    Description: We searched the published literature for data on the density-dependence of seaweed growth under different nutrient levels. The search was based on the Web of Science®, accessed in May 2019, using a combination of keywords including "seaweed & remediation", "seaweed & bioremediation", "seaweed & nitrogen removal" and "seaweed & phosphorous removal". These searches yielded a total of 164 papers reporting growth rates and biomass density for seaweed. We retrieved the growth rates, biomass density, concentration of the dominant forms of inorganic nutrients - ammonia, nitrate and phosphate - and incident irradiance, and recorded the taxa (chlorophyta, phaeophyta or rhodophyta). This generated a raw dataset containing a total of 1729 experimental assessments. For all the assessments, we further converted all growth rates to units of % day-1 and biomass density (i.e. the seaweed biomass per unit habitat volume) to g FW L-1.

    Notes: The yield and protein contents of water-soluble pentosan preparations ranged from 0.67 to 0.84% and 15.4 to 24.2%, respectively. After soluble-starch was removed, total yield of water-soluble gums was 0.38 to 0.58%, and their protein contents ranged from 16.9 to 22.6%.Pentosans were fractionated on diethyl aminoethyl cellulose columns. Based on carbohydrate contents, fraction II, eluted with 0.0025 M borate was the largest. Fraction I (eluted with water) was generally the smallest and contained no protein. Fraction III (eluted with 0.025 M borate) was the second smallest and was richest in protein. Effects of amylase, protease, and of pentosanases, and of column fractionation on composition of pentosans were followed by infrared spectroscopy.

    Notes: A protease was extracted with 1 M NaCl from spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) photosystem II (PSII) particles and purified through gel filtration and anion-exchange chromatography. SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of the protease revealed a polypeptide with a molecular mass of 43 kDa. The activity of the purified protease was assayed using a 24 kDa water-soluble protein as substrate, visualized through SDS-PAGE. The protease even remained active in the presence of 0.1 and 0.2 M NaCl, although the degradation pattern changed, which indicated that the protease was different from that reported earlier by another group. The presence of 0.3 M NaCl was shown to be inhibitory. The protease was inhibited by 1,10-phenanthroline and EGTA-NaOH (pH 7.0), indicating that the metal ions are essential for activity and that the enzyme is a metal-protease. FTIR spectroscopy was used to examine the conformationally sensitive amide I' bands of the protease. The protease was observed to undergo spectroscopic changes that reflect the conformational changes that take place when Ca2+ is bound, which further confirms that the protease is a metal-protease.

    Notes: Abstract Multi-agent robotic systems are useful in many practical applications. For some tasks, such as holding a conference, cooperation among agents are necessary. For other tasks, such as cleaning a room, multiple agents can work in parallel for better performance. This paper provides help-based (HCP) and coordination-based (CCP) protocols for controlling agents to accomplish multi-agent tasks. The HCP utilizes efficient negotiation to coordinate agents into groups. The CCP improves overall performance by exchanging local knowledge among agents and making decisions in parallel. A reactive and modularized agent architecture was employed to implement the protocols. Since each protocol is embedded into the architecture, it is efficient and effective. In addition, the protocols are deadlock-free. The protocols were utilized to solve the Object-Sorting Task, which abstracts two characteristics of tasks: parallelism and cooperation. The experimental results showed that 1) both HCP and CCP are stable under different workload; 2) the protocols can effectively utilize the agent-power to achieve super-linear improvement; 3) The CCP is better than the HCP in both performance and speedup.
