    Description: We have experimentally studied the effect of microjets on the flow field of a Mach 0.9 round jet. Planar and three-dimensional velocity field measurements using particle image velocimetry show a significant reduction in the near-field turbulent intensities with the activation of microjets. The axial and normal turbulence intensities are reduced by about 15% and 20%, respectively, and an even larger effect is found on the peak values of the turbulent shear stress with a reduction of up to 40%. The required mass flow rate of the microjets was about 1% of the primary jet mass flux. It appears that the microjets influence the mean velocity profiles such that the peak normalized vorticity in the shear layer is significantly reduced, thus inducing an overall stabilizing effect. Therefore, we seem to have exploited the fact that an alteration in the instability characteristics of the initial shear-layer can influence the whole jet exhaust including its noise field. We have found a reduction of about 2 dB in the near-field overall sound pressure level in the lateral direction with the use of microjets. This observation is qualitatively consistent with the measured reduced turbulence intensities.

    Description: Particle imaging velocimetry, which is rapidly becoming an essential tool for the synoptic measurement of two dimensional velocity fields, is addressed. This rapid development is carried out by a growing number of fluid mechanics experimentalists who recognize the unique capabilities of the technique to measure velocity fields in both space and time, and is supported by the concomitant development and availability of microcomputer hardware and software. Various applications of the technique to map different flow regimes are described and illustrated. Hardware implementations of the technique which utilize both conventional photography for image acquisition as well as digital 'online' methods for integrated image acquisition and processing are discussed. Recommendations to further enhance the technique and make it possible to map the three velocity components in three dimensional flow regions are given.

    Description: A new velocity measurement technique is described that provides the simultaneous visualization of a two-dimensional streamline pattern and the quantification of the velocity field. The main advantage of this technique is that the velocity field can be measured with sufficient accuracy and spatial resolution so that the vorticity field can be readily obtained. This technique is ideally suited for the study of unsteady vortical flows, which occur in rotorcraft and in high-angle-of-attack aerodynamics. The technique, some of the important parameters that affect its use, and some recent examples are described.

    Description: Laser speckle velocimetry (LSV) or particle image displacement velocimetry, is introduced. This technique provides the simultaneous visualization of the two-dimensional streamline pattern in unsteady flows as well as the quantification of the velocity field over an entire plane. The advantage of this technique is that the velocity field can be measured over an entire plane of the flow field simultaneously, with accuracy and spatial resolution. From this the instantaneous vorticity field can be easily obtained. This constitutes a great asset for the study of a variety of flows that evolve stochastically in both space and time. The basic concept of LSV; methods of data acquisition and reduction, examples of its use, and parameters that affect its utilization are described.

    Description: One of the difficult problems in experimental fluid dynamics remains the determination of the vorticity field in fluid flows. Recently, a novel velocity measurement technique, commonly known as Laser Speckle or Particle Image Displacement Velocimetry became available. This technique permits the simultaneous visualization of the 2 dimensional streamline pattern in unsteady flows and the quantification of the velocity field. The main advantage of this new technique is that the whole 2 dimensional velocity field can be recorded with great accuracy and spatial resolution, from which the instantaneous vorticity field can be easily obtained. A apparatus used for taking particle displacement images is described. Local coherent illumination by the probe laser beam yielded Young's fringes of good quality at almost every location of the flow field. These fringes were analyzed and the velocity and vorticity fields were derived. Several conclusions drawn are discussed.

Speckle pattern of laser-illuminiated, seeded flow recorded in multiple-exposure photographs and processed to extract data on velocity field. Technique suited for study of vortical flows like those about helicopter rotor blades or airplane wings at high angles of attack.
