Notes: Summary Pirmenol, a new class IA antiarrhythmic agent, has shown promise in short-term trials, but long-term efficacy has not been documented. We thus evaluated 11 patients with frequent (≥60/h) premature ventricular complexes (PVC) given oral pirmenol for 25–727 days. Ten of 11 patients entering the long-term open trial had shown ≥70% (mean 83%) PVC suppression during in-hospital pirmenol dose ranging. Long-term pirmenol was given in divided doses of 100–600 mg/day. Mean PVC frequency during baseline was 13,078/24h (range, 3,218–32,718); couplets averaged 481/24h (1–2,829) and runs 45/24h (0–334). Ambulatory monitoring was performed at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months, then semiannually. Mean absolute PVC suppression at 1 month averaged 75% (p≤0.02). Median individual percentage PVC suppression was 94%. During the first 3 months, 8 patients (73%) continued to show a favorable response (≥70% suppression), and 3 had arrhythmia recurrence and were dropped. One responder was withdrawn after the onset of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, and another early responder was withdrawn after 3 months because of arrhythmia relapse. Six patients have been treated for over 1 year, with 99% mean PVC suppression. Mean couplet and run frequencies at 1 month decreased by means of 76% (p≤0.05) and 92% (p=0.001) respectively. At 1 year, couplets were suppressed 99.8% and runs by 99.7% in the 6 patients remaining on pirmenol. Mean QT interval increased slightly (7.1%,p〈0.05); mean PR and QRS intervals were unchanged. Plasma pirmenol concentrations averaged 1.49 µg/ml at clinic evaluations, 1.72 µg/ml in responders vs 1.08 µg/ml in nonresponders. Inade-quate plasma drug concentrations may be one cause for arrhythmia recurrence. Adverse effects were minimal. Thus, oral pirmenol is a safe and effective agent for long-term outpatient management of complex ventricular arrhythmias in selected patients.

Notes: A total of 59 old wheat cultivars grown in Germany prior to 1960 were tested for mildew response using a collection of 12 differential isolates of Erysiphe graminis DC f. sp. tritici Marchal (Blumeria graminis (DC) Speer f. sp. tritici). Nineteen cultivars did not possess any major resistance gene and 25 were characterized by susceptible or intermediate responses. Fifteen cultivars revealed isolate-specific response patterns that could not be attributed to known major resistance genes or gene combinations. Many of the old German cultivars inherited a mildew-resistance gene from the Canadian cultivar ‘Garnet’ which is tentatively designated M1-Ga. Cultivars ‘Bretonischer Bartweizen’ (designated M1-Br) and ‘Adlungs Alemannen’ (designated M1-Ad) appeared to carry unknown resistance genes.Among 18 winter wheat cultivars released in the former GDR. eight showed susceptibility to all isolates used. Cv. “Borenos” carries resistance gene Pm3c. Five cultivars possess gene Pm4b. two cultivars gene pm5 and one cultivar a combination of genes Pm2 and Pm4b. Cultivar ‘Zentos’ was resistant to almost all isolates used. Its resistance might be conditioned by different unknown major resistance genes.

Notes: Major genes for resistance to powdery mildew were analysed in 24 Czechoslovakian wheat cultivars and, in part, in their parents. For this purpose individual isolates of the pathogen, able to differentiate host lines with known resistance genes, were selected. Eight of nineteen winter wheat cultivars do not possess any major resistance gene. Three cultivars have one and seven have two genes. One cultivar carries a combination of three genes (Pm2, Pm4b, Pm8). The most common resistance genes are Pm4b, Pm5 and Pm8. Pm2 is once combined with Pm6. Only one of five spring cultivars lacked a major resistance gene. Mlk is once present alone and twice combined with Pm5. There is one spring cultivar with a novel combination of three genes: Pm1, Pm5 and another gene needing further characterization. The observations are discussed with additional results of parent lines and further information on pedigrees.

Notes: The temperature rise induced by sense currents and the sense burnout currents were measured for 0.75-, 1.25-, 2.0-, and 4.0-μm-wide end-on multilayer M-R head transducers. For the test elements, the burnout currents were approximately 12 mA per micron of width; nominal operating currents were less than 4 mA per micron of width. At the nominal operating currents, the temperature rise in the 0.75-μm-wide element was 23 °C. For the 1.25-, 2.0-, and 4.0-μm-wide elements, temperature rise was less than 10 °C.

Notes: The surface topography and structure of low-pressure chemical vapor deposited silicon films on thermal oxide grown on (100) silicon substrates have been investigated after different processing steps. Atomic force microscopy topographic measurements are performed on undoped as-grown samples and after ex situ phosphorous doping from a POCl3 source. In addition, topographies of the doped films are obtained using constant current scanning tunneling microscopy on hydrofluoric acid passivated surfaces under high vacuum. As a result we have found that surface topography and roughness are mainly determined by the deposition process. Roughness of films deposited at 620 °C is related to the grain structure represented by hillocks with typical lateral dimensions between 50 and 150 nm in the images. Doping by high temperature diffusion and subsequent annealing causes a complete recrystallisation of the film, leading to typical lateral grain sizes between 200 and 600 nm. However, the surface topography of the doped films still remains determined by the hillocks formed by the deposition process. Values of the surface roughness are between 7 and 14 nm depending on the process step. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.
