Notes: The interaction of a premixed flame with the flow near the front stagnation point of a body has rightly received considerable attention in combustion theory. Virtually all the investigations so far have been concerned with high strain rates, when the flame lies inside the boundary layer and can be extinguished. By contrast, we consider moderate strain rates, when the flame stands clear of the boundary layer and pushes the incident flow away from the body. The object is to determine this displacement effect, which is much more pronounced than that of the boundary layer.

Notes: Abstract A bounded shear flow proposed by Glauert is re-examined, to determine more precisely the disturbance caused by the boundary layer on the plate. Toomre and Rott's result, that the pressure gradient due to bounding overtakes the Li-Murray value for an unbounded flow within a surprisingly short distance of the leading edge, is thereby confirmed in a more realistic context. But both of these are found to be less important than that due to the induced circulation predicted by Glauert. While bounding produces a larger leading edge drag than the unbounded theory predicts, circulation gives more lift. The discussion of pressure on and ahead of the plate is given for general bounding. In particular, it shows that the present results are typical and that the anomaly found by Toomre and Rott always disappears when the limit of remote bounding is taken correctly.

Notes: Abstract Re-examination of a bounded shear flow proposed by Glauert is here completed by setting the plate off the centerline. The two remaining phenomena for general bounding, namely local circulation and asymmetry in the global circulation, are thereby exhibited. The former gives a leading-edge lift comparable to that of global circulation, while the latter produces as important a drag as the walls. A discussion of the second-order boundary layer is given, concentrating on the circulation component since its recent treatment is erroneous.

    Notes: Summary The present paper contains an existence and uniqueness theorem for the singularCauchy problem for the non-homogeneousEuler-Poisson-Darboux equation: $$\begin{gathered} u_{xx} + u_{yy} - u_{tt} - \frac{k}{t}u_t = f(x,y,t),t 〉 0,k 〉 0, \hfill \\ u(x,y,0) = u_t (x,y,0) = 0. \hfill \\ \end{gathered}$$ The solution of this problem is used to prove an existence and uniqueness theorem for the following singularCauchy problem: $$\begin{gathered} u_{xx} + u_{yy} - u_{tt} - \frac{k}{t}u_t - h(x,y,t)u = 0,t 〉 0,k 〉 0, \hfill \\ u(x,y,0) = g(x,y),u_t (x,y,0) = 0, \hfill \\ \end{gathered}$$ by the method of successive approximations.
