    Notes: Abstract Metal containing silica gels with a Me/Si molar ratio between 0.01 and 0.2 are submitted to thermal treatment under hydrogen within the temperature range 600 to 1000°C. The changes occurring during these treatments are followed by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, Mössbauer spectrometry and static magnetization measurements. During these treatments, nickel is nearly totally reduced to metal particles, the mean size of which increases from 3 to 10 nm with increasing temperature, but does not vary appreciably with nickel content. These particles exhibit a classical superparamagnetic behavior and are stable towards reoxidation when reexposed to air at room temperature. Iron and cobalt behave in a notably different manner. First, in both cases, silicates may be formed during the thermal treatment and consequently the reduction to the metallic state is not complete unless it occurs at high temperature (1000°C and above). Secondly, the particles formed are much less stable toward reoxidation, especially in the case of iron. Accordingly, the evolution of the magnetic behavior is much more complex than in the case of nickel.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Im distalen Kolon und Zäkum der Ratte wurde der Einfluß von kurzkettigen Fettsäuren (SCFA) auf die Mg-, Na- und Wasserabsorption mittels luminaler Perfusion der Darmsegmente in vivo untersucht. Der Effekt kurzkettiger Fettsäuren auf die K-Absorption im distalen Kolon sowie von K auf die Mg-Absorption im distalen Kolon und Zäkum wurde ebenfalls geprüft. Butyrat (60 mmol/l) sowie eine Mischung von SCFA (60 mmol/l Azetat, 20 mmol/l Propionat, 10 mmol/l Butyrat) stimulierten die Mg- und K-Absorption im distalen Kolon, während die Na- und Wasserabsorption unbeeinflußt blieben. Der Effekt auf die Mg-Absorption war pH-abhängig. Im Zäkum steigerte Butyrat die Na- und Wasserabsorption, nicht jedoch die Mg-Absorption. Azetat (60 mmol/l) beeinflußte die Elektrolytabsorption in beiden Darmsegmenten nicht. K (30 mmol/l) hemmte die Mg-Absorption im distalen Kolon, nicht jedoch im Zäkum. Aus diesen Befunden wird geschlossen, daß die bei der Fermentation von Kohlenhydraten im Dickdarm anfallenden kurzkettigen Fettsäuren die Mg-, K- und Na-Absorption durch Bereitstellung von Protonen für die in der apikalen Membran des Epithels lokalisierten Mg++/H+-, K+/H+- und Na+/H+-Austauscher stimulieren. K scheint im Kolon die Absorption von Mg durch Beeinträchtigung eines Mechanismus zu hemmen, der nicht auf kurzkettige Fettsäuren anspricht.
    Notes: Summary The influence of short chain fatty acids (SCFA) on Mg, Na, and water absorption was studied in the rat distal colon and caecum using an in vivo luminal perfusion technique. The effect of SCFA on K absorption by the distal colon and the effect of K on Mg absorption by the distal colon and caecum were also investigated. Butyrate (60 mmol/l) or a mixture of SCFA (60 mmol/l acetate, 20 mmol/l propionate, 10 mmol/l butyrate) stimulated Mg and K absorption by the distal colon, while Na and water absorption was not affected. The effect on Mg absorption was pH-dependent. In the caecum, butyrate enhanced Na and water absorption, but not Mg absorption. Acetate (60 mmol/l) did not influence electrolyte absorption by either intestinal segment. K (30 mmol/l) inhibited Mg absorption by the distal colon, but not by the caecum. It is concluded from these findings that SCFA deriving from fermentation of carbohydrates in the large intestine stimulate Mg, K, and Na absorption by delivering protons to Mg++/H+, K+/H+ and Na+/H+ exchangers located in the apical membrane of the epithelium. K seems to inhibit Mg absorption in the colon by affecting a mechanism which does not respond to SCFA.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Das aus dem Pankreas stammende Peptid Amylin (1 µg/kg) reduzierte nach intraperitonealer (IP) Injektion die kumulative Futteraufnahme bei Ratten, denen vor der Injektion das Futter für 24 h entzogen worden war bzw. bei Ratten, denen Futter ad lib. zur Verfügung stand, für bis zu 4 h. Der Effekt trat zu verschiedenen Zeitpunkten des Tag/Nacht-Zyklus (Beginn der Dunkelphase, Mitte der Dunkelphase, Beginn der Hellphase) auf. Der verzehrsreduzierende Effekt von IP verabreichtem Amylin wurde zu keinem dieser Zeitpunkte durch subdiaphragmatische Vagotomie aufgehoben. Vagotomie führte eher zu einer Verstärkung des verzehrsreduzierenden Effekts von Amylin, und zwar nach einem 24stündigen Futterentzug bei Injektion zu Beginn der Hellphase oder in der Mitte der Dunkelphase. Im Unterschied zu früheren Untersuchungen mit älteren Ratten konnte ein verzehrsreduzierender Effekt von Amylin auch bei Ratten beobachtet werden, denen vor der Injektion das Futter nicht entzogen worden war. In Ergänzung früherer Befunde zeigen also die Ergebnisse, daß der verzehrsreduzierende Effekt von IP verabreichtem Amylin zu verschiedenen Tageszeiten ausgelöst und durch subdiaphragmatische Vagotomie nicht aufgehoben werden kann.
    Notes: Summary The pancreatic peptide amylin (1 µg/kg) injected intraperitoneally reduced cumulative food intake for up to 4 h in food-deprived (24 h) and non-deprived rats at various times of the day, i.e., at dark onset, in the middle of the dark phase, and at light onset. At none of these times did subdiaphragmatic vagotomy abolish the anorectic effect of amylin. Rather, vagotomy enhanced, by unknown mechanisms, amylin's anorectic effect in food-deprived rats at light onset and in the middle of the dark phase. In contrast to previous studies with older rats, amylin's anorectic effect was also observed when injected into nondeprived rats. The findings of the present study extend previous reports in that amylin's anorectic effect, not being abolished by abdominal vagotomy after intraperitoneal injection, can be elicited at different times of the day.

    Notes: Abstract Linear-elastic fracture mechanics and J-integral test methods were used to determine the static fracture behavior of a porous volcanic tuff. Notched and prefatigued specimens of two different sizes were tested in three-point bending. The fracture toughness (K Ic ) and theJ-resistance (J vs. crack growth) curve for each specimen was determined. The results indicate that there is good agreement between the fracture parameters determined by the two methods; however, there is some dependence of the results on specimen size. Possible reasons for this specimen-size dependence are discussed.
