Notes: Abstract Velocity and turbidity were measured over a tidal cycle during both spring and neap tides in the Ribble estuary England. The data was analysed to determine the relative magnitudes of the various components of the residual circulation and sediment flux. The Lagrangian residual circulation was found to be dominated by the influence of freshwater input to the estuary the landward directed component of the circulation due to the Stokes drift being cancelled by the Eulerian flow induced by set-upThe dominant driving mechanism of the residual flux of suspended sediment was found to vary both spatially and over the spring-neap cycle. During the neap tide the flux in the mid estuary was negligable, however, during the spring tide landward transport of sediment by the mechanism of tidal pumping was found to be the dominant mechanism.

Description: The objectives, state-of-the-art, and problems of large space structures control are outlined. The general objectives range from basic deployment and maneuvering, where some vibration modes may be suppressed, to disturbance rejection for very high performance imaging applications. The controls selected generally must produce some combination of eigenvalue/eigenvector and loads modification in order to achieve the mission objectives. An experiment illustrating the dynamic control of a suspended circular plate is described. Analysis methods used in system modelling, signal processing, and process control and monitoring are discussed. Sensor and actuator performance are assessed.

Description: Methods are presented for representing unsteady aerodynamic loadings, valid for arbitrary motion, for the two-dimensional typical section with a trailing-edge control surface in incompressible flow and a three-dimensional lifting surface with leading- or trailing-edge control surfaces in subsonic compressible flow. Loads for the two-dimensional incompressible case are obtained via analytic continuation of the Theodorsen function into the complex plane, with guidance from a time-domain approximation of the Wagner indicial function. For the three-dimensional case, it is proposed that oscillatory generalized aerodynamic forces be approximated by Pade fractions, thereby permitting an obvious continuation into the complex plane. A theoretical justification for this procedure is briefly outlined, and some practical aspects of its implementation are discussed.
