Notes: The mundane and expanded marketing mix concept has an importantrole in Western marketing literature for both tangible products andintangible services. The nine Ps - namely promotion, product, price, place, process management, personnel, physical facilities, publicrelations and power - are now the foundation for strategicplanning in many companies. While the marketing mix concept remains animportant framework for the Western world, its contribution towards thelatter's declining economic prowess in recent years appears minimal. Onthe other hand, the East Asian economic powerhouse has grown fromstrength to strength. This can be attributed in no small way to certainoriental traditions and philosophies - not the least of which isSun Tzu's The Art of War. Although The Art of War is nowmore than 2,000 years old, it remains the cornerstone for strategicplanning in the East. Attempts to integrate the Western marketing mixconcept with The Art of War from the East using examples drawnfrom the construction industry in Singapore. The lessons to be learnedtherefore should be useful for strategic planners in the Westernmarketing community.

Notes: This paper shows how recent revisions in planning guidelines have helped to enhance land values in some parts of Singapore. The enhancement of land values has motivated many individual property owners to come together to put up their properties for en bloc or collective sales. The factors which are critical for successful en bloc property sales are identified in the paper using case studies where proposed en bloc sales were not successful. These provide lessons which are essential for managing successful en bloc property sales in the future.

Notes: Achieving high productivity and quality standards are two important issues in the construction industry. Buildability is an important concept adopted to help raise productivity and quality standards in the industry. While it is generally acknowledged that buildability is able to help raise productivity and quality standards in construction, no study has so far provided quantitative evidence to support the positive relationships between buildability, productivity and quality. Buildability is measured using the buildable design appraisal system in Singapore. Likewise, quality is measured using the construction quality assessment system. Productivity of building projects is measured by means of the floor area constructed per manday. By correlating these quantitative measures, there is empirical evidence to support the positive relationships between buildability, structural quality and productivity in construction.

Notes: This paper suggests that ancient Chinese business principles introduced by Tao Zhugong during the eastern Zhou dynasty (770-221 BC) are still relevant for modern-day business and management practices at the individual, company and country level. The 24 business principles extracted from Tao Zhugong's original 18 principles are presented in the paper with supporting real life cases drawn from the modern-day business setting. The match between Tao Zhugong's business principles and anecdotal cases suggests that these principles are relevant and are still practised today. The paper concludes by urging Western leaders, managers and businessmen to draw lessons for their own operations, especially if they have business dealings in China and with the Chinese in other parts of the world.

Notes: Observes that Singaporean construction firms have made increasing investments in China in recent years. It is important that these firms, as well as their Chinese counterparts, appreciate and understand each other's cultural differences/similarities. Although Singaporean culture appears to be based predominately on Chinese culture, there remain differences between the two, which, if not properly understood, can lead to misunderstandings and ineffective working. Using the four dimensions of a national culture established by Hofstede, this study is concerned with examining what constitutes Singaporean and Chinese culture. Through two case studies in China, with Singaporean and Chinese employees, the study identifies cross-cultural influences brought about by the two cultures which can affect project effectiveness.

Notes: Traditionally, clients' expectations with regard to quality in construction works are ensured and upheld by building contracts. With the recent emergence of ISO 9000 quality management systems (QMS), however, the definition and assurance of quality have taken on a new dimension. Many contractors have since applied QMS in their organizations without understanding its intricate relationship with the building contract used. Examines the likely conflicts and compatibility between standard forms of building contract and QMS. An understanding of the possible legal obligations that may arise from adopting a QMS contractually will help contractors and clients protect their interests when defects arise.

Notes: Proposes that the improvement of an existing quality management system (QMS) through flexibility and innovation will increase product and service quality, which will in turn enhance and advance the organization's business objective. Explores the "segmentalist" and "integrative" concepts within the context of construction firms. Findings from a research project suggest that these should be removed from or implemented into the organization where necessary. Believes that organizations must adopt the "integrative" approach which looks ahead into the challenges of the future rather than the "segmentalist" approach which is contented with past accomplishments. Suggests that a corporate renaissance must be created within the organization to take on these challenges and to implement change and innovation. It is therefore necessary to develop the humanistic factors and a "participatory management" environment. However, in so doing, the technical aspects are also of importance and should not be totally ignored. These are collectively the key elements to maintaining a quality management system effectively.

Notes: There are three components that make up quality costs: prevention, appraisal and failure costs. The ISO 9000 standard introduces a quality management system that has been widely claimed would reduce the costs of business. One of the ways it does this is through a reduction in quality costs. The ISO 9000 quality management system establishes work procedures that reduce defects. Proper design and implementation of these work procedures would lead to reduced wastage as more work would be done right the first time. Ultimately, the costs of operation would decrease. However, no study has been done based on the above premise. Although it has been widely claimed that ISO 9000 would reduce the costs of doing business, no studies have been undertaken within the context of ISO 9000 certified construction firms. Due to this vacuum, this paper for a start proposes a costs system to capture site quality costs, namely the "construction quality costs quantifying system" or CQCQS.
