Translated from Okeanologiya, 2012, 52(2), 292-305, Oceanology, 52(2), 271-283, https://doi.org/10.1134/S0001437012010146
    Publication Date: 2023-03-16
Description: Results of geochemical studies of suspended matter from the water mass over the hydrothermal field at 9°50'N on the East Pacific Rise are reported. The suspended matter was sampled in background waters, in the buoyant plume, and in the near-bottom waters. Contents of Si, Al, P, Corg, Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Ni, Co, As, Cr, Cd, Pb, Ag, and Hg were determined. No definite correlations were found between the elements in the background waters. Many of the chemical elements correlated with Fe and associated with its oxyhydroxides in the buoyant plume. In the near-bottom waters trace elements are associated with Fe, Zn, and Cu (probably, with their sulfides formed during mixing of hydrothermal fluids with seawater). Chemical composition of sediment matter precipitated in a sediment trap was similar to the near-bottom suspended matter.

Description: This paper reports results of a geochemical study of suspended particulate matter and particle fluxes in the Norwegian Sea above the Bear Island slope. Concentrations of suspended particles and the main components of suspended matter were determined in the euphotic, intermediate (clean water), and bottom nepheloid layers. It was shown that biogenic components are predominant in water above the nepheloid layer, whereas suspended matter of the nepheloid layer is formed by resuspension of lithogenic components of bottom sediments. Chemical compositions of suspended matter and material collected in sediment traps are identical.

Description: Basic parameters of sedimentation environment are considered: the Western Boundary Deep Current that transports sedimentary material and distributes it on the survey area; the nepheloid layer, its features, and the distribution of concentrations and particulate standing crop in it; distribution of horizontal and vertical fluxes of sedimentary material; and bottom sediments and their absolute masses (accumulation rates). Comparison of vertical fluxes of particulate matter and accumulation rates of sediments showed that contemporary fluxes of sedimentary material to the bottom provided distribution of accumulation rates of sediments within the survey area during Holocene.

    Publication Date: 2023-05-12
Description: Aerosols collected by net method over the Western Pacific were investigated. Distribution of eolian material, its mineral and chemical compositions are controlled by the climatic and circumcontinental zonalities. It was stated that Fe and Mn were bound with mineral components of aerosols, while trace elements are bound with organogenic matter. Fluxes of aerosols and their components on the ocean surface were determined.

    Publication Date: 2023-05-12
Description: Chemical composition of the upper layer of sediments (0-1 cm) in the Kolvits and Knazhaya inlets, and also in the deep-water part of the Kandalaksha Bay is considered. It is shown that silts are richer in Fe, TOC, and heavy metals, than sands. The highest concentration of these elements is found in sediments under mixing zones of riverine and sea waters. Correlations of P, Zn, Cd, and Cu with iron are high, and correlations of Pb and Cu with organic carbon are also high. Very high concentration of Pb in the Kandalaksha Bay indicate technogenic pollution of sediments. Lignin makes significant contribution to formation of organic matter in the sediments. Composition of lignin in bottom sediments of the Kandalaksha Bay is defined by composition of lignin in soils and aerosols. Vanillin and syringyl structures prevail in molecular composition of lignin in bottom sediments. Their sources are coniferous vegetations, soils, and mosses. Ratios of certain types of phenol compounds indicate pollution of the upper layer of sediments by technogenic lignin. Lead and copper correlate well with this technogenic lignin.

    Publication Date: 2023-05-12
Description: CTD and nephelometric sounding data are considered along with parameters of the near-bottom currents and particulate fluxes measured by a subsurface mooring station in the northern part of the Bear Island Trough. It is shown that the near-bottom current is characterized by highly variable parameters, while distribution of suspended particulate matter demonstrates surface and bottom maxima. Horizontal and vertical fluxes of sedimentary material in the nepheloid layer are studied.

Description: The sedimentation system of the bottom contour current over the continental slope of the Bear Island in the Norwegian Sea is considered. The nepheloid layer that provides high horizontal flux of sedimentary material represents the main source of matter for bottom sediments. Vertical particulate matter flux is largely formed in the nepheloid layer; flux from higher layers of the water column is insignificant. Horizontal and vertical fluxes of sedimentary matter show positive correlation. Matter flux from bottom sediment into the nepheloid layer and residence time of particles in the latter are estimated.
