Notes: The viscosity of aqueous solutions of poly(ethyleneoxide) (PEO) in the dilute and semidilute regimes exhibits a maximum as a function of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) concentration. The maximum is shown to correspond to the point at which the polymer coils are saturated with surfactant. From intrinsic viscosity and small angle neutron scattering (SANS), we obtain a value of 0.65 for the excluded volume exponent of PEO at saturation. Carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxation measurements indicate that the correlation time for local segmental motion for polymer segments attached to micelles is reduced from about 10−11 to 10−9 s. However, only a relatively small fraction of the total coil is in direct contact with the micelles at saturation. A model for the polymer–surfactant complex is presented based on these considerations.

Notes: Acicular α-FeOOH particles with particle length of about 0.2 μm and axial ratio of about 8 were used as the starting material to prepare acicular Fe-Co alloy particles. They were made by adsorbing Co(OH)2 on the surface of α-FeOOH particles, followed by dehydration, annealing, and reduction. In order to prevent sintering at high temperatures, the Co-α-FeOOH particles were first dehydrated at 300 °C and then coated with a thin layer of silica before high-temperature treatments. Furthermore, after reduction, the metallic powder was immersed in toluene to avoid oxidation. The particle structure of Fe-Co was determined from x-ray diffraction. It has been found that, up to 50 at. % Co, all the Fe-Co particles have the same bcc structure and similar lattice constant. The magnetic properties of Fe-Co alloy particles with different Co concentrations were investigated using a vibrating sample magnetometer. The specific saturation magnetizations σs are about 30% below those of bulk materials. The maximum value of σs at room temperature is obtained with 42 at. % Co. The coercivity that mainly originates from shape anisotropy is as high as 1250 Oe for the particles with 33 at. % Co. Furthermore, σs drops sharply with Si content while Hc peaks at 0.6% Si. The coercivities of the particles also depend on the crystallite size. Hc shows a maximum when the crystallite size is about 300 A(ring).

Notes: [Auszug] The two regimes have been studied theoretically5'8, by computer simulation9'14 and by experimental studies of various colloids3'15'21. Each regime is distinguished by several distinct and characteristic features. The structures of the aggregates in both regimes are fractal, so that the mass (or ...

Notes: Abstract  An integrative cloning vector was constructed using a randomly cloned HindIII-digested chromosomal fragment from Lactobacillus acidophilus ADH inserted into an Escherichia coli vector, pBluescript II SK+. Southern hybridization studies demonstrated homology of the inserted fragment with one other L. acidophilus strain and one Bifidobacterium strain. Identification of a SauI site located near the middle of the 1.9-kb ADH chromosomal fragment made it possible to clone the Lactobacillus bulgaricusβ-galactosidase (EC 3.2.1.23) gene into this vector. The vector was unable to replicate in the homologous host, L. acidophilus ADH, following electroporation. The chromosomal fragment allowed the integration of the βgalactosidase gene (βgal) into the host chromosome via homologous recombination. The size of the two flanking L. acidophilus ADH chromosomal fragments, approximately 0.95 kb each, was sufficient to allow the double cross-over to take place. Southern hybridization demonstrated that only L. acidophilus and L. bulgaricus DNA had been integrated into the chromosome of the host strain. The β-galactosidase activity of the transformant was increased approximately 200-fold when compared to the enzyme activity of the wild-type strain. The βgal gene remained stable in the transformant strain after 30 transfers in growth media without selection pressure. This first-generation integrative cloning vector is constructed solely of DNA from organisms consumed by humans and could be considered a food-grade vector system.

Notes: Abstract The structure of a cationic worm-like cylindrical micelle was investigated by SANS (small-angle neutron scattering). Intensities from 0.1% by weight solutions in D2O, at rest and under shear, were measured on the NIST Cold Neutron Research facility 30-m spectrometer in the wave vector range 0.03⩽Q (nm1)⩽-2.0. Scattered intensity patterns from the solutions subjected to shears equal to or greater than 40s1 showed pronounced anisotropy, but such anisotropy could not be detected below this apparent threshold shear. The threshold was characterized by a relaxation time since anisotropy was detected only after several minutes of shearing. In contrast, the anisotropy was apparent immediately the shear was applied at the higher shears. The data were analyzed based on the assumption that the micelles behave as rigid rods. Estimates of the radii and length under shear are given. Polydispersity in rod length is discussed, and we argue that it contributes significantly to the scattering patterns.
