    Description: New oceanic crust is formed at mid-ocean ridges by magmatic intrusion, volcanic eruptions, tectonic extension and hydrothermal cooling. All these active processes give rise to earthquakes, which are usually too small to be recorded on land, but can be recorded locally with ocean bottom seismometers (OBS). OBS studies on slow and fast spreading ridges have greatly contributed to our understanding of active seafloor spreading. However, at ultraslow spreading rates, predictions of amagmatic spreading proved incorrect and the processes of crustal generation are still poorly understood, partly because of the remote location of the main ultraslow ridges like the Arctic ridge system. No comprehensive microearthquake studies of ultraslow-spreading ridges have yet been undertaken.During the Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge Expedition in 2001 (AMORE2001), we made a first attempt at observing microearthquakes at Gakkel Ridge using ice floes as platforms for small seismological arrays consisting of four conventional short-period seismic stations. We successfully recorded microearthquakes including a swarm of 200 explosive sounds at the volcanic complex near 85°E which was active in 1999. We interpreted these sounds as signs of ongoing eruptive activity. The presence of a hydrothermal event plume in the water column supported this interpretation.Following this pilot study, we now started a comprehensive and comparative study of the seismicity of ultraslow-spreading ridges. As part of this project, we conducted a microseismicity survey during the Arctic Gakkel Vents Expedition 2007 (AGAVE2007). We deployed a network of three seismological arrays around the rift valley at the 85°E volcanic complex greatly improving the detection threshold and location capabilities compared to AMORE2001. The arrays had triangular shape with a central station. Each array measured about 1 km in size and was located on one ice floe. The inter-array distance was 15 km. The arrays recorded continuously at a sampling rate of 100 Hz for 16 days.We present the results of a first screening of the microearthquake data set of AGAVE2007 showing typical seismic events, their frequency and waveform characteristics and we compare the seismicity patterns to those of the pilot study AMORE2001, especially to the explosive volcanic activity of 2001 which appears to have ceased by now.

    Description: The AGAVE project is an international collaboration between scientists in the United States, Sweden, Japan, and Germany with the overarching scientific objective of studying the geological, chemical, and biological characteristics of hydrothermal venting on the Gakkel Ridge, the most slowly diverging tectonic plate boundary on Earth. The AGAVE expedition took place on the IB Oden from July 1 - August 10, 2007, and occupied two field sites where evidence of hydrothermal venting had been detected in the water column during the 2001 Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge Experiment (AMORE). The first site (~85°N, 7.5°E) is characterized by peridotite outcrops on normal fault scarps, while the second site (~85.5°N, 85°E) is characterized by constructional basaltic volcanism, thereby allowing for a comparative study of hydrothermal processes at two segments of an ultra-slow spreading ridge with contrasting geological and tectonic settings. Five primary oceanographic assets were employed during the expedition; a high-resolution, ship-mounted multi-beam bathymetry system, a CTD/rosette system for surveying and sampling the water column, the PUMA autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) for fine-scale water column surveys, the JAGUAR AUV for near-bottom geophysical and photographic surveys, and the CAMPER wireline system for acquiring digital images and samples of the deep seafloor. The combined results from the expedition are significantly expanding our understanding of volcanic and hydrothermal processes on the Gakkel Ridge. Important initial results include the discovery of the Asgard volcanic chain at the 85°E segment, the discovery of extensive microbial mats covering these new volcanoes, the discovery of basaltic glass fragments covering large portions of the seafloor near the volcanoes, and detailed mapping and sampling of water column plumes.

    Notes: The fatigue strength of spot-welded stainless sheet steels has been investigated. The main part of the fatigue tests was performed on a cold rolled austenitic stainless sheet steel (AISI304) in air at ambient temperature. For comparison, a duplex stainless steel (SAF2304) of similar yield strength as AISI304 was also incorporated into the test programme. Since the fatigue strength of spot-welded joints depends on the mode of loading, both shear-loaded and peel-loaded joints were tested. The fatigue strength of the spot-welded stainless steels was found to decrease with decreasing sheet thickness. Furthermore, the fatigue strength for peel-loaded joints is lower than that of shear-loaded joint for sheets of equal thickness.The local loading conditions at the weld edge have been analysed in terms of finite element calculations and fracture mechanics. A design parameter derived from a fracture mechanics analysis was defined for spot-welded stainless sheet steels. It was shown to predict the fatigue life of the present steels and joint configurations in a satisfactory way.

    Notes: Fatigue specimens were manufactured with a number of artificial bond defects. The defects were different configurations of non-bonded areas within the nominally perfectly-bonded region. These defects included variants with a reduced degree of bond filling, bonds with a channel without adhesive, zig-zag-shaped bond edges, and finally bond areas with smooth corners. Fatigue testing was performed with the bond loaded in the peel mode. The stiffness was measured for the bonds and was found to vary significantly with defect type and size. The fatigue strength was also found to differ substantially for different bond defects. A finite element model combined with fracture mechanics was used to predict the stiffness drop during fatigue testing of the bonded specimens and to predict fatigue life. The effect of defects in the bond on the stiffness and life was predicted in a satisfactory way.
