Notes: Crack–opening displacement (COD) measurements were performed on a commercial lead zirconate titanate (PZT). The intrinsic fracture toughness (or crack–tip toughness) of this material was determined using a new evaluation procedure, which takes into account the near–tip CODs and complete crack profile CODs. The crack–tip toughness KI0 was determined from an extrapolation of COD data obtained at various loading stages, thus avoiding the complications caused by subcritical crack growth in PZT. Results for plane strain and plane stress condition are presented.

Notes: After bipolar electric fatigue of bulk lead–zirconate–titanate ceramics, the well known reduced remnant polarization values are observed as well as an asymmetric strain hysteresis reflecting a macroscopic offset polarization. Thermal treatment and high electric fields each liberate the domain system from the microscopic defects responsible for the macroscopic offsets. High electric fields (4 Ec) only allow one to remove the type of pinning center inducing an offset polarization, while thermal treatment also removes more stable agglomerates and rejuvenates the material to almost its original properties. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The long-standing question whether or not oxygen gas is liberated from the perovskite lattice during fatigue of ferroelectric lead zirconate titanate ceramics is addressed. During cycling, the surrounding gas atmosphere of the sample was analyzed continuously by a mass spectrometer. It was found that, in contrast to previous statements in the literature, the oxygen detected originates from air dissolved in the surrounding liquid. An upper limit for oxygen liberation from the sample is given. We conclude that all mechanistical approaches for ferroelectric fatigue based on oxygen liberation are in need of revision. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The field-induced jump-like dynamics of a single planar domain wall are investigated in single crystal uniaxial ferroelectric–ferroelastic Gd2(MoO4)3 containing extended bulk defects. The kind and location of the defects interfering with the free motion of the domain wall determines which type of elastic vibration is excited by the discontinuous jump of the domain wall. Time coincidence between optically observed jumps, Barkhausen pulses, and acoustic emissions each occur for particular jumps only. The time coincidence conditions correlate with the vibration spectra and differ for the initial release of the wall, large domain wall jumps, and clamped motions. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Direct optical images of local surface potentials generated by the process zone of a crack are shown for a thickness-poled ferroelectric ceramic using liquid crystals. The observed potentials can be mapped to stresses within the material revealing the complex shape and time development of the process zone so far not accessible using other techniques. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: This work describes the measurement of R-curve behavior in ferroelectric ceramics using four-point bend specimens with controlled semielliptical surface cracks. The results are compared for two compositions of lead lanthanum zirconate titanate. One exhibits ferroelastic behavior, the other electrostrictive linear elastic behavior. R-curves are measured in the crack length regime of 0.1 to 0.8 mm. The ferroelastic composition displays a toughness increase from 0.5 to 1.2 MPa·m1/2. The linear elastic composition displays a flat R-curve. The R-curve behavior is attributed to ferroelastic toughening.

Notes: R-curves of lead zirconate titanate (PZT) have been measured with compact tension (CT) specimens for different poling conditions and grain sizes. Depending on poling direction the plateau value of the R-curves ranged from 1.13 to 1.54 MPa·m1/2 for a grain size of 6.4 μm and from 1.14 to 1.30 MPa·m1/2 for a grain size of 5.2 μm. Poling in the thickness direction yielded the material with the highest fracture toughness while the direction parallel to the loading direction led to the lowest fracture toughness.

Notes: The anisotropic fracture behavior in unpoled and poled (1−x)Pb(Zn2/3Nb1/3)−xPbTiO3 (x=0.045) (PZN–4.5%PT) single-crystal relaxor ferroelectrics cut along the crystal planes, [010] and [001], was characterized. The crack tip toughness (Ktip) determined from Vickers indentations was compared with the R-curve behavior measured using the single-edge V-notch beam (SEVNB) method. Several of the SEVNB fracture experiments resulted in cracks forming and propagating under mixed mode loading (KI and KII) along the [110] crystal plane. Other specimens formed cracks at 0° along the [010] plane. To assess the anisotropic fracture behavior, the local and global critical energy release rates were determined using Stroh's formalism.

Notes: Subcritical crack growth in terms of velocity–stress intensity factor (v–K) curves in lead zirconate titanate (PZT) were experimentally characterized on poled and unpoled compact tension specimens. The poled specimens were tested under open- and short-circuit electrical boundary conditions, which resulted in an increase in fracture toughness by 0.2 MPa·m1/2 for the accessible velocity range (v= 10−9 to 10−4 m/s) in the open-circuit case. Subcritical crack growth of unpoled specimens was obtained under ambient (relative humidity = 35%) and dry (relative humidity ∼ 0.02%) conditions over a regime in stress intensity factor of 0.5 MPa·m1/2.
