    Notes: Abstract  The Reynolds-averaged flow for a solid/free-surface juncture boundary layer and wake is documented. The three mean-velocity components and five of the Reynolds stresses are measured for a surface-piercing flat plate in a towing tank using a laser-Doppler velocimeter system for both boundary-layer and wake planes in regions close to the free surface. The experimental method is described, including the foil-plate model, laser-Doppler velocimeter system, conditions, and uncertainty analysis. The underlying flow data is in excellent agreement with benchmark data. Inner (near the plate and wake centerplane and below the free surface) and outer (near the free surface) regions of high streamwise vorticity of opposite sign are observed, which transport, respectively, high mean velocity and low turbulence from the outer to the inner and low mean velocity and high turbulence from the inner to the outer portions of the boundary layer and wake. For the wake, the inner region of vorticity is relatively weak. The physical mechanism for the streamwise vorticity is analyzed with regard to the Reynolds-averaged streamwise vorticity equation. The anisotropy of the crossplane normal Reynolds stresses closely correlates with the vorticity and, additionally, indicates similarity, i.e., its nature is such that it only depends on the proximity to the plate and free surface boundaries or wake centerplane symmetry plane. Free-surface effects on the Reynolds stresses are analyzed with regard to the behavior close to the free surface of the turbulent kinetic energy and the normal components of the anisotropy tensor and the anisotropy invariants. Close to the free surface, the turbulent kinetic energy is nearly constant and increases for the inner and outer portions, respectively, of the boundary layer and wake and the normal components of the anisotropy tensor and the anisotropy invariants roughly correspond to the limiting values for two-component turbulence. The similarities and differences between the present results and analysis with those from related studies are discussed. The data and analysis should have practical application with regard to the development of turbulence models for computational fluid dynamics methods for the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations.

    Notes: A prototype three-axis magnetometer has been developed, intended for geophysical applications, involving high-transition temperature dc superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs). Each SQUID was fabricated from a thin film of YBa2Cu3O7−x deposited on a SrTiO3 bicrystal to form two Josephson junctions, and was directly coupled to a single-turn pickup loop patterned in the same film. The three orthogonally mounted sensors were immersed in liquid nitrogen in a fiberglass Dewar and operated in separate flux-locked loops. In nominally zero ambient magnetic field, the best magnetic field resolution was 170 fT Hz−1/2 in the white noise, increasing to 225 fT Hz−1/2 at 1 Hz. The dynamic range was ±1.6×106 Hz1/2 in the white noise, and the highest slew rate achieved was 1.6 mT s−1, at 900 Hz. The 3 dB point in the frequency response was about 90 kHz. The three channels were mutually orthogonal to about 1%. The three-axis magnetometer was also operated outside the laboratory in the presence of 60 Hz and radio-frequency noise. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have fabricated several low-noise direct-current superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometers from single layers of YBa2Cu3O7−δ on 10 mm×10 mm bicrystal substrates. The magnetometer design consists of a single-turn pickup loop that is directly coupled to the SQUID inductance. At 77 K, these magnetometers exhibit large voltage modulation with applied flux of over 40 μV. The minimum flux noise, measured at 77 K using conventional flux-locked loop electronics with bias current reversal, is 3.5×10−6 Φ0/(square root of)Hz above 10 kHz and 6.5×10−6 Φ0/(square root of)Hz at 1 Hz. The field-to-flux conversion efficiency is measured to be 10 nT/Φ0, resulting in a white magnetic field noise of 35 fT/(square root of)Hz above 10 kHz, increasing to 65 fT/(square root of)Hz at 1 Hz. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract The frequency dependence of the electron-paramagnon spectrumP(Ω) in Pd is calculated within the finite bandwidth model. It is found that for an almost full band, the magnitude, the range, and the position of the peak frequency inP(Ω) are dramatically reduced compared to their values in the usual paramagnon theory. Also, we find that the frequency dependence of the spin-fluctuation contribution to the electron self-energy is strongly affected by a close proximity of the Fermi level to the top of the band. We speculate that an unusually large value of the Coulomb pseudopotential is probably partially responsible for the absence of superconductivity in Pd.
