    Notes: Summary For the suitable separation and quantitative determination of a number of radiolytic products obtained from benzene-carbon tetrachloride mixtures a column containing 5% SE-30 silicone gum rubber on Chromosorb W was used. Eleven components were identified in the irradiated mixtures and six of them determined quantitatively. The relative retention data and relative molar responses are reported.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die vorliegende Arbeit befaßt sich mit dem Nachweismechanismus von Detektoren, die metastabile Atome von Edelgasen verwenden. In der Diskussion werden die Größe des Untergrundstromes sowie die Empfindlichkeit dieser Detektoren, die Abhängigkeit von Art und Reinheit des Trägergases, die Beschaffenheit der Probe, die Strömmungsgeschwindigkeit des Trägergases und die Geometrie der Detektrozelle behandelt. Auf der Grundlage dieser Diskussion ist es möglich, die Ansprech-Eigenschaften des Helium- und des Argon-Detektors für eine bestimmte Probe vorauszusagen.
    Abstract: Résumé Dans ce texte, on étudie le mécanisme de détection pour les détecteurs mettant en jeu des atomes métastables de gaz rares. L'étude porte sur l'ordre de grandeur du courant de base ainsi que sur la réponse de ces détecteurs en fonction du type de gaz vecteur, de sa pureté, des caractéristiques de l'échantillon, du débit de gaz vecteur, de la forme de la cellule de détection. En se basant sur cette étude, il est possible d'expliquer et de prévoir les caracteéristiques de la réponse des détecteurs à hélium et des détecteurs à argon pour des échantillons de substances déterminées.
    Notes: Summary The present paper deals with the detection mechanism of detectors using metastable atoms of rare gases. The discussion considers the magnitude of the background current as well as the response of these detectors, the dependence on the type and purity of, carrier gas, the nature of the sample, the flow rate of carrier gas and the geometry of the detector cell. On the basis of this discussion it is possible to explain and predict the response characteristics of helium as well as argon detectors for a particular sample.

    Notes: Conclusions Data on the detectors using metastable atoms of rare gases are summarized in this article. The results are correlated, and a qualitative explanation of the detection mechanism given. The use of these detectors, their advantages, and disadvantages are discussed. This information is further useful as an orientational manual for work with both commercial and home-made detectors, which allows the experimentor to predict and prevent inadequate detector performance and to explain the character of response. The expected character of the response in the helium and the argon detectors in various cases, are given for the reader's orientation in Tables V. and VI. Finally, we deem it necessary to repeat that the problems of the helium detector are involved and complex. The polarization voltage and the carrier gas purity are the most important parameters. The flow rate of carrier gas, the detector geometry, temperature, pressure, and the source of the ionizing radiation are less critical factors.

    Notes: Summary Two columns in parallel are used for the separation of C1−C10 hydrocarbons: a SCOT column coated with Apiezon L and a packed column containing 2 m Durapak (phenylisocyanate/Porasil C) and 3 m 25% squalane on Gas Chrom P. The separation efficiency of the combined packed column is demonstrated by the analysis of radiolytic products of n-pentane. Special attention was given to the separation of pentenes and to their separation from the solvent peak (n-pentane). The effect of temperature on the individual separations as well as the optimal experimental conditions for the C1−C10 hydrocarbon separation are discussed. Relative retention times of the C1−C6 saturated as well as the unsaturated hydrocarbons on the combined packed column are presented.

Es werden die quantitativen Aspekte im Zusammenhang mit der “Parking-Technik” diskutiert und es wird die Behandlung der Probe nach der Bestrahlung dargelegt.
    Abstract: Sommaire On décrit un systéme de commutation pour la chromatographie en phase gazeuse avec double colonne en vue de l'analyse des produits gazeux de la radiolyse de l'acide acetique. Les aspects quantitatifs de la «technique de parking» sont discutés et on décrit la manipulation sur des échantillons irradiés.
    Notes: Summary A dual-column chromatographic switching system for the analysis of gaseous radiolytic products of acetic acid is described. The quantitative aspects with connection of the use of “parking technique” are discussed and the sample treatment after irradiation is explained.
