other vertebrates.     Description: The zeta subunit of the T cell antigen receptor complex is required for targeting nascent receptor complexes to the cell surface and for receptor-mediated signal transduction. To examine the significance of the zeta subunit in T cell development, mice deficient for zeta expression were generated by gene targeting. These zeta-/- mice had few CD4+CD8+ thymocytes, and the generation of CD4+ and CD8+ single positive T cells was impaired but not completely abrogated. Peripheral T cells were present but were unusual in that they expressed small amounts of CD5 and few T cell receptors.     Description: Near a black hole, differential rotation of a magnetized accretion disk is thought to produce an instability that amplifies weak magnetic fields, driving accretion and outflow. These magnetic fields would naturally give rise to the observed synchrotron emission in galaxy cores and to the formation of relativistic jets, but no observations to date have been able to resolve the expected horizon-scale magnetic-field structure. We report interferometric observations at 1.3-millimeter wavelength that spatially resolve the linearly polarized emission from the Galactic Center supermassive black hole, Sagittarius A*.     Description: The drumlin field at the surge-type glacier, Múlajökull, provides an unusual opportunity to build a model of drumlin formation based on field observations in a modern drumlin-forming environment. These observations indicate that surges deposit till layers that drape the glacier forefield, conform to drumlin surfaces, and are deposited in shear. Observations also indicate that erosion helps create drumlin relief, effective stresses in subglacial till are highest between drumlins, and during quiescent flow crevasses on the glacier surface overly drumlins while subglacial channels occupy intervening swales. In the model we consider gentle undulations on the bed bounded by subglacial channels at low water pressure. During quiescent flow, slip of temperate ice across these undulations and basal water flow toward bounding channels create an effective-stress distribution that maximizes till entrainment in ice on the heads and flanks of drumlins. Crevasses amplify this effect but are not necessary for it. During surges effective stresses are uniformly low, and the bed shears pervasively. Vigorous basal melting during surges releases debris from ice and deposits it on the bed, with deposition augmented by transport in the deforming bed. As surge cycles progress, drumlins migrate down-glacier and grow at increasing rates, due to positive feedbacks that depend on drumlin height. Drumlin growth can be accompanied by either net aggradation or erosion of the bed, and drumlin heights and stratigraphy generally correspond with observations. This model highlights that drumlin growth can reflect instabilities other than those of bed-shear instability models, which require heuristic till-transport assumptions.

    Notes: To determine whether the RNA of bacterial viruses is polyadenylated like bacterial mRNAs, pulse-labelled as well as the steady-state population of bacteriophage T7-specific transcripts were examined for the presence of poly(A) tracts by binding to oligo(dT) cellulose followed by hybridization with specific gene probes. Representatives of all classes of bacteriophage-specific mRNA — early, middle and late — were found to be polyadenylated. This conclusion was confirmed by screening the products of oligo(dT)-dependent cDNA synthesis. A cDNA library was prepared from RNA synthesized after bacteriophage T7 infection and the sequence of bacteriophage-specific clones was determined to define the sites of polyadenylation. About half of the clones were polyadenylated near the end of a protein-coding region, one of them at the site of post-transcriptional processing by RNase III. Other clones were polyadenylated within protein-coding regions. These observations suggest that polyadenylation occurs after the nucleolytic processing of primary transcripts and in some cases also after mRNA degradation has already begun.
